Dynjandi Waterfall Bus Tour from Isafjordur

This journey will take us from Isafjordur through an underground tunnel to Onundarfjordur and to the beautiful village Þingeyri. Then we‘ll make our way up the steep and narrow Hrafnseyrarheidi Heath road to Arnarfjordur where the thunderous waterfall Dynjandi awaits us. We will stop there for aprox one hour so you can hike up to the base of this majestic waterfall. The waterfall is clearly visible from the parking lot so you don’t need to hike if you don’t want to. On our way back we will stop at Hrafnseyri cafe where you can buy coffee and cakes if you are interested and then drive by the farm Audkula, where there is a large colony of Eider Ducks during the breeding season. Who knows, maybe we will see King Eider in the nesting area. It’s very common to see Humpback whales on the fjord during the summer months.

This review is for my trip to Iceland in February 2020 when I traveled with Gummi for about 3 days total. I spent so many hours researching guides before my trip I'll give the quick basics for those who are manically scrolling reviews like I once did. I was a solo female traveler and was tasked with getting to the small town of Bildulalur, located in the west fjords, by a specific day and time. Because this was the dead of winter, many roads were closed and almost every tour company refused to take me. One offered to do it for the price of 10,000 USD. I laughed. And then cried. I didn't think I'd be able to fulfill this weird promise I had made to get to this town. However, in hindsight, this was a blessing because it's what led me to find Gummi. With the main task being to get to Bildudalur, I had a lot of questions for Gummi up top and a lot of "suggestions" for the best way to travel. From thoughts on hotels to thoughts on sight-seeing (I had no idea just how freaking cold and shut down a lot of places were at this time). He was so patient with me over email and kindly explained what was realistically available. He also gently laid out that the best option was for me to fly to Isafjordur and we'd then spend the night at his cabin half way through the trip. It makes me laugh now at how nervous I was by this idea. It's what comes with traveling solo as a woman, I guess. But the moment I met Gummi at the airport all nerves went away. He is gentle and hilarious and has a calm assuring nature that perpetually makes you feel taken care of. Gummi had packed lots of food for us and as we made our way to Bildudalur, he gave a tour of the west fjords that only a native to that area could provide. Radio would go in and out and there was spotty service for my cell phone but it didn't matter one bit because I don't think we ever stopped talking the entire trip. Anytime I wanted a photo we'd stop. And sometimes he'd sense I felt bad asking to pull over and would just do it on his own, knowing it was worth it. He took us to a couple quiet remote hot springs that make you feel instantly connected to the land. He also helped me make a list of to-do's on my trip and did his best to make them happen. From booking me a tour of a glacier to convincing a shop owner to open their doors early so I could buy a wool sweater. His cabin is well constructed and has the perfect homey feel. Gummi cooked us dinner and I'm pretty sure I had no fewer than 67 pieces of fish and about 200 potatoes. There was always plenty of food and no judgment for this hungry gal! We watched the foxes outside eat some of fish scraps before bed and I got to fall asleep to the snowy winds whistling outside the window. The drive wasn't always the smoothest and I now know why so many tours rejected the idea of taking those icy roads on but I can say I've never felt safer. Gummi's vehicle is made for off road driving and I could always tell he had our safety as the number one priority. I got to Bildudalur on exactly my birthday (which was the day and time I needed to be there) and we even managed to put on proper birthday hats and celebrate on top of a freezing mountain on the way. Such a special kick off to my 35th year. Gummi and I planned to part ways for a few days but later that night when I was unpacking my things in Bildudalur I got a call on my phone to look outside to see Northern Lights. I sadly missed them but was touched by Gummi's desire to make my trip as magical as possible. He really goes out of his way for every client. Later in the week we met up in Reykjavik and we went to a waterfall and glacier "nearish" the city. We tried hunting for the northern lights but they did not show their face that night. While we were both disappointed by this, I actually see it was the perfect ending to the trip. It gives me a reason to return to Iceland, a country I'm now so fond of... and all because of this magical trip with Gummi.

My review comes a little late due to working circumstances but the memories of this experience are clear and present in my mind still. This was hands down one of the best tours I have ever had the pleasure of taking a part in. I have travelled a lot as a travel writer, and can say without doubt that the tour I participated in with Gummi was beyond compare. He went above and beyond to ensure that everything my wife Louise and I needed, he provided. This tour felt very personal, with Gummi sharing a wealth of knowledge with regards to the Westfjords of Iceland and I cannot state enough that it was an absolute pleasure for both of us to have taken part in this tour. We saw a fox and took pleasure in viewing the northern lights directly above the warm and cosy cabin each night, it was an absolute blast. Thank you Gummi for the wonderful memories, when we visit Iceland again in the warmer months we will without a doubt be participating in another tour.

As a solo traveller, I had the full attention of Gummi for the duration of my trip. A personally customized excursion into the Northwestern parts to the Snæfellsnes Peninsular. Although main priority on my agenda was a snowmobile trip and the northern lights. Neither of these happened, not for the want of trying, but rather due to inclement weather. However, in hindsight....I did not miss them. Gummi went out of his way to show me so many other things...a 4x4 trip up the glacier, the ice caves, frozen waterfalls. An amazing 4 hours searching for the lights in a hot tub. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about Iceland. A very skilled and competent driver and a thorough gentleman. We searched for the arctic foxes and found footprints. The views were spectacular, the sunrises and sunsets.....there is so much more to Iceland than a fixed itinerary. When you go...be flexible...and enjoy what nature sends your way. Thank you Gummi, this adventure will be in my memory for ever. Thanks for providing the snow gear for me. Thank you for the wonderful conversations that we shared. I feel that I have made a new friend, I have 1 regret...and the one is that my trip was too short by far. I would have loved to spend more time in your company. What may appear to be expensive as a private tour...is the best value for money you could get. I would not consider any other tour operator when I return to Iceland.

A group of 15 of us women hired Gummi to help plan, manage, and drive us around for our 10 days in Iceland. He left us all feeling so safe and cared for, and helped prepare a trip that felt so special, unique, and customized. He had the perfect presence for interacting with a big group of women— a gentle willingness to laugh and share with us, and always respectful of every single one of us. He went above and beyond to cater to the needs in our group and to make sure we went everywhere we wanted to go. His calm presence, flexibility, and deep knowledge were all so very appreciated. We highly recommend his services!

Gudmundur owns this private guiding tour company. We have done many many private tours over the years but this one topped them all. Given the size of Gudmundur's vehicle (Ford Excursion) we were able to go where no other human would dare! He scared us a few times (on purpose!) while driving up and over passes and cliffs then down along the ocean. Stopping on the side of the road and picking blueberries was a highlight of mine. Sheep rule to road in this part of the country. They even occupy the beaches! This was a magical and memorable tour for sure, especially driving in a 3 mile tunnel that went from 2 lanes to 1 and having to play "chicken" with oncoming drivers!
