About
The Húsavík Whale Museum is a non-profit organization established in 1997. The Húsavík Whale Museum is situated in Húsavík, a small town in north east Iceland, on the shores of Skjálfandi Bay, just below the Arctic Circle at 66° N. The museum’s purpose is to educate the public about whales, with emphasis on the species occurring in the North Atlantic. The exhibition provides informative and attractive displays that have the capacity to raise awareness about cetaceans and their environment. The scientific component includes an introduction to the museum’s research, which has been expanding since 2001 and now includes international collaborations and publications. The museum was acknowledged as an educational facility by the Icelandic Ministry of Education in 2007.

    “Whaley” good museum!
This museum exceeded my expectations! It is a small museum, but very well done! We spent about 1.5-2 hours here and learned a lot about the lives of whales. We didn’t watch the whaling documentary as we honestly just didn’t want to see that, so that would’ve added on an extra 30 minutes. Great value and impressive museum.

    Very Well Done Exhibits
This wonderful museum has two stories of exhibits all about the many kinds of whales and their habits. From their evolution from a land mammal to the full size skeletons on the second floor, there is much to see, read and learn. Allow plenty of time to fully appreciate this museum.

Make sure to visit while in Husavik!
We didn't stop here in 2022 but made sure to do so in 2024, regardless of the fact that our whale watching from Husavik got cancelled for 3 different dates between those 2 years... but I can see how the experience can be even more enjoyable/powerful here after seeing live Whales immediately prior! :) The blue whale remains and the display above are absolutely amazing - these 2 things by themselves are a reason to see this place! The heart of the blue whale exhibit is also mind blowing when compared to a standing human - it was bigger than my wife :) What I didn't care was the video about whaling in Faroe Islands - not only I had experienced whaling in Azores's and Madeira's whaling museums but also I am looking forward to visiting Faroe Islands next year, so it's not the whaling issue - I thought it just made no sense to me that in Iceland, and Husavik in particular aka the Whale Capital of Iceland (as one of the drawings on their walls read) we are watching a movie about another country (one could argue that this is to educate people about whaling but it's not like Iceland didn't do it in the past...) - I think a movie geared towards Iceland and about whales in general would be much more fitting than the Faroe Islands one!

The number of museums outside Reykjavik is obviously limited and I expect this is one of the more entertaining ones. It's not very big, but gives a good overview of the life and habits of whales and even has a life-size blue whale skeleton. It's not very big and most people will complete the museum in around thirty minutes, unless you watch the entire video at the end. It's a bit (too) dark and the ticket price isn't exactly cheap.

Thank you for the review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the visit. The average time people spend in the museum is around 1 hour. This is extended if you watch the 50 minute documentary in the theater room on the 2nd floor. Price is of course subjective, but for reference, 2.000 ISK would buy you a couple of small beers at a bar in Iceland. Kind regards, The Húsavík Whale Museum staff

We'd read about the Husavik Whale Museum in one of our guide books and were very glad that we visited. Great detail on all of the information boards and easy to read too. The array of specimens on display is awesome. All aspects of whales are covered, from telling the different species apart to their relationship with the Icelandic people. Other species of marine life e.g. seals and birds, are also included to help give context. The issues of plastic pollution etc are also addressed and make a thought-provoking aspect to the exhibition.

We visited here after our whale watching tour. North Sailing gave us a 20% discount voucher, children are also free so this was a great deal. We spent over an hour in here, the exhibits and information were excellent. Our teenagers really enjoyed this museam, it was a great add on to our whale watching experience.

Great museum to visit before or after your whale watching tour. Both options have advantages and disadvantages, so no real advantage either way. The main attraction on this museum is the bones of whales found washed up on the shores of Iceland. Meticulously recreated by scientists, these provide a unique opportunity to see the size and magnitude of these creatures. Displayed across the top of the museum across the ceilings, you can view them from many different angles. The story of each whale is provided next to the exhibits. The signs are provided in English, Icelandic and German. You can't miss this museum when visiting Husavik. Located just a couple of blocks away from the port, an easy walk, even in cold rainy weather.

The museum was very nice however the movie on their theater just really upset me and I left sad and confused. It was all about the Faroe Island and the narrative about why they love the whales and that is the reason they kill them. There is not one single reason why in our times whales should be kill, NO ONE and for a whales museum to promote this kind of bla bla bla is unacceptable. I absolutely regret the visit to this museum

We're genuinely sorry to hear about your disappointing experience. Our intention is to provide an engaging and informative visit at The Húsavík Whale Museum. We apologize if the movie content left you upset and confused. The purpose was to offer insights into diverse perspectives, but we understand your concerns. The documentary that we screen is called "Bloody Tradition" and speaks of who the people behind the Grind are, what their view is on the 'traditional' pilot whale hunt and how they look to the future of the Grind. Questions to which both sides - supporters and opponents of the tradition - want to know the answers, but will probably never agree on. We value your feedback and will take it into careful consideration as we continue to refine our exhibits. If you have any further thoughts or if there's a way we can address your concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to us directly. We hope to have the opportunity to make amends and provide a more positive experience in the future.

Always rare to find a completely non-boring museum with even cool an pretty items in the gift shop. We did this after the whale watching tour and genuinely learned something. The skeletons are pretty amazing in size as well.
Tip: You get a discount if you have whale watching tickets! (Normal entry price about 2000 isk for an adult)

Many museums have moved into activism, everything has a hidden and not so hidden agenda. But it is good to see a professional museum just giving you the knowledge and not trying to beat you death with some worthy message.
We really enjoyed our visit.

The museum curators have done an excellent job presenting all the facets of whales, how they live, what differentiates them from other animals (including humans), the dark period of whale hunting that drove many species close to extinction, the challenges that remain (including climate change), and the important role whales play in Earth's ecosystem. The top floor of the Museum displays a wide range of fascinating whale skeletons. It is a great introduction to a whale-watching expedition.

Very good museum in tiny Husavik. Entry price pretty steep at US $32 (4,400 Icelandic Krona) for 2 seniors. That being said, we enjoyed our visit.

I believe they had 12 full size whale skeletons…from Killer whales to Narwhal whales to a small Blue whale. Really cool! Good signage in English enhanced our visit.

Friendly staff, clean bathrooms.

Note-I bought 4 regular postcards and 4 stamps to the US for $20.00 (2,800 Icelandic Krona) in their gift shop. That was a stunner ☹️
