Only Helsinki and Rauma had libraries before Turku.

Turku Main Library consists of two buildings. The Dutch late Renaissance-style building was constructed in 1903. It resembles the House of Nobility in Stockholm. The interior is stunning.

Next to the old one, a new library building was completed in 2007. The main material here was concrete and the building received the 2007 Concrete Construction Award.

The two buildings are connected by a corridor that runs through the News Market where people can read newspapers. You can visit Café Sirius located in the former governor's office building.

Very superior excelsior establishment, everything is new, open and a lot natural light. It’s nice to just to come inside to warm up at winter -25 ℃ when just crossing by. You don’t have to be an customer, loan a book or return late music records, everybody is welcome

It`s fantastic.
Situated in the middle of town at the side of the river in an old building with a lot of character. The facilities are top jolly though. Books galore, in all sorts of languages, able personnel, loads of computers to go in the net, reading corners with comfy chairs or cushions, newspapers, magazines... you name it, they`ve got it.
You can spend hours there and not be bored...

One does not usually think of a library as a tourist destination, but make the Turku City Library a stop in your plans. My husband and I thought that the wonderful library in Amsterdam could not be beat, but the library in Turku / Åbo tops it! The city has done a wonderful job expanding the original building (built in 1903). A five year old addition is beautiful and compliments the original structure.
The fantastic library is very innovative in its marketing and services. There is something for everyone. The draw is so huge that nearly 3% of the city’s population visits it every day! My husband and I were impressed with the children’s area. There are cool places to read books; there are neat children’s exhibits to stimulate the kids, and there is even a special reading room for parents and their children. The collections of children’s books, comics, magazines, films and games are always being updated.
A well-lit reading area is always full of patrons. People were reading newspapers from across the EU and books from this great library. Natural light flows in to the room due to the expansive windows.
As with many libraries in Europe, one can purchase food and drinks at the library (Libraries in the United States: take note of this!). During the summer, the Italian Café Sirius extends on to a terrace out on the library courtyard. On the first floor, one can improve their skills on the pianos in the music room or listen to the latest music on demo recordings. The library claims to have 40,000 musical recordings. It is definitely a place to relax and unwind while stimulating the mind.
Modern technology at the library offers makes it easier to use the library. One can borrow and return materials in every department using automatic lending machines. There is library staff to help if necessary, but it appeared to us that everyone was effortlessly using these machines. The materials are sorted and sent to the relevant departments with a conveyor belt that can be viewed through the floor. It is cool to see the books going by under your feet!
If you do not spend a lot of time here, make it an architectural stop. The beauty of the buildings will make it very pleasing for your eyes. Turku City Library is open every day except holidays.

I don't understand why it's on top of TripAdvisor. It's very nice building and has an extensive selection of books. But still, it's just a library!

It was lovely to wander the shelves and spot the English books and books in Finnish by well-known authors. Knowledge just seeps in at the seams here. Lovely calm visit and time can be spent just enjoying the architecture. Short 20 minute visit as we don't read Finnish.

It is open for everyone and in daily use. Just remember to be quiet. They do have books in other languages too, just ask the staff if you are interested in finding some. Beautiful mixture of old and new and they have a cafe as well.

The library is a beautiful building in an easily accessible place. Take a minute to read your local newspaper in the middle of a longer holiday and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

I visited this place towards the end of my trip. It was more a case of just not having anything else to do. Have to admit it is one of the best libraries I've ever seen. If I was a resident I could see myself visiting the place a lot more often with some great facilities provided.
