Its not often when a tour gets my highest marks but my trip to Iceland in 2022 with Iceland Geology Tours was outstanding. Our trip leadersTamie Jovanelly and Joe Cook were the best. I went on the first of two Association of Women Geologist (AWG) trips during the summer of 2022. Most of us were geologist by training but there were a few who weren't and the trip was enjoyed by all. It helps that Tamie " Dr. Jovanelly" wrote the book (literally) " Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics and Glacial Features" and that she has been going to Iceland for over a decade.

The tour is designed for the active participant and we climbed an outlet glacier, boated amongst icebergs in a glacial lagoon and scaled numerous cinder cones. Tamie and Joe always made me feel successful even though I am a boomer well into retirement. They were able to meld our group who ranged from 20 somethings with those close to their 80s. I liked that the tour guides knew which stops were interesting and what time was best to get there to hike, take pictures and avoid crowds (sometimes impossible in this small country).

Highlights for me were walking on a fresh lava flow which was still off gassing, visiting a geothermal plant and hiking on a glacier (this part I could have done all day). I love the fact that we circumnavigated Iceland and had a diverse experience of accommodations from guest houses to farm stays. We even had the opportunity to milk cows, ride horses and whale watch (non very geologic). The schedule is packed but it also had free days where we could relax and sightsee at our own pace.

Tamie and Joe were the best and so attentive to everybody's needs. Their attention to details was awesome and they made the travel seem effortless. Prior to the trip we had several zoom meetings that prepared us for travel and allowed us to meet the other participants, which I found helpful. I would definitely recommend traveling with Iceland Geology Tours or any other tours that Tamie and Joe plan.

On the negative side, I would say that the weather in Iceland is unpredictable and often wet and gray, but after all it is the arctic. Rain pants, rain jacket, gloves and hiking boots are a must have on this trip at anytime of the year. Leave the umbrellas at home no one uses them in Iceland.

Five stars! I would do it again!

Yes, it was a great trip.....ditto on what friends Ethan and Laurie had to say, so please read their reviews. My one addition is that this is not a confining "group tour". There was plenty of freedom to add individuality to one's day.....in adventuring, eating and finding alone time. I'm already awaiting the sign up for my next tour with Tamie and Joey.

I had the honor to work with Tamie and Joey as they were finalizing the details of their tours in Iceland. They have an amazing talent for creating a geology tour that non-geologists can also fully enjoy. They managed to find the perfect balance between activities and free-time. Attention to detail, great sightseeing spots and they are a joy to work with. All in all, they manage to be great tour guides as well as tour operators.

It was a MOST excellent trip, with wonderful people, great leadership, and all that good stuff. We learned a lot and got to see a most wonderful land of fire and ice. I cannot say enough good things about it, but I am not going to mention specific sites because I cannot spell (or pronounce) the words.

It was a great trip, and thank you Juan for loaning me that electrical-converting device.

I'll start by saying that I am not a geologist, yet this was still one of the top trips of my life, unforgettable! Dr. Tamie Jovanelly and her husband Joey are a wonderful team and coordinated an excellent group trip. We went to all the cool spots you see advertised, and much more! We learned a lot about geology in fun and easy-to-understand ways... geology facts that will blow your mind!

Iceland is such a unique place with lots to see but this tour makes me feel like I didn't miss anything. They were great at organizing and making sure we were well-prepared and knew what to expect. The food was delicious, accommodations were great, and the activities were well-spaced. The group felt like each day topped the last in unbelievable ways. We had some action-packed days followed by restful days.

We saw a recent lava flow, hiked on a glacier, went on a boat in a glacial lagoon, saw icebergs on a black sand beach, hiked to multiple huge breathtaking waterfalls, explored rocky and sandy beaches, toured a geothermal power plant, talked to a local ranger, went inside a lava tube, hiked to the top of volcano craters, saw smelly fumaroles and mud pots, watched geysers blow, and so much more.

They made travel stress-free by handling all the logistics as well as covering lots of details, including music that matched our itinerary for the day. They are super fun to travel with as well as kind and interesting people. I cannot rave about them enough and would join them on another trip in a heartbeat!

The entire trip was great - I learned a tremendous amount about glaciers and volcanoes, and each activity was well organized and managed. Walking on a glacier and exploring a lava tube we're just two of the highlights.

First things first... WOW. I've done a lot of travel and have been on a lot of tours... And nothing compared to the passion, coordination, expertise, and care that was shown by Tamie and Joey on my trip to Iceland. Everything was planned out in a way that optimized each and every stop, highlighting the geology and beauty of the entire island. At the end of each day, I felt so satisfied but not overloaded like I have on other fast paced tours. It so shows that Tamie has been to Iceland over a dozen times as she can answer all your questions, has found the best van (the same that drives visiting heads of state!) and driver, best stops and views along the way. If you fancy yourself a geology lover, or just geo-curious like myself, and want to see some of the most stunning sights in the word, I couldn't recommend this trip more. Putting the Costa Rica and Artic Circle trips on my budget list for future years!

TLDR: Absolute BEST way to see Iceland---especially for geologists!

As a geologist, I couldn't help but have very high hopes for this trip, and my hopes were met and far exceeded! I stood in a graben between the Eurasian and North America plates, I walked on a glacier, I went on a boat ride in a glacial lagoon surrounded by icebergs, I saw icebergs floating to sea, I saw stunning black sand beachs with the stark white ocean waves lapping on them, I walked on a 1-year-old lava flow, I explored lava tubes, and I was blown away by all the columnar basalt. Dr. Tamie Jovanelly provided relevant, in depth geologic background that appealed to a wide audience, and I could tell each stop was thoughtfully planned. She responded patiently to all my geologic questions, and was adept at answering geologic questions from intro to expert level. Did I mention she literally wrote the book about the geology of Iceland???!!! What more could I ask for in a field trip leader?! There are also a ton of stops that appeal to non-geologists, particularly the waterfall stops. ;)

The pacing of the stops was perfect, meaning we saw so much but we were not exhausted by it all. The hotels were well placed along our route, clean, and comfortable---some have natural mineral water pools. I highly recommend Icelandic swimming pools, but shower first. ;) Our guides (Tamie and Joe) kept us entertained and laughing, which is partly because their positive chemistry is infectious.

The food stops and food provided were also very well thought out. We had both pre-selected dinner nights (beer and wine at cost), free choice nights with recommended options, and the best snack bags ever! Thank goodness for all the hiking, haha. Joe kept us all healthy, safe, and in a good mood. He is an irreplaceable part of this trip, and I consider myself lucky to have met him. Plainly put, these two leaders love what they do, and that was the biggest advantage of all.

I will definitely be going on another one of their tours in the future, because they are really branching out! Note their tour company used to be called Iceland Geology Tours, so check out those reviews also. Skal!

The Iceland trip is AMAZING! This trip definitely lives up to it's name, everything we did was an adventure! My jaw never left the floor! Every day was my favorite day. It is absolutely the trip of a lifetime. Dr. Jovanelly and her husband Joe are the perfect tour guides, very knowledgeable, detail oriented, and caring. Our Bus driver, Gróa, has tons of stories and inside scoops, making the trip very authentic. I recommend this to EVERY ONE

My experience on this Iceland tour was influential in determining what I wish to do with my life and career. The natural beauty on display was breathtaking, and the information on Glaciers and Volcanos is some of the best you will get period. I would highly recommend taking this tour if you have a passing interest in geology, or wish to find yourself lost in the beauty of the natural world.
