Trausti was our guide for a tour I booked through Saga Travels. I have a young family (me, my wife, two girls below the age of 8 including a 3 year old). Trausti was simply fantastic in providing a very comfortable, stress-free travel experience for my family during a day that was filled with sub-optimal weather. We visited the Godafoss, Dettifoss,Lake Myvatn, Krafla lava fields that resembled the moon landscape, and the lava formations at Dimmuborgir. Trausti had great facts and details about every place and also provided us with the right amount of time to visit each place. Most importantly, when my daughter had challenges navigating knee deep snow in our walk towards Dettifoss, he was generous enough to offer a piggy back ride for her. He has a large heart, rich experience of the area, and simply a good human being. It was our privilege to go on a trip with him to these wonderful sights that North Iceland has to offer. We are looking forward to a future trip with him in the near future. Thank you Trausti!

Wow! Wow! Wow! This three day tour left me speechless and on cloud 9! A Geologists dream come true!
Iceland has so many activities that are quite expensive and to get three days with a guide of Trausti's experience for this price point is a great value!!!
My tour was wonderful!!!! I had a nice small group which was perfect! I would have hated to be on a large tour bus like others I had seen. We were never rushed at any destination, and were able to ask all the questions we desired. We had our own private tour guide to Iceland.. This is unheard of! Trausti happily answered all of my questions and soo much more! I can't believe all the knowledge and information that he has!
I can't wait to go back to Iceland and see Trausti again!

Just completed a 3 day tour with our fantastic guide -- Trausti.
This tour exceeded all expectations! The first day in Asjka was breathtaking . You feel as though you are driving on the moon. So many different geological environments in one area. We were very lucky to be able to swim in the geothermal bath in Asjka and it was very refreshing after taking the small hike to the caldera. Trausti is so experienced in the area and will point out things you'd never notice along the way.
The second day is the big physical day on the glacier . It is all uphill and strenuous . Make sure you have gaitors and walking sticks (well I needed them). Trausti knows the Glacier well and it is a major highlight. However there are options for smaller hikes.
This is such a unique tour and environment I highly recommend going with North Travel. Trausti is a true Icelander and experiencing this beautiful country with his guidance is a delight.

It was a delight travelling with you to these beautiful places in the remoteness of Iceland.
You did great on the glacier, and it was fun being around you.
Thank for choosing this trip, and your kind words.

Trausti Bergland operates North Travel, a tour operator. He took my family and I on a 3 day trip to Askja - Kverkjoll - Vanajokull Glacier in last July. Trausti knows this remote area inside and out. Besides being extremely knowledgeable, Trausti is both very friendly and helpful. This was my family's 2nd trip to Iceland. Nothing beats this 3 day tour with Trausti - it is without a doubt the highlight of our two trips to this spectacular country. It was worth every penny. Don't miss out on this opportunity to visit Iceland's interior with Iceland's best guide.

The trip of a lifetime!!! My teenage son and I went on this tour at the end of August 2017. Trausti was a fantastic guide- informative, relaxed and fun, he clearly loves his job. There were 5 in the group, we traveled in his Mercedes 4x4. The group was fun & we exchanged contact info at the end of the trip.
Day 1- a quick stop at the Godafoss waterfall and lake Myvatn. Then the real fun began- a 200 mile drive on lava track to the middle of nowhere!! The views were incredible and it's like nothing I've ever experienced (and this is my 3rd visit to Iceland.)
We went swimming in the Viti crater at Askja (milky blue water)- WOW!! The walk down was harrowing for me, it is really steep, but glad I did it.
We went on the long glacier hike with the ranger. We used safety ropes, it was a very intense uphill climb for hours. It was really challenging for me (middle age mom that hikes 90 min per day.). I hit the wall after 4 hours and Trausti (graciously) came up to meet me & walk us down the glacier (it's not safe to walk down without a guide). The rest of the group continued up the glacier and their pics were incredible! They went swimming in a lagoon, saw steaming water, the scenery is stunning. A once in a lifetime chance!
I was looking for a trip that got us away from everything, scenery, glacier hike, off road driving and driving through rivers- and this was the perfect trip for that. It is an excellent value for all of the boxes it checks - if you add up the cost of each activity, it is a huge bargain.
Bonus: this will get you totally off the grid. If you are a political junkie like me, it really forces you to get offline for a few days. I was able to text, but couldn't reach the internet or apps.
I highly recommend this trip- just do it!

