Tampere Art Museum is Finland’s third oldest art museum.

The 2022 Summer Exhibition presents the works of two Young Artists of the Year: Emma Jääskeläinen and Kristian Krokfors.

There were not very many works. So the museum was quite quickly toured.

Luckily, we have Finnish Museum cards and didn't have to pay the entrance fee of 12 euros.

If you don't know what Moomins are or don't understand their charm, this museum is not for you! The Finnis will always have a very special place in their hearts for Tove Jansson and her dear little Moomins. Luckily I have been a Moomin devotee for many years and found this museum completely entrancing! The museum can be a little difficult to find as it under the main public library, but once you do, you will have trouble leaving! There is a model of the Moomin house, lots of original picture by Tove Jansson. There are also activities for children including playing the Moomin’s row boat and some computer based as well. The gift shop will truly amaze you and is a great place to get gifts and souvenirs of Finnland (what could be more Finnish than Moomins?). As I said though, if you haven’t read the books by Tove Jansson, or seen the cartoons, this museum will make no sense to you what so ever. If you have read the books or seen the cartoons, prepare for a very sentimental journey to Moomin Valley! Photos are not permitted inside the museum. English text is available for all the displays.

The small museum building near the Metso library is filled with mostly unknown works of local artist Joseph Alanen. He used tempera painting technique with light, shady colours to create mythical pictures of our national epic Kalevala. The chosen style resembles comic book characters with strongly painted outlines and extreme positions. The impressive Lemminkäinen and the Great Serpent was finished in 1920 just before his early death at the age of 34 in the current world epidemic Spanish fever.

Nice exhibitions from two persons (Holmström) and young artist (Rönkkö) of the year 2019. If you are familiar with their art or like to know more about them, this is a good place to visit.

Thank you for you feedback. The Moomin Museum tells the story of all 12 Moomin books written and illustrated by Tove Jansson. You will find information on the printed guide books or in the info panels that you can browse in several languages but you can just look around and admire the works on your own pace. The museum is suitable for adults and children alike. Welcome again!

A must for adults and children alike. The miniatures and models are amazing along with the extracts from the books...this place is magical. When I visited I had the whole museum to myself and quite happily spent the whole afternoon looking at the displays and reading the information. It may not be so magical when hundreds of kids are running around!!!!!!

It's a cool place, although when I visited the place as a child, I was waiting for something less... art museum like. Definitely worth of visiting, even with children :D

Tove Jansson's Mumintroll books became a big hit in England in the 1950s. They filtered through to our children's library when I was in primary school. Jansson was a graphic artist who could also tell a great story, and the Mumin stories certainly were something to us as kids. The museum is a treasure trove of Jansson's drawings and paintings, plus stunning tableaux of the main scenes from the books. The subdued lighting makes this a magical grotto (it's under the public library). We made a day-trip by express train from Helsinki (2 hrs each way, 160 kph!). It's the second time we've been there, and if we ever get back to Finland, it'll be a must on our list of things to do.

the place is small, but it is neatly arranged. the collections are quite complete, from comic strip drawing to oil-based paintings. all drawings are original and signed by the Author. there are three languages for directions, Finnish, Swedish, and Japanese. I came on museum day on May 18th, so I got free entrance.

The museum is very interesting. It has several installations and sketches. Despite its small size, it is a nice place to look on the process of creation of world famous comics.
