We stopped here as a hike from Gjain. It's a settlement museum of sorts with parts of an original viking structure that is preserved. It's off a rough and rocky road so high clearance vehicles are required. A good stop as part of the Haifoss-Gjain visits, but not worth it by itself

One of the oldest-known viking settlements in Iceland, the ruins of this long house are sheltered inside a large protective building to preserve the archaeological finds. You can enter and walk through the buildings, and imagine what it might have looked like with its turf walls and central campfire. I suggest visiting the settlement recreation at Þjóðveldisbærinn for comparison, as it is built in the image of Stöng. There is a guestbook at the entrance, but otherwise the site is empty. Outside, you can find the ruins of the small chapel to the right of the main building, and if you follow the hiking trails, you find Gjain, a valley of many waterfalls, once used as a set for Game of Thrones, and quite beautiful on its own. There are toilets in the parking lot at Stöng, with hot water and an outdoor washing area, which is great for anyone camping or cooking on the road. The view over the neighbouring valley is also particularly beautiful. Note that Stöng is only accessible via F-roads, so you MUST have 4WD to get here.

This is an off the beaten track place that recommended an SUV, but we reached it in sedans. The ruins are not much, but just beyond is an enchanting valley where water courses from different directions to create a valley of small waterfalls. We spent several hours here exploring.

That is putting it lightly. There are so many amazing things to see in Iceland. This is not one of them.

My wife and I stopped at Stong while passing through the area. It was a lot of fun to see parts of the original structure which gives a good sense of what life may have been like a thousand years ago when you look out towards the valley. We toured most of the site (excluding the church, didn’t immediately see it) and would say we took about 45 minutes from the time we parked, climbed the (easily accessible) hill to the site and looked around. Families or those who may walk a bit slower may want 60-90 minutes.

If this is what I think it is, it's the Settlement Exhibition, which is part of Reykjavik City Museum. It houses an open excavation of Viking Age ruins as well as a program of temporary exhibitions on Settlement culture and history. The museum shop has a range of Icelandic design gifts and souvenirs. Fantastic and fascinating!

It's an interesting dig and gives you a good idea of how the Viking settlers lived, the shape and size of their dwellings and how they were organized.
