The Thorbergur Center is a cultural center with an exhibition dedicated to the great writer Thorbergur Thordarson born in the area. You can get here also plenty of information of the icelandic culture. Also exhibited are photographs which show the community’s working and social life between 1930 and 1960. Beside the museum there is a gift shop and restaurant in this place. Good food, clean bathrooms, very friendly service at a good price.

This museum is located right off highway 1. The building is out in the countryside quite a ways from Hofn. You can recognize it by the wall of huge books on the outside of the building. The front of the building is a restaurant where we ate. We had cod and smoked char for lunch. The food was good, but not the best we had on our trip. I also had a hot chocolate, which was very good. They served it elaborately with lots of whipped cream. After lunch, we visited the museum, which was very interesting. The museum was fairly small. It showed the home of a farm family during earlier times in Iceland along with other interesting exhibits. It was really well organized and presented. They also exhibited some wonderful photographs of scenery in one of the dining rooms. Overall, it was a worthwhile stop.

Ordered “Grilled” lamb and all I got was a pre-cooked meat heated in the oven.
One chunk of meat was sour and smelly.
All of the sides were off the chart strange and the sauce from a package.

BUT !!!!
The price was through the roof, the only thing that was up.
Even though I got 50% discount due to my dissatisfaction.
Will never be back.

Good if you have the time, had a meal at the restaurant or are Thorbergur fan.

How to get there? in Hali farm. From Route 1, you will see a sign of the farm. As a reference, beside the route 1, there is a museum with a bookshelf, that is Hali. I could never understand it very well, but the hostel is in Hofn, not sure if is a Municipality, because Hofn the town is almost 66 km apart (55 minutes approx.) or what but be careful if you are looking to stay in/close to Hofn the town.

Experience: is a small museum dedicated to the writer Þórbergur Þórðarson (who grew up in Hali) and basically provides local history, maritime and farm related. You will see ships representation, the inside of turf house representation, the Thorbergur´s office representation, clothes and other pieces of his life.
The information is in Icelandic (I think so, so I could not understand a thing).
The thing I like it the most was the outside design and the very creative 2-meter-high bookshelf in the outside that you can side from Route 1, it has all of the books he wrote.
They also have a very, very, very good restaurant, where you need to try the fish. Simply delicious.

Opening Hours: Every day from 7:30 am to 9 pm (in winter from 8 am to 9 pm).

Cost: parking and admission are free.

Duration: 30 minutes or less.

We ate the chard meal and the warm ham/salami sandwich. Service was good and friendly. The Chard was very good. And the sandwich was good, but nothing special. We shared a warm apple cake dessert, which was yummy. We would go back to this place and we would recommend it. They offered free museum access since we paid for the meal. We were anxious to move on so we didn’t do the tour.

This is located at the Hali Country Hotel - the other side of the museum is the check-in. We didn't actually visit the museum (free if you are staying at the hotel), but the spectacle of the bookshelf is really cool!

This is a great stop. We enjoyed cappuccinos and a lunch plate. There were exquisite, large scale photos of everything Iceland on all the walls. There is also an exhibition (free!)--it is about a very famous Icelandic author--Thórbergur Thór∂arsson. The exhibition included detailed historical information about the region and Thórbergur's family & neighbors. Thórbergur captured the Icelandic spirit and his observations were quoted throughout the exhibition. He was gifted. English translations accompanied each Icelandic sign. The translator captured the beauty and poetry of the Icelandic language exceptionally well. Lunch was excellent and reasonable, the staff was courteous and the exhibition was fascinating.

The center itself is very interesting and worth visiting. We stopped over for lunch and for such a small and distant place I was amazed by the quality of fish - one of the best ones we had in Iceland.
If you are not far from Glacier Lagoon - definately a great place to stopover for food.
