When I was student, I learned to know the university inside and outside. It is marvelous place to have a education. Usually a tourist looks at the building outside. The masterpiece of new classical architecture by Engels. So pure classical example. I love those Ionian pylons and the fine pediment.

Entering from the Senate Square doors you can admire the copies of Greek statues on several floors though the renovation still continues. The oldest seat of higher learning in Finland was established in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Turku with faculties in theology, philosophy, law and medicine. Under the Grand Duchy it was moved to Helsinki as the Imperial Alexander University for which architect C.L.Engel designed the Empire style building in 1832. After Finland gained independence from Russia in 1917 the univerisity got finally its present name.

The University of Helsinki is the oldest and largest institution of academic education in Finland.

It has been located in Helsinki since 1829 but was founded in the city of Turku in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo.

University operates on four campuses: City Centre, Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki Campuses.

Around 40.000 students are currently enrolled in the degree programs spread across 11 faculties.

The entrance is particularly selective (only 15% of the applicants are admitted). The University of Helsinki has been ranked among the top 1 % of the world's universities.

There is a university museum with free entrance in the university main building located on Fabianinkatu.

I was here for a conference late August and begining of September. The university itself is rather impressive as it's modern and very up to date on all equipment.
Everyone speaks English and Swedish and are happy to help you.
The canteens are spread across the campus and some have amazing view of the city. There is always plenty of choice even for vegans

Standing on the left side of the Senate Square the main building of Helsinki University is part of the neoclassical city center designed by C.L.Engels in 1832. It is now under renovation to last another 200 years yet functioning so you can enter from the other side to look at the classical corridors with historical furniture. The University museum is also located here and there are two lunch restaurants on the ground floor.

This bilingual university bears many superlatives:

1- One of world’s leading multidisciplinary universities specialising in the area of research.
2- The oldest and largest university in Finland.
3- It has the widest range of disciplines available.
4- It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world and among the 20 best universities in Europe.

Being myself a teacher and a researcher, I love its slogan: All teachers are researchers and all researchers teach.

Admission is usually determined by entrance examinations. Entrance is particularly selective.

I wish I had studied there! Loved visiting it!

Not really a tourist attraction, but nice enough to walk past if you're already in the vicinity. A few good buildings to look at and a few fairly average specimens (as is common with universities around the world).
