- Chris MWetherby, United Kingdom1,676 contributionsA very old and strikingly large building, with understated exteriorWe visited this cathedral, whilst visiting the city on a cruise. It is a large relatively plain but impressive building, having a commanding position in the centre of the city. The inside is quite striking, particularly in size, when looking down the nave from either end - the altar at one end and a very large high level organ at the other. Definitely worth visiting if in the cityVisited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 3, 2024
- StalevarEspoo, Finland771 contributionsMonumental Ancient Cathedral of Turku!Impressive ancient well preserved huge cathedral, where you can see a lot and feel a lot about the religion and centuries past. Located well in middle of the city. Looks gorgeous. I wonder in a summer time even better. Recommended!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 6, 2024
- Leanne JNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom29 contributionsPeaceful spot, beautiful building with distinctive architectureWe arrived in Turku very early after an overnight ferry, before most things had opened, so we decided to walk around the town a bit. Fortunately the weather was beautiful and it is a very attractive, walkable city. We loved it. Walking from the market square along the river to the cathedral is easy and filled with interesting buildings. The cathedral was not yet open when we visited so we only explored the outside, but it’s very photogenic and has a lovely tree-filled park. Actually we got talking to a Greenpeace charity collector while we were outside and they told us about plans to protect the park, which is great. As we walked around we watched fieldfares (birds) amongst others. It’s a lovely space to chill out in the city and also features some restaurant and bar tables nearby.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2024

Turku, Finland's oldest city, also has two of the most important monuments of the country: the Castle and the Cathedral, both from the end of the 13th century, when the town was founded by the Swedes.
The Cathedral lies about 3km away from the Castle on the north side of the river Aura. Today there is a small park and square in front of the church, which can be seen from far away thanks to its over 100m high tower. The building consists mainly of red brick and what we see today dates mainly from after the Great Turku Fire of 1827, when most of the town was destroyed.
In the interior the worthwhile to look at altarpiece, frescoes, pulpit all date from the 19th century, just as the tower. More recent are the organs of the cathedral. Outside the cathedral is a pleasant café with outdoor seating.

Despite the many subsequent reconstructions, which the museum on the upper floor reports on in a relevant panel, this cathedral, consecrated in 1300 and then passed to the Reformation, maintains a notable charm, outside and inside. Its imposing naves, chapels - in one of which there is the beautiful marble tomb of a seventeenth-century Swedish queen - and paintings make it much "warmer" than the Lutheran churches we are used to. Some elements dating back to the Middle Ages - a reliquary and a couple of statues - embellish an ensemble that, in these latitudes, is truly rare to find.

Outside of Helsinki, on our self drive trip, we found attractions and nice towns but not as much to see as other contires. Turku is an exception. The Turku Cathedral is 900 years old and really worth a visit. Do not rush through but take your time going through the chapels and looking at the floor for the burial stones. This cathedral has been around for a very long time and it has a lot of history. The other thing we really appreciated is that there are many signs in multiple languages explaining what you are seeing. We did not have time to go into the tower but I imagine it would also have been a good vantage point and worth the time to do it. I believe they do have tours but we were there on a Monday when many things are closed in Finland. I might also mention that there were many Finnish school children there and they all seemed engrossed in the explanations being given by their teachers.

This medieval church is called the National Shrine of Finland. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Finland's first bishop, St Henry. The oldest parts of the church go back to the 13th century.
The church is 89 meters long, 38 meters wide, and 44.5 meters high. The height of the striking tower is 85.5 meters.
Don't forget to visit the Cathedral Museum with a small entrance fee. It takes you on a journey through history from the early 1300s.

I have visited this cathedral years ago as a tourist. As magnificent as the building is at is own, this time I wanted to experience it in it's intended use. The service is on Sundays 10.00 am. Beautiful amosphere, I especially enjoyed to hear the organs being played.

Unless you are very much into churches, the best way for me to enjoy this building is to sit at the outside restaurant/food stand area close by, and just chill there. You will have the church in the background for the pictures, and at the same time, the feeling that you are in the city center.

I visited Turku Cathedral during the summer and even after visiting other Cathedrals such as Antewrp and München I was pleasantly surprised by this “small” one.
To anyone who is interested in Finnish history this is the place to explore. It’s not merely religious site but also the last resting place to many important people of medieval Finland. Stained-glass windows and several tomb monuments in side-chapels are beautiful sight to anyone, religious or not.

You cannot miss it if you are in Turku. You can see it miles away.
It is free admission for starters. And quiet, cool place to sit and marvel at the vaulted ceiling and side chapels. The reformation stripped the cathedral of the wall illustrations but the whitewashed interior is still a sight to see.
Some of the things I thought would be there were not (The coffin of St Henrik?). Also the information on the sidechapels was a bit....limited. Maybe because it is a working church?
All in all, a must to see. There is nothing quite like this elsewhere in Finland. Might be a good idea to read about its history online before entering, though.
