Awesome experience with a small group on a very powerful offshore RIB, professional crew. We had two kids with us, nicely dressed up in survival suits. The whales were spotted easily, without the discomfort of the traditional boats that have >100 people on them. Kids will carry this memory for the rest of their live. Worth every ISK !

Husavik is among the best sites in the world for whale watching due to the rich nutrients, plankton and fish in the Skjalfandi Bay, not far from the Arctic Circle. But the excursions are all based on luck: with the weather, the ocean and the whales. I completely lucked out with an amazing outing on Aug. 28. After checking in, you're taken to a prep room to get dressed in heavy, insulated jumpsuits, then life preservers before boarding at the harbor. There were 9 of us in the RIB (which holds 12), plus the guide, Sophie, and captain, August, who did a great job. The weather was crystal clear but it was very wavy. Being bold, I took one of the front seats--BAD IDEA! The front gets the brunt of the waves and when the boat slams down, it's like hitting concrete...over and over again. You sit astride so you can balance your legs a little to simulate horseback riding in dealing with the waves but that only helps a little. It was also very cold and windy especially in the front. We paused a short way out where there were a few other boats, waiting for a whale that had dived. When you're stopped, you can move about the small boat. We only saw a few tails here and there. We went further out, and a curious humpback (I think! Maybe a Minke?) came right under our boat, surfacing in the front, and then diving right next to us. Sophie helped us move around to see this lovely creature with its fins blue in the water--I was eye-to-eye with it briefly! We went out 10 nautical miles and in the distance, saw a whale breaching! We raced toward it, got closer and closer, and it breached over and over again!! Wow, what a sight. Alas, it was time to return. I humbly sat at the back, as August had advised those of us who may have bad backs or are less enamored with roller coasters. It was a very smooth ride back there, even going fast. On our trip home, we passed two more humpbacks swimming together. I had seen whales in New England and Hawaii, but never so close and never breaching repeatedly. These Husavik images will remain etched in my memory forever. FYI, Husavik Adventures is not within the harbor like the other companies. It is to the right as you're facing the harbor, across the road, in a building without clear signage.

We definitely enjoyed the ride, but viewing whales' tails 3-4 times wasn't really whale watching. And the trip was less than advertised and paid for two hours, not good.
