The Bank of Finland displays its art collection to the public only once a year, the exhibition was now extended over three days as people have been queuing around the block. There is a long historical connection between finance and art in Finland as we had our own currency and banknotes designed by famous architect Eliel Saarinen before the independence from Russia. Established in 1811 the Bank has allways made its aim to collect living artists many of whom have become central figures in their field like Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

Suomen Pankki was started in Turku in on the 1.3.1812 and is the 4 oldest bank in the world, it moved in 1819 to Helsinki. In the beginning it had the task to print the Rubel and Kopek as Finland was part of Russia.
In !860 it changed to Finish Mark. It is located in the older part of Helsinki not fare away from the Senat Square. The front is like a little park with flowers and a statue of J. Snellmann. A very nice building.
The bank today employ 380 people. Only looked from the outside.

The Bank of Finland was founded in 1811 by Emperor Alexander I.

The head office of the Bank of Finland is located in Kruununhaka. The beautiful building was completed in 1883.

There is a statue of Johan Vilhelm Snellman locating in front of the building. He had an important role that Finland got its own currency the Markka in 1860.

From 1999, Finland has been part of the Eurosystem.

Once a year when the Finnish Bank shows a small part of the precious art collection for the public the queu reaches quickly around the block. On other occasions there is no entrance further than the lobby of the palace built in 1883. Statue of the great statesman and fennoman J.V. Snellmann guards the site as it did during the Winter War bombings, the hits are left unrepaired at the base. The modern sculpture of acclaimed female Finnish artist Eila Hiltunen, the designer of the Sibelius Monument stands neglected at the back yard.

During a walking tour of this beautiful city we got to see many beautiful buildings and sites that wouldn't normally take notice of. We love to know the story behind the cities statues/monuments. the one at the front of the bank, is of Johan Snellman, was the founder of the nations currency.

A good photo op and a well grazed flowers that adore the frontage. It is the central bank of Finland and the fourth oldest central bank in the world. Established on 1.3.1812 with the statue of Johan Vilhelm Snellman in the front courtyard. I recommend a great tourist sight with oldness within grasp.
