I finally got my Padi open water certification and am so happy I did it at Strýtan divecenter. The teacher was really experienced and I felt really safe in the water with him. He explained everything really well and even made the learning fun and told us stories to make the material real. I will be going back for my next advanced open water certification. I recommend Strýtan divecenter for anyone who wants to learn to dive. Great teachers with years of experience and a friendly atmosphere.

Two absolutely fantastic days diving. The dive sites I experienced here are truly unique and fascinating. The colossal Strýtan chimney, the playful Wolf Fish at Arnarnesstrýtur, the bubbling riverbed at Litla-Á and the crystal clear waters at Nasgjá.

I absolutely loved diving here and I hope to visit again in the future. I was also offered an opportunity to do an orientation dive the evening before which as a relatively inexperienced dry-suit diver was undoubtedly beneficial. Erlendur and Sævör are outstanding guides and instructors. The advice and guidance on the orientation dive made me feel much more comfortable in the water managing the different bouyancy complications. Their knowledge of the dive sites and the local area is phenomenonal, I really was fascinated. You can really feel the passion these guys have for diving here which was highlighted by the little museum they have in their dive center. On top of all this, they were incredibly friendly and accommodating, even offering me free transport to and from my accommodation.

I 100% recommend these guys. Thank you, Erlendur and Sævör for an awesome two days 👌

A truly incredible experience in iceland, one of a kind. We had the pleasure to dive with Erlendur Bogason who shared with us his passion for the local ecosystem. We had two very unique dives in the lake with close encounters with cods and the extraordinary wolffish. We also dove the incredible thermal chimneys. This is one of the only place in the world where you can do this type of dive. I could not recommend enough to take the time to do these dives. I wish I had more time to do a second day of diving with Strytan dive center and see more of the lake.

My dive buddy Mike Salvarezza and I made multiple dives in Iceland during 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Erlendur Bogason was our dive guide on all our trips to Strýtan.

Strýtan is one of the hydrothermal vents or white smokers found in the Eyjafjordur Fjord located off the shores of Hjalteyri, a small fishing village located near the town of Akureyri. Strýtan, as this location has been named, is a towering chimney-like geological formation rising to over 200ft (230m) from the ocean floor to nearly 50ft (15m) below the surface.

Erlendur is a great dive guide and owns Strýtan Dive Center. You are not going to find a more knowledgeable and better guide if you are looking to dive this amazing and a once in a life time location of Northern Iceland. Make sure you ask Erlendur to take you to Nesgla, a crack or fissure in the Earth’s crust formed through tectonic activity and flooded with water of unbelievable clarity!

The dive center has everything you need. There's an area where you can eat your lunch, a warm locker room where you can get into your dry suit, a place to store your dry clothing, as well as an area where you can rinse and dry your dive gear. This is very convenient if you are planning to spend a few days diving this location with the Strýtan Divecenter. Diving was done using a zodiac or rigid inflatable boat, which was perfect, because the dive locations are only a short distance away.

If you never dove on a hydrothermal vent or a white smoker, then you have to come and dive with Erlendur from Strýtan Dive Center.

You will not be disappointed!

