Awesome experience at Fosshestar. We had ridden horses previously, including a few times in Iceland, but never had the complete experience that we did with this tour (which included brushing the horses, helping to saddle them and after the ride, feeding them some treats and spending a little time with them). The horses were beautiful and friendly.
Our tour guide Anna was terrific and was great in guiding us through the entire experience. During the ride, she led us through a number of times where the horses were allowed to trot/tolt which we really liked. She also took pictures and a video of our ride which were emailed to us afterwards.
Great tour for those stopping in Isafjordur as a port on a cruise (they will pick you up near the tender pier and drive you to the farm)
Truly an exceptional experience and would highly recommend.

We went on a tour on a beautiful riding trail with Anna the tour guide, she was lovely and made sure we felt safe and were having fun the whole time.
The horses are so wonderful! They are well trained and taken very good care of.
After the trip we got photos and a video from the trip which made the experience even more memorable.
I highly recommend going on a trip with Fosshestar and getting a unique experience

I spent a lot of time planning our trip and looking for a horseback riding tour. I picked Fosshestar as our location for riding because they offered a unique experience. Instead of just hopping on a horse you don’t know, you first get time to meet and interact with your horse. You get to brush, saddle and bridal your horse and are taught all about Icelandic horses and how they are cared for.
Our guide Anna was an absolute pleasure to meet and we enjoyed spending a portion of our trip with her! Most important - Anna made us feel safe on horseback and our tour was completely catered to our abilities and desires. We were able to trot our horses as we rode outside and enjoyed the spectacular scenery. After, you’re provided with video footage and photos of you ride!
We were so happy with this experience and it was a highlight of our trip!
I must make a shoutout to our horses Sleipnir and Blossi who stole the show with their beauty and sweet nature.

I can't say enough great things about Fosshestar and their riding tour - it was the highlight of our trip. Our guide was so informative, kind and helpful. She picked us up in town and drove us a few miles to the stables. The horses - well, they're simply amazing and of course the area we were riding in is stunningly beautiful. We started with meeting the horses and brushing them, then a brief training session (one in our party had limited riding experience). Once comfortable, we set out from the stables and went on the trail. It's an easy trail and we were even able to cross the stream a couple times. a video and plenty of photos were taken by our guide. It was over way too soon - I could have stayed there for hours. If you love horses or are interested in learning more about the Icelandic horses, book this and you won't regret this riding tour.

There was a small issue with a double reservation. It was resolved quickly and with compassion. The entire experience, from meeting and grooming our horses, to the ride through the beautiful country, to tolting, to the ride back to the cruise port, exceeded our (high) expectations.

This was our second horseback ride on our tour of Iceland. We enjoyed the opportunity to brush and tack our horses. The ride was beautiful and so much fun. Our guide Anna was delightful, and knowledgeable. My daughters had not ridden much and she was very attentive to their needs. I have ridden quite a bit in the past but not much in the past years, I was able to go off on my own for a bit which was lovely. The horses are just adorable and so calm yet when you get on they are ready to go! Such a different experience from what we would have at home. Isafjordur is a gorgeous town also!

We had a great morning riding among the waterfalls and beautiful scenery. The tour includes grooming and saddling the horses then riding in a ring to be sure you have a good comfort level with the horses. Their gallop seems/is faster than the western horses I have rode in the US so be prepared for that. Best of all, they seem to really take care of their horses.

Owner Árni was very accommodating and prompt with communication and my guide Anna was very patient and kind, she showed me how to bridle, saddle and tack my horse and once she assessed my riding competency off we went, galloping across the countryside, crossing rivers, walking along a small beach, and even going to see a small waterfall.
Ignore the one negative review - Fosshester really values the safety and competency of the rider and is a company that genuinely cares about guests' experience. They will go above and beyond to ensure you have a good time, and I had the best time on my private tour. Their horses are also happy and well-trained and very comfortable with human interaction.
It is difficult to run a horse tour business in Isafjordur because of limited lowland areas and even harder when there is a limit to how many horses they can keep and feed. I am so grateful to have gone on a tour with Fosshestar and would not hesitate to do another one. Support this local business - they deserve it!!!!

It was the highlight of our Iceland trip, we rode for the first time and the two good-humored Icelandic horses were very understanding and patient with us, as was the guide. Very nice and competent introduction, we felt safe and enjoyed the ride very much. The subsequent cuddling with the horses has rounded off the event. The horses are led with much feeling and species-appropriate, you notice, these are lovers and not on commerce.

We booked a private horse riding experience while in port on a cruise. We had a great time. Annie was very sweet, patient and helpful. The horses are very easy to ride without being boring. I highly recommend going horse riding, even if you have zero experience. The horses are super cute and you get to pet them in the end.

Hi, what would you like to know about this attraction? We are arriving via cruise line. Not sure how we meet up with this tour? Where will they pick us up?
Written April 1, 2017
We pick our guests up at the tourist information centre. About a 5 minute walk from the ship.
Written October 12, 2018
what is the latest time we can start on the tour during Aug? We may arrive in Isafjordur around 5-6pm. Can we still have a tour since it will be light out?
Written August 6, 2016
Our horses are off duty at that time. We try to keep their rutines as regular as possible and only do tours at 10:00 or/and at 14:00

how much it costs and howlong is the tour
Written July 14, 2016
Tour length: Approximately 2,5 hours (actual riding time approximately 1-1,5 hours depending on the size of your group since larger groups need more time to get the horses ready).
Limits: Maximum weight 115kg (255 pounds)…………….. Minimum age 13.
Description: This is your private and personal tour. You will not be in a group with anyone else and we will give you all of our time and personal service.
Beginners prepare for a very informative hour since this tour is designed as a lesson. The first half of the tour will be where you will learn all the basics of Icelandic horsemanship (inside our arena in the wintertime). Then we will head out for a wonderful Valley Ride. In the valley ride you will be introduced to the beauty of Engidalur. We will go at the pace you are comfortable with and take all precautions possible to make sure that you feel secure. The tour guide will have a Gopro camera mounted on his/her helmet so your tour will be documented for your pleasure.
Advanced riders will get tips they need to enjoy the special traits and gaits of the Icelandic horse. We pick more advanced horses for more experienced riders and go at a faster pace. Since we go at a faster pace we will also cover more ground. The tour guide will have a gopro camera mounted on his/her helmet so your tour will be documented for your pleasure. Keep in mind that riders that have experience in a different breed than ours may still have things to learn about riding Icelandic horses. No two breeds are exactly the same and no two horses are exactly the same.
Mixed groups; if your group has both beginners and advanced riders you can still enjoy the experience together. The tour guide will of course stay with the beginners and give them all the help and support they need, but we let the advanced riders have more advanced horses and give them more freedom to leave the group. Advanced riders can ride at a faster pace in the opposite direction from where the beginner group is heading and return to the group.
Tours start at 10:00 or 14:00 (limited supply, bookings must be made in advance)
