About
The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis are a spectacular natural phenomenon, often seen dancing around in fantastic colours across the Icelandic Arctic sky. The Northern lights are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. That creates this wonderful light effect, known as the Aurora Borealis. The locations visited are different every tour since we go where it’s most likely to see the Northern Lights each day. This tour is dependant on weather and sightings are not guaranteed. Refreshments not included.

We set out to see the northern lights with Reykjavik excursions. We drove an hour and half with many other buses to a "carpark" in the middle of nowhere. We didn't even spend an hour there before we were told to get back on the bus to go home. We did see the lights a little bit but wasn't impressed with the amount of light pollution from the buses and surroundings in the spot they had taken us too. We were lucky enough to see them on our own in Reykjavik the day before by the sun voyager and to be honest this was a better experience. Save your money and find yourself a quiet, less light polluted area out of the city centre. Also our tour guide was very abrubt and I did not hear her say please or thank you once. We were sat at the front of the bus and she kept passing comments to the driver about the road conditions and how "brave he was". This was very unnerving to hear and needs to be more aware of who is in ear shot.

Searching for the Northern Lights is a hit or miss activity. During our 4 nights stay in Iceland, there is only 1 night which have a good weather in the evening.
There are like 5 buses that went that night in Thingvillier National park. We were there at 10:00 pm. Two buses left at around 11:30 pm. Around past 12 pm lo and behold we saw a flicker or a strip of the northern lights. It goes only for 3-5 minutes.
Good thing our tour guide Maria is very persistent and ask us wait a little more that the aurora will be showing that night.
When you go to this tour make sure that you are well prepared for the cold. Hand or foot warmer is a great help because the first thing to get cold are our fingers and toes. Wearing crampons will greatly help you if is slippery and be aware that the place is pitch black. They don't allow flash light or camera flash.
We are still lucky that we saw the northern lights even if it just a strip and not the dancing northern lights that are mostly advertise.
I understand that some of the reviewers were frustrated for not seeing it but the northern lights is very unpredictable just like the weather in Iceland. Iceland is a beautiful country, even if you did not see the northern lights.

I hadnt planned to book a trip out but was offered a discount through Get your guide and with the added offer of a free trip the next night if you dont see the lights I decided to go. The departure point was 10 minutes walk from my hotel meaning getting the coach was easy. On the first night we went to a sight near the airport where we stayed for 1 1/2 hours but had no joy. Because of third party bookings i couldnt book online for the next night but as the BSI station was near I went in person to sort out my booking with no problems. On the next night we went to Thingvellir National Park with an excellent lady guide.Almost immediately on arrival Aurora showed herself. It wasnt the most dramatic display, green light for a few minutes but I saw her. Unfortunately I didnt manage to get any photos. I should have been more prepared with the right camera settings before. (Im ready for next time!) For the price I paid and two trips I would say it is value for money. The coaches are comfortable and have wi-fi and usb sockets for charging

The first three hours of this tour would have merited 2 stars. We boarded at the Bus Station and a full 50 seater coach set off for a remote location. We were the first to arrive followed by a further 10 coaches (all full). So over 500 people all standing around waiting for the Northern Lights. We knew the forecast was good and the atmospherics better but it was not until we were on our way back to Reykjavik that we saw the full splendour of the night. For this our bus had to thank Joanna who was an amazing guide. We pulled over to see the lights and saw other later tour buses heading back.
Her excitement at seeing the dancing sky was palpable and everyone was in awe of the sights. We got back to Reykjavik at about 1pm all still amazed by what we saw.
So for us an amazing tour - thank you Joanna.
However - be careful. There were people on our tour who had seen nothing the night before and there are no guarantees - especially with nature. And with 10 other coaches all arriving with their lights blazing the time the nights sky was in complete darkness was limited. There is a good Icelandic website that sets out the likelihood of seeing the aurora before you book. There is also a northern lights app that will make your pictures stunning and is better to see than with the naked eye!
If you do see the Northern Lights it is an experience never to be missed.

