This was a trip of 3 brothers. We had an amazing time with Jon for the last 7 days. Jon planned our itinerary so well that we could cover most of the beautiful and exotic locations around Iceland. I will remember this trip forever and wish to come back again. I would highly recommend Jon, as he is an incredible person as well as a photo tour guide. The best part of Jon’s planning was his time to get to the locations, as when we reach each destination, there are hardly any people around and it felt like a private moment for us. As a result my photographer brought could take breathtaking pictures. Almost every night Jon took us out for Northern Lights viewing from different iconic locations. Overall I can say these 7 days has been the best 7 days of my life 👍🏻❤️🇮🇸

Iceland has been on my list of places to visit since I (re)started taking my photography seriously. My trip, with Jon as a guide, didn't disappoint. My brother and I only had a few days in Reykjavik, so I asked Jon to take us where he could in the time available. I expect that we ended up on pretty standard tours, but the little extras made it well worth the cost. Jon was great in helping to point out great locations and the couple of quick reminders that really helped me get some fantastic shots.

When I get back to Iceland, I'm going to find Jon and book a longer tour!

Jealousy in admiration

Why am I jealous of Jon?
As a photographer, Jon has the best playground to photograph all year long. A very diverse landscape that changes all the time on a beautiful island.
That’s the good part, the secret part of having his many years of expertise to help you in planning your shoot in Iceland, his tool box. You can follow the many other tourists to the same locations on your own or take the journey with Jon to places very few tourist and other photographers dare to venture on this wonderful island.
Jon is more than just another fellow professional photographer. Do you know his claim to fame? Do you know that he has two books out about his photography of his beautiful country? You will get to know Jon along your journey to your destination.
Jon gave me a magical experience in a magical place and I made a new friend for life despite the slow kill of walking up two thousand plus feet but, I must say the view was very worth it.
I highly recommend anyone with any level of photography or not to book a tour with Jon. I know that you will be satisfied.

So now you have a small clue as to why I am jealous of my friend Jon.

Happy travels,

M. Houston

We booked a 5 day photo tour of Iceland (West fjords) with Iceland Photo Tours and had Jón as our guide (we were in his SUV/jeep, very comfortable).
Jón was very personable, easy to talk to (we were speaking English and he’s fluent). He was extremely flexible and accommodating, working in our requests/preferences quite well while adjusting to the shifting weather throughout. We were lucky to have good weather overall, but some cloudy sunsets.

In terms of the itinerary, we saw more varied wildlife on the first two days as expected given the locations. The latter days were focused on landscapes, and Jón is a landscape photographer and was able to provide quite a bit of guidance on shot composition, settings, and perspectives. One particularly valued part of his feedback was his ability to tailor his input to accommodate both an intermediate and a novice photographer who were part of our trip. We spent less time on the post production components of the shooting but did spend time one evening on editing (more valuable input).

We would highly recommend Jón as a guide and are certainly planning to return to Iceland.

General comments about Iceland as we spend a couple of days before and after the photo tour. We went in early August specifically to see puffins (note that they are only present 2-3 months out of the year): the hotel rooms and food are more expensive than expected, breakfasts are substantial (buffet style) and generally included with the room, and any location within a day’s drive of Reykjavik is unfortunately literally overrun with tourists. The tourist offices in Reykjavik were helpful overall. We had no trouble finding English speaking staff.

Can’t say enough good things about our recent trip with Jón. He picked us up from the airport and the tour has started, we were never rushed, we visited a lot of “off the beaten path” places and seen some hall mark attractions. A few times Jón went out of his way to show us places which were not part of our original plan, simply because the weather allowed it. If we just went on our own, we would have never been able to find them. Being a photographer himself, he’s always up for anything, sunsets, sunrises ( I know it was rough to wake up at 4:30am) or chase the northern lights. We had such a great time and would definitely travel with Jón again and also recommend him to our friends.
P.S. not only does he do photo tours but he does regular tours as well.
All pictures are straight out of camera from the beautiful locations we have visited.

We spent 6 days and nights with Jon Hilmarsson as our private photo guide in Iceland. It was the best thing we could have done to see and photograph Iceland’s beautiful landscape. From our initial contact with Jon to the day we parted ways Jon was responsive to our requests. Based on the areas of Iceland we wanted to target he came up with an itinerary for us to consider and added things along the way as we desired. Jon spent hours with us each day and into the night going to various locations, both those iconic and some off the beaten path. One day we were on the move for 24 hours photographing sunrise, several locations throughout the day, sunset at glacier lagoon, capturing the aurora borealis at 2 am and then to glacier beach for sunrise. It was spectacular. Jon knew we were up for the many hours photographing and he was very accommodating; he ensured we got the most out of each day and night and still managed to fit in good places for us to enjoy our meals. Jon is also very knowledgeable, not only about Iceland’s landscape but its history, and we learned a lot from him. His background information to the locations we visited and of Iceland itself were very interesting and added to our exceptional Iceland experience. Jon is a very personable man who we are happy to have met and got to know. We truly enjoyed his company as well as his photographic expertise. Highly recommend Jon for your photo tour of Iceland. Note: The few photos added to this review barely scrape the surface of the places we visited.

We are so excited to share our experience with Jon, a truly special photo guide. Our photo tour with Jon was stellar in every way. He knew how to capture the best conditions for our photos, and to flexibly and creatively respond to our every need. When faced with a day of blistering rain, he rearranged the schedule to accommodate us.

During our time with Jon we got to see everything we wanted, plus what he knew would provide thrilling experiences. This included sensing what would deliver truly unique compositions as budding photographers, displaying tremendous patience with us given our varying capabilities, and not hesitating to act spontaneously when new and delightful opportunities presented themselves. Some examples: dropping into a field of lupines with incredible birds overhead, seeing the black pebble beach Reynesfjara with a basalt sea cave late in the day when the light and people-watching were so exciting [amazing!], driving us to Gjain when we casually mentioned it, crossing a river in his jeep, and doing all this with a kindness, a wonderful sense of humor, and a pride for his country that was truly heartfelt.

We are already missing our memorable time together, and hope that in the future, we can see other parts of Iceland with Jon as our guide. In short, this was a fantastic and heart-warming experience we will not soon forget.

I expected it to be good but it exceeded my expectations. Truly professional the whole trip was very organized. I do not think it matters if you are professional or not photographer. The approach to each is individual. Very memorable!!! Highly recommend!

I loved it BIG TIME
