For our trip to Iceland, we wanted something more personalized that would include hiking and seeing things “off the beaten path”. Since my husband is a retired hydrogeologist, we wanted to explore the “cool geology” of Iceland more than the usual tours would offer. Also, we wanted to visit Husavik, now known as the town from the movie “Eurovision: Story of Fire Saga” and we are huge fans! The tours we initially found were group tours and focused on the Ring Road and major attractions (i.e. buses in and out) and would not include Husavik, and we also talked to a travel agent (who was honest and said she had nothing that would be suitable for what we wanted). We then did our own search for hotels in Husavik, found the Cape Hotel and from there found the Eurovision Walking Tour and were linked to Travel North. And we struck gold!! Travel North is based in Husavik, and after a couple of video chats with Francesco (forever now known as BEST.GUIDE.EVER) he designed and organized the most amazing tour. Truly a trip of a lifetime, he hit it all – the cool geology like volcanos, lava fields, glaciers, geologic formations, waterfalls, lakes, the hikes, museums and other cultural sites, and my personal favorite geologic sites – geothermal spas! It was all just simply wonderful. We stayed in Husavik for multiple days as kind of a “base camp” to do local day trips before heading out and taking the eastern side of the Ring Road back to Reykjavik with more amazing stops along the way! We did start our first day in Husavik with the Eurovision Walking Tour hosted by Guiditta – she did a fantastic job on hitting the highlights from scenes of the movie, and of course a stop at the Ja Ja Ding Dong Bar. We were thrilled to find out she was an extra in the movie!!! Definitely a highlight of the trip. Then, with Francesco as our guide/host, we simply met in the mornings, and were off for the day’s itinerary. Francesco is so knowledgeable about the geology, history, culture and fun facts about Iceland. AND he is very thorough with booking everything and attending to all the details while keeping us appraised with any changes and options due to road and weather conditions/volcano activity. And we saw the Northern Lights! While one can’t guarantee seeing the Northern Lights - conditions have to be just right for them to appear - it wouldn’t surprise me if somehow Francesco managed to organize that too. It was a “bucket list” dream trip – all we had to do is show up with our rain and hiking gear (and gifts for the elves!) After the first day we were already planning our next trip with Travel North and Francesco. Whether you choose to self-drive using one of their itineraries or make use of their guided tours, we highly recommend Travel North. You will be one happy traveler!