Having read a lot of mixed reviews about this tour we were bit unsure if we had made the right choice.....
We made our way to the bus terminal which luckily wasn’t too much of a walk.
The staff are efficient and got everyone on the bus to set off at 8pm (the tour start time). I would get there 15-20minutes before as you have to go to the desk to show them your booking and get a ticket.
We were told that the chances of seeing the northern lights is very dependant on the weather and obviously the company cannot control that so I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews regarding this.
The tour is a large bus of approx 60people but it’s clean, comfortable and has WiFi on board.
The guide and driver were great and had lots of tips on how to best take photos of the lights. They recommended an app which we downloaded using the WiFi.
The drive was just over an hour and was to a car park just off the main road (ok maybe not what we had pictured but let’s be honest you can’t go to the wilderness in a bus!)
We stood outside for about an hour and did see the faint lights....it was freezing so definitely wrap up warm and the van with hot chocolate definitely appreciated (450kr a cup). The only downside was that other buses arrived and people were really irritating with torches and flashes (despite being told not to do this by the guides numerous times- again not the companies fault)
You are able to stay on the bus if the cold is too much. There was a toilet on board the bus although I didn’t use.
At our allocated time we left and drive back and were amazed to see fantastic displays at the side of the road. The driver found a safe place for us to stop and get off the bus on 3 occasions. This was very much appreciated as they could have just kept going.
We arrived back in Reykjavík at approx 1230pm and were really glad the bus did a few drop offs so we could get off closer to our apartment.
I would definitely recommend this tour but do keep in mind that the northern lights are a natural thing and that it’s not guaranteed

I must start by saying we were lucky with the day.
This review is more about the whole experience, we like many other reviews drove to a car park where there was several buses, it was not great but that was the start of the experience.
We stayed for 1:30 hours and then the tour guide stated they would keep looking on our journey back. We managed to stop three times on the way back and the driver/guide worked very well together to find safe places to park.
The whole experience was very impressive in the fact of how the driver/guide tried to cater for everyone and keep us all happy, we were asked if at past midnight if we wanted to stop for the third time and it felt like they cared about us all having the best experience.
My last bit of advice would be to book this at the start of your visit so that if you don’t see the lights then you would have opportunities the days following

We were in Iceland at the beginning of February and booked this tour for every night we were there. The tour was cancelled for the first 3 nights and we were able to rebook for the next. We were informed early in the day of this and it really isn’t the tour companies fault. So much must go on behind the scenes and they know the chances of being able to see them or not. Yes you may not but it was definitely worth the money and time to take the risk if you’re just realistic with yourself that you may not see them.
Luckily on our last night the trip was on and we got to see the lights! What a memorable experience!
Yes you get very cold, it’s a late night trip and you may not see them but for us that was all completely worth it. Top tips - Wrap up very warm and bring a decent camera. We didn’t but still got some memorable snaps! They will also drop you at your hotel door on returning to Reykjavik.
We first went to the initial location, near the airport and saw some activity, the tour even stayed later than planned as they will do that if they think the activity is about to happen. The best moment was that on our way back, our guide was informed of a show going on above our heads so we quickly pulled into a lay-by and all piled off the bus. This was so exciting and we were lucky and got to see a beautiful show that we will never forget!

Comfortable coach with toilet and very informed guide. Unfortunately we didn't see anything at the viewing point but as we drove back into the city the guide suddenly announced there were lights in the sky at the harbour so we zoomed own there and were rewarded with a fantastic display over the water. This did mean the tour finished 1.5 hours later than expected but I am definitely not complaining and it was great that the tour staff were happy to be so flexible and did their best to make sure we saw them.

The group are very professional and genuinely want you to see the lights. Staff were friendly and know so much about the lights and help to get your cameras ready in case they do come out!!
We did not see the lights on our first tour, so we got a second one for free and we were so lucky to see the most magnificent display. The driver gave us extra time to take pictures and just enjoy the display.
Please be advised it is absolutely freezing!! So layer up and be prepared to wait. There is also a man that sells hot drinks and waffles for about £3 for a hot chocolate.
Reasonable I think
There were other coaches where we were, a lot of people but when the lights come out you won’t miss the view, it was defo worth it and I think a very reasonable price.
Emma was our favourite tour guide. She has great energy!!

