Great architecture and design. Crushed volcanic rock is used for the facade on this Lutheran church. The art deco designs are hard to miss. The tower looms at the top of a hill over-looking all of Akureyri. Excellent views and a great photo opportunity. The church has a unique design and even if you don't have the opportunity to visit inside, it is worth the climb up the steps to see the church up close from the outside. As mentioned, you will also be rewarded with a great view from the top.

One of the focal points of Akureyri is its massive Lutheran Church Akureyrarkirkja. Built in 1940 by the same architect who built Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik. Sits high on a hill overlooking the city and harbor for great views of the area. Exterior is quite impressive. Unfortunately, it was closed so I didn't get to see inside.

Really lovely church, long stair case up to it. The external architecture is very interesting, inside the church is quite simplistic and minimalistic. Great view over the city and the fjord. This church is the best landmark of this town. Worth the visit.

This really is the imposing landmark of Akureyri, built on a hill overlooking the bay it gives awesome views looking at it from the fjord. or great views across the fjord once you get to the church. The building itself is quite unique and stunning and with the visit.

Good string concert with optional donation requested; watch for concert listings on board outside the church

It is ust a normal church, nothing special. I guess the Steps were the most spectacular thing there.

Quick a number of steps up to the church but you will get a good view of Akureyri from the top. Nothing really special about this church. glass windows and a proper church organ.

Did not feel very welcome as the Uncle was more interested in putting out a "close the door" sign. Does not smile at greetings.

I always like to visit different churches in other countries. This one was picturesque although after the hike up the stairway to Heaven I wasn't able to enter the church is was locked. A little disappointed but the views and serenity around it was worth it.

It is not something which can be missed when in town as this position ensures it stands out. It is fairly plain but very nice and still worth the visit up the numerous steps, as the view is good from the large area outside which gives a good all round vista.

Akureyri is located at the end of a huge fjord in northern Iceland. The sail in and out were as beautiful as anywhere. Shockingly wide, the fjord was maybe 30 to 40 miles long with farms on both sides of the ship. Our August cruise showed surprising shades of green accented with downhill streams and waterfalls. The town of Akureyri is quaint....small with some 18,000 people. The focal point is the church on the hillside with beautiful stained glass imported from Germany. Just above the church is a botantical garden, well worth an hour's stroll. The town, like the rest of Iceland, is very clean and totally free of trash, showing the pride of the residents.