This will be a decent-sized review. If you want a quick answer if you should go, go without a doubt. You won’t regret it. You’ll treasure it forever. Matter of fact, after six reviews, I stopped reading it for if I should go and started reading the reviews because of anticipation. It’s not a complete trip to Iceland until you’ve done Strytan. It is the only place in the world that you can dive a geothermal chimney. Both Little and Big Strytan are incredible. For both dives, there was a lot of run off from melting snow. So much that there was a freshwater layer above, dove down to a halocline, and then got to the saltwater. Little Strytan takes the crown for tons of life. We were each given clam meat from a shell. Tons of cod came out and ate from our hands. They would even let you pet them. We saw quite a few wolf fish, but they weren’t hungry at the time. The geothermal chimney there was beautiful. We got to feel the water coming out of the earth. Big Stryan is amazing in its own way. It is a huge column with tons of little geothermal pots releasing water. This dive must be earned. I will talk more about it later. I got to feel the warm water from the chimney. We saw cod swimming up and down. Even saw a baby lump sucker going up the line. Chimney on top looks incredible, and has tons of water coming out. Those dives you’ll be able to talk about for years.
Erlendur owns and operates the shop and the tour. He is top notch. Very nice, and speaks fantastic English. He is great at answering e mails and answering the phone. He answered all of my e mails. I sent a ton to him, and he answered very one of them. He made sure we had a good time. Night before he took us along the beach to look at the drift wood. He found a place for us to stay because we had been sleeping in our vehicle. He showed us his museum. It is quite a sight. You can see what you are going to dive. He takes great pride in what he does. Shop and equipment are top notch. 2/7 dives of my cold water dives, my regulator went into free flow. The 2/7 where it didn’t was at his shop. I loved the dry suit. Boat got us where we needed to be. He also has beer and soda for you. The hot tub near the shop is a nice place to rest after the dive.
The next part is not to scare, but be aware: you need to have really good buoyancy. It is a requirement. From the website, they tell you need a certain number of dry suit dives. If Erlendor does not feel you have good control in a dry suit, he’ll call the dive. The first dive (Little Strytan) is a test dive to see how well you do. If you don’t do well enough, you won’t move on to Big Strytan. He’s not being mean--your safety is paramount. The bottom of Strytan is over 200 feet to have to recover you. The chimneys are rare and break easily. I would recommend doing some dry suit dives before you come, and do Silfra to practice up. It is a dive not to be missed. It is incredible, and amazing. I will have to go see Strytan again when I come back up. I was also worried about the low number of reviews. I soon learned after seeing all the positive reviews, that there was nothing to worry about. He is top notch. Reviews here shouldn’t be used to gauge if he is good--he is without a doubt one of the best--but should be used to know you are about to do something incredible. We got to do both dives, and will tell people about this until the day we die.

We went to Iceland for our honeymoon and are avid divers. We heard about diving the geothermal vents around iceland and discovered strytan.is. We book some dives and went.

Erlendur (the operator) was a hospitable host who joined us for dinner the night prior and spent a lot of time explaining the area, the dives and the history of the site. It was a very interesting story on how the vents were originally discovered.

We dove both the big vent and the small vents. The big vent was simply breathtaking, I have never seen anything like it and the hot water coming out from the top is one of a kind. There is a lot of life on the chimney including wolf eels.

The little vents had cod everywhere, lots of wolf eels and lumpsuckers. This was one of the best underwater video ops we did. Here is a link to a video from our trip.

During our second dive, we filled a thermos with hot fresh water from the vent and made it into hot chocolate on the boat! (how cool is that)!

We highly recommend this dive to anyone that is looking for a very cool adventure. It is not cold at all in the dry suits and the scenery is stunning even above the water. If you liked this dive, you can also check out silfra to the south.

Had a great time diving the fumerals at Strytan. Erlendur made the experience very easy and comfortable. Diving from a zodiac felt very Jacques Cousteau. Only my 5th dry suit dive, but he made it a good experience with good equipment. After surfacing we then proceeded to follow whales around the fjord for about 25 minutes getting within 10 meters. Simply spectacular. A great experience. Due to entry and exit via zodiac, it does require some level of physical ability, and you must carry your own gear. I'd do it again in a minute.

We had a fantastic time diving with Erlendur! He and his daughter, Saevor, were wonderful hosts. They were personable, easy to communicate with, and very competent. They were both quick to laugh and made the diving experience one of our favorite memories from our trip to Iceland! The Arnarnesstrytur vent was fascinating--there were cod and wolffish begging for cockles, and starfish, anemones, sea cucumbers, and jellyfish surrounding the vents. After our dive, we crossed the bay and saw humpback whales up close--it was amazing! We also enjoyed Erlendur's museum and he and Saevor's wealth of knowledge about the area. Thank you for such a great experience Erlendur and Saevor!

Went diving with Strytan Divecenter for the second time and it was great again. Erlendur and Saevor are super chilled, offer a lot of information and are super fun being around. The divesites they have to offer are amazing. A lot of marine life to see and the hydrothermal chimneys are obviously a very unique thing to explore on this planet.