We took a tour of Mt Askja and Kverkjull in mid August. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience. The sights are breathtaking and the experience is like no other places on earth I have ever been to. Trausti is a really knowledgeable, caring and service oriented tour guide. He never left us on our own. That is exactly what we need as we were traveling with my autistic son who needs extra attention. He took us to some of the really unique part of the country, made stops or pointed out to the most beautiful places I visited in Iceland. He could answer all our questions about the sights we visited and beyond.. and was ready with everything we need on the trip. We truly like this tour because all the places we visited are really pristine wonders. It gives us sense of peace. This tour is a totally different experience from tourist packed areas close to Reykjavik. It is truly like no other experiences I have ever been to. One of the highlight of this trip is for me to be able to swim in the warm water in Askja's crater. Trausti helped me to go down on a steep path and made it possible for me. It was the most amazing experience for me, the view was spectacular. Trausti and this trip was really above and beyond our expectations. I would really love to make this trip my annual getaway. Thank you Trausti for making it possible to travel to such a beautiful remote area with my son.

We took this tour with my family, two kids 12 and 14 and two adults. I didn't write this review right away because I wanted to digest our trip to Iceland and how this part of our vacation fit into this. It's hard to explain how a trip impacts you when you know that you are in one of the most remote places on the planet. The volcanic desert is simply awe inspiring. Few people were there despite that we went in July at the high of tourist season. Trausti is a fantastic, no nonsense tour guide that gave us tremendous depth to sometimes sparse landscapes. This tour was the highlight of our trip to Iceland, well worth the time, money and effort. Thank you Trausti for showing us this amazing little corner of our world!

We decided to do this 3 day trip during our 1st visit to Iceland - - and I am glad we did it. Trausti (our guide) picked us up from Lake Myvatn. It was just us and him. Since the beginning of the trip, we felt super comfortable with him. Very knowledgeable and extremely helpful and humorous -- it was fun with him around.
The overall experience of 3 days was pretty good.
On Day 1 we visited Askja -- I wish we could swim in the largest natural jacuzzi, but unfortunately, it was closed. Visited few other sites on the way.. We stayed in cabins for 2 nights. Kinda expensive !!!
Day 2 was a hike on the glacier. Challenging but a lot of fun. we had a ranger with us at all times -- which made us feel safe.
3rd day wasn't much -- but just driving back home.
Overall, its an expensive, which you should expect in Iceland for most activities, but a terrific trip.
Cheers,

Hi MPEG.
Great to hear from you and thanks for kind words.
It was a pleasure traveling with you all. It makes my job easy when people are open and interested and like to hear what I have to say.
The third day was not like normal third day, because the road that is usually driven back was still closed. Usually the third day we walk to Hvannalindir, a oasis in the lava which Fjalla Eyvindur, the most famous Icelandic outlaw build one of his huts.
I think that the price is fare, if you compare this with other companies which do 2 days trip in same areas for double the price of this trip.
Best regards from Kverkfjoll and the mountains. Trausti

We truly can recommend Trausti and the tour to Askja we undertook with him during summer.
We started preparing our tour per e-mail from abroad and we felt it was important to him to find the best programm for our wishes and our budget. And it was a full success, we had an unforgettable tour!
We felt very safe in this incredibly huge car, could stop whenever we wanted, the atmosphere was relaxed and the price charged was totally fair.
We would like to come back to Iceland, sooner or later, and we will for sure ask Trausti to take us for a tour again!

Stunning tour to the 'Center of Iceland'. Beautiful sights off the main tourist routes. We saw the cladera lake as a mirror with the surrounding mountains.
The hike on the glacier in Kerkfjöll was great, again a stunning nature, very different from Askia.
Travelling with Trausti means travelling with an experienced guide who gives information about the nature but also about the culture.
We enjoyed the trip very much, the highlight of our holiday.

How difficult are the hikes during this tour? Would someone who is regularly active have trouble? Do you need any special skills to fully participate? How many people are on each tour?
LucasKnopf
Amsterdam, The Netherlands7 contributions
No, no special skills required in general for the trip.
Still, if you wat to participate at the hiking on the glacier, that is quite demanding. It is scheduled as a hike of +/- 10 hours. Important are the clothes you wear. Have with you things that dry fast, no cotton. At the camp you get special things to put on your shoes for hiking on ice.
There is an alternative hike at the bottom of the vulkano, it is beautiful! For this hike nothing special is required.
When we did the trip we were just 4 people, but I know that the group can be as big as 12 people.
Enjoy your trip!