Be warned if you book a premium package for Northern Lights with Reykjavik Excursions and do not see the lights first time they will not honour your original package when you rebook for the following nights.
We tried 3 times to see the Northern Lights without success, having booked a premium 'Small Group' tour. The first night was cancelled due to poor weather. The second night we went out in our small minibus to a very private & secluded spot. Forecast & conditions were perfect but we were unlucky.
On our third attempt we found out (and only when we were picked up) that we had not been booked on another 'small group' tour but had been bundled in with the 300+ others all going out in the coaches. Apparently it is in the terms & conditions that if they take you out but you are unable to see the Lights, they will only rebook you for free on the bigger coaches, regardless of what you originally purchased.
Whilst we waited at the BSI bus terminal to fill the remaining seats on the bus I did try and speak to someone at the customer service desk. This person was very rude and simply threw 5 vouchers at me (for me & my family) and told me to join the back of the big line for boarding.
The experience on the coaches was very different. With the bigger groups you are limited to locations where they can park & manoeuvre 5 large coaches. We tried two locations (both service stations off a main road) but the cloud was so thick that we could barely make out the full moon. After about 45 minutes at our second location the guides conceded that the small break in the clouds (now closed again) was in the wrong place and the live meteorological data confirmed that there was no activity anyway.
We fly home tomorrow and, in theory, have 1 year to rebook again.
I am not upset that we didn't see the lights; on both occasions we went out there was no activity. However I am upset that if you book a premium experience this is only valid for the first attempt, especially now that I know it often takes 3-4 attempts. Had I know this I would probably have opted for the coaches from the outset and saved the money. This was not made clear and the poor customer service has left me feeling quite bitter.

Silly question, but what exactly do you do in these excursions? Do you just stand around for 3 hours and look at the sky?
Written February 3, 2023
As previously said, yes. If you are lucky you will get an engaging guide who helps you understand what you are looking at and how to adjust your phone/camera so you can take photos. We had a very diverse group so got to chat with people from other countries, other walks of life and other experiences. If that is not up your alley, then don't do it.

Is it possible to drive yourself to see the northern lights ? Where would i get more information or directions for this ? Thanks !!
Written May 6, 2019
Yes, you can -- basically, just drive out of town and try to find a spot with a clear sky and little artificial light, and in a cold night you have a good chance to see them. Not in summer (May to August), though, when it does not get dark enough. We used an app (there are several) for a preview of sun activity for the coming hours and days. The more activity, the more northern lights, statistically speaking.

Hi,
We booked via secret escapes and the booking of flight and accomodation came with a nothern lights tour. I would recommend booking with an airline like icelandic air or expedia where you can add it in or comes it included as apart of the deal.
The Center Hotels are able to book tours for you.

The Northern Lights season in Iceland is from September to mid-April. Some sources will recommend November to February as the prime time for viewing the Aurora, as they are the darkest months with the longest possible window to see the lights. However, these months also have the worst weather with lots of rain, snow and clouds. It is also not unheard of to see the lights as early as mid-August. You might want to read our article about the best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland.
Northern Lights trips are organized around the country all winter long. There are for example numerous tour operators offering these late-night sightseeing excursions from Reykjavík, of which we recommend the Northern Lights Mystery Tour and Northern Lights Super Jeep Hunt. The ideal location for sightings varies and the local guides are skilled in ‘hunting’ the lights, finding locations where conditions are best for seeing them each night.
In most cases, chances of catching the Northern Lights are immediately improved outside populated areas, away from city lights. That being said, the Aurora can often be seen dancing over the capital and other towns. Most hotels around the country offer a special Northern Lights wake-up service, so if lights happen to appear, they will let you know. A longer stay in one location will also improve your chances of spotting this magical natural phenomenon.
How to photograph the Northern Lights
A far as equipment goes, the most important thing you can bring is a tripod and a cable release to avoid the dreaded shaken photo syndrome. If you don’t have a cable release, set your camera’s self-timer to two or ten seconds shutter delay. There is no single setting for your camera that ensures great captures. As a rule of thumb, ISO setting between 800 and 3200, aperture between f/2.8 and f/5.6, and shutter speed at between 15 seconds and 30 seconds have proven effective.
What to bring on your Northern Lights tour
Warm clothes
Camera
Tripod
Spare batteries
Good shoes
Memory cards
Snacks
Drinks

Hello! I was wondering if there's a toilet on the bus or if there are toilets when you arrive at the place where you try and catch the lights? I'm pregnant so just wondered!
Written October 31, 2018
Hi, better email the company direct. Different size buses might have different facilities on board.
Written November 17, 2018
Is there any pick up service from Keflavik ???
Written September 20, 2018
You would need to check with the company directly. You would probably have to get transportation from the airport to the main bus depot and possibly could transfer there to catch the specific van for the tour. Have fun!
Written October 3, 2018
how long does the northern lights tour take? what time is pick? thinking of going in april...
Written August 30, 2018
Hi, it’s a night tour and they start grabbing people around 8-9pm depends on the capacity of people booked. Because the ride takes about 45mins bus ride then all depends on the season of the lights how long you will stay out on tour before returning back to where you was picked up. Expect to be out on tour 4hrs minimum, enjoy!
