What a fantastic day out this was. We opted for the smaller group tour which was a minibus, our driver Trond was waiting for us at the pick up point early as he said it was too cold for us to be stood waiting! He proceeded to be a fantastic driver and guide, telling us the most entertaining stories, interesting facts, singing old Icelandic songs and reciting poems. He also knew exactly how to avoid the busiest times and changed the order of the visits around so we were able to access the attractions fully and without being over crowded.
We started with the national park which was absolutely stunning, we had plenty of time to follow a short trail and take some pictures of the beautiful scenery. Next, we went to the glacier and waterfall, the scenery was quite literally breathtaking,to see the frozen waterfall and the beauty and power of nature was spectacular. We stopped off for lunch there and although it was expensive, the cafe did the most amazing chocolate cake I've ever seen, worth the calories for sure.
We then moved on to the geysers, but on the way Trond explained to us about the Icelandic horses and how important they are to Icelandic people. I had really wanted to see them and I was so happy that he made a surprise stop at a small horse petting area where we got to meet a few of the horses who can be petted and fed, as normally this is not something you can do with the wild or owned horses. This really was a highlight for me, and Trond obviously is extremely fond of them himself as he introduced them all to us. The geysers were only a brief stop, to be honest once you've seen the main one blow that's pretty much it, but the scenery was still amazing and the information interesting.
The final stop was the Secret Lagoon, which of course isn't secret but going later in the day meant it thinned out a lot and wasn't too busy by the time we got in. It is much smaller than the Blue Lagoon, we have been there as well and this is not on the same scale, but I actually enjoyed the Secret Lagoon just as much as it is naturally occurring and the history behind it is really interesting. 25 minutes in the water was plenty, it is so hot so do keep hydrated as we did see a lady who had stayed in too long and fainted. We then drove back to Reykjavik with Trond pointing out the black beach and other areas of interest.
We really enjoyed this trip, it wasn't rushed, but packed lots in and we really felt we had seen more of what this beautiful country has to offer. The small group felt much more special than a huge coach trip and our wonderful guide just made the day. It wasn't much dearer than a coach either and in our opinion worth the extra few quid.
Wrap up warm, take a camera, and have a fantastic day.
