We saw plenty of awesome sights during our Iceland trip, but we agreed Þórsmörk was the highlight of our entire trip... We stayed 2 nights at Volcano Huts and visited as casual day hikers... The scenery is absolutely stunning....and there are a few day hikes to keep you busy for several days... And what also makes Þórsmörk appealing is it's generally not accessible to the casual tourist---either you hike, bike, horse ride there, or you take a super bus or super Jeep as the access roads ford several healthy rivers....

So, if you have just a few days to visit Iceland, and you wanna get off the beaten path (read: The Golden Circle), definitely consider Þórsmörk!!

A beautiful and highly recommendable track surrounded by glaciers in an unspotted area of southern Iceland.
Take the 249 road off the ring road at Seljalandsfoss and drive 25 km in an ample valley between the Ejyafjalla and Tyndafjalla glaciers. Impressive views on both sides and stunning contrasts between green meadows, black basaltic rocks and white and blue ice.
The track REQUIRES a 4WD vehicle. Not difficult in se, it crosses several rivers which need to be waded. In case of doubt I have waited for other cars to come to choose the best solution to cross. Well into the valley there are several trails for reasonably easy walks

The road to Þórsmörk is an adventure of its own and the difficulty of access makes it less crowded and much more rewarding than the average tourist site.
Whatever your transport choice I encourage you to spend the night and enjoy at least two full days of hiking. Volcano Huts are a great place to stay, situated at a crossroads of trails.

Vast vistas, glacial rivers running in warm Summer, great hiking back up to a waterfall, fun breaching the river flows in “big wheel” vehicles. This gives you a real perspective on the power and beauty of volcanic action and it’s aftermath.

Thórsmörk, or Thor's Valley, is located in the beautiful Húsadalur Valley of a nature reserve. It is at the end of the Laugavegur Trail and is a great way to end the trek. This river valley is very wide and there are great views of mountains and glaciers. You can take a bus out here and there are huts and campgrounds if you'd like to stay overnight.

Took the “Thorsmork Valley” tour with Activity Iceland and had a great experience!
An amazing trip on a super-jeep, crossing glacial rivers, visiting stunningly beautiful canyons. The views are simply breathtaking.
The most beautiful point (for me) was Nathusagil secret ravine and waterfall, very difficult to reach, with challenging rivers crossings (you have to use rope/chains aids that are put on the rocks): adrenaline and incredibly rewarding when you see the waterfall!
We had a small group (5 people in total) and a great guide, Ingvar. :-)
Don’t miss the tour!

We took the monster bus from Hvolsvollur to stay in a great little cabin at Volcano Huts. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed three trails to stunning vistas of volcanic landscape, wildflowers, glacial cap and glacier tongues, mountains, and canyons.

Take the time and create lifelong memories.

The most beautiful place I visited in Iceland
You need to have a real 4x4 to get there or take a scheduled bus. There are also super jeep trips available. I recommend taking an individual trip and spend some time hiking or stop where ever you like to enjoy the beautifull nature. There are camping places on a few spots.

I'm not sure why Thorsmork is mentioned as an activity in Reykjavik on tripadvisorvas it is a 2 hour drive away, but it's definitely worth a visit.

There are several bus companies that go there from Reykjavik and drop you off so you can hike. Not all reviews about the pick up afterwards were that postive though, so I decided to go for the extra expense and do a superjeep tour with Activity Iceland. I really enjoyed this tour, you got to see more places than you would with the bus. Our guide was informative and very helpfull when we needed to cross streams when hiking in 2 canyons. I would definitely recommend this tour of the beatiful Thorsmork area.
