Aalto studio is a great place and an insight view to Aalto's life and work. This is more like architecture office house but perhaps more interesting is The Aalto House. I recommend these both. One hour visit/each.

We visited the studio yesterday as part of our combination ticket of studio tour at 11:30 am and Aalto house (see other review) at 1pm. We had booked our tickets online a few weeks ahead but there were 2 people who were able to secure the last two spots on the day. Interestingly our 11:30am tour was full but the 12:30pm tour only had 2 people booked!

We got to the studio about 5 minutes early to check in and remove our shoes (you can either remove your shoes or put protective plastic booties on over to the top of your shoes).

The tour started promptly with a short background talk in the "taverna" (the staff dining hall) from where we moved on through the different studio spaces. The lady who gave the tour spent about 30 minutes taking us through all the spaces open to the public. We then had another 30 minutes to ourselves in the spaces, to be able to go back and take better photos and explore on our own. We were able to ask questions as we went through the spaces.

There are some interesting things on display in the studio: ceramic tiles made to spec by arabia, different versions of the aalto stools, a picture display on the restoration of Aalto's library in Vyborg.

It is nice to walk around the studio's exterior. There is a little path all the way around. You could do that if you get there early, or after the tour.

There are 2 toilets available to guests at the studio as well as a nice little shop.

Its easy to get to Munkkiniemi using the Number 4 Tram. We stayed on the tram until its last stop (before it does a small loop to return back to the city). The last stop is called Saunalahdentie (Stop no 0127) which is right by a very nice cafe restaurant Torpanranta which is on a little beach with nice views. We took an earlier tram to make sure we got to the tour on time and then spent some time on the little beach and had a coffee in this cafe. From here the studio is only a 5 minute walk. We liked the cafe so much we went back later for lunch!

All in all it was a very enjoyable day out in Helsinki.

Visiting Aalto's studio was a must on our to-do list when planning our visit to Helsinki. As design and mid-century architecture enthusiasts, the studio tour did not disappoint. The tour includes a guided tour in English lead by a lovely guide for 30 minutes and then 30 minutes to explore the space and take as many photos as your heart desires. Our tour group was small (8 people) and our guide was knowledgeable, prepared, and well spoken. We also took the Aalto house tour afterwards, which I recommend as well. This tour was a highlight of our visit to Finland.

I toured this before seeing Aalto's house, and I think that was a good order to see them in. There is a 30 minute tour, and then you are free to wander the studio for 30 minutes and take as many pictures as you like. Still used by the Aalto foundation, but you can see all the main rooms and get a good idea of Aalto's work.

Paired with the Aalto home tour, this makes for a great outing when visiting Helsinki. Similar to the home tour, it’s nice to have half an hour to look around on your own and take photos.

We took a short bus ride to visit the a Didrichsen House on the same day.

Don't miss Alvar Aalto's studio even if you aren't crazy about architecture.

Visitors can only see the studio by joining a guided tour. The maximum number of people allowed is around 20 so it's advisable to book online in advance to make sure you can get in after travelling half an hour from the city centre (take tram 4).

The tour was very informative. The explanation took about 30 minutes and afterwards we could walk around by ourselves. The whole tour lasted about an hour.

I combined my visit with a guided tour of Aalto's house which is only a few minutes' walk away.

There were some more new finding during guide tour in the studio. The studio is modern enough and good example of timeless design with interesting details!

If you like architecture and even if you don't know Aalto it's worth the shot.
Nice neighborhood with the sea very close.
You can also visit the Aalto house nearby. There is a combined ticket.
It's only on guided tours and it's not very clear on the website.

I strongly recommend a visit to this house before deciding who's the all-time greatest Finnish designer of houses and furniture. In 1936 Alvar Aalto designed his masterpiece The 43 Chaise Lounge easy chair where I can't afford even to sit on. Alvar also made some huge mistakes in buildings designs, all of them protected by Finnish law unlike the mistakes made by top surgeons here.
