The exhibition itself was nice. However, were very disappointed to find out that the movie that we had been very much looking forward to, was presented only in Finnish!

Sadly watching the movie is going to be useless for most of the tourists. I strongly recommend the museum to make the effort to add at least English subtitles, thank you!

The museum was OK, it is not that big and considering the history of the fortress has hardly any stuff in it. It was also poorly organised, the things they did have didn't seem to be ordered in any chronology. The woman on the desk took my money for an admission ticket first, and then told me straight after that the movie part was reserved for a private function. Entrance fee also seemed slightly overpriced for what you got.

Military museum on one of the islands off Helsinki, where you explore Finland's war history and where some of the weapons are interactive.
On the island itself there is also a submarine but the entrance is separate.
It has a very large souvenir shop.

There is little leisure-cultural offer in Helsinki, so everything available is advisable to visit.

This was one of the major attractions open during winter. It contains a cafe, souvenir shop and a museum. The museum is nothing very special, but they show a history movie of about 15 mins, starting every half an hour or so which will tell you the history of all of Finland and majorly of the island of Suomenlinna. It is very interesting, albeit a little dramatised version, but we enjoyed it a lot.

I've always thought of Suomenlinna as a Swedish creation that just happens to be on Finnish "soil". For me this Unesco World Heritage site has been more than a place to revere on my national feelings, a nice green area close to the sea, an ideal place for strolls and picnics. However, visiting the Suomenlinna Museum opened my eyes to seeing, what a Finnish man Augustin Ehrensvärd really was. He cared deeply of his homeland, and even though that homeland went then by the name of Sweden and he himself was born in the smack middle of modern day Sweden, he had many traits which can be called Finnish and Suomenlinna was a place that he deeply cared for. Even when Sweden was ready to give up on Suomenlinna for being a money pit, he stood by his creation and kept on building upon it. There's a video playing every 30 minutes in the museum, which really emphasizes this. The video can be listened via headphones in many languages.

If you only visit one place in
Helsinki, this World Heritage site should be it. There are four islands, linked by bridges, which were massively fortified in the 17th Century to protect the harbour and town of Helsinki. Nowadays you can explore the whole place to your hearts content and whether it's military history (Mark's choice) birds and flowers ( my thing) or just enjoying the sea views (both of us) the place is a delight. Our children are grown up now but it was lovely to see children running round and exploring in safety. There is even a tiny sandy beach for those brave enough to go into the icy water.

There are hundred of historic buildings, many of them housing cafés and restaurants, museums and boutique shops. Around 900 people actually live there, so there is a small shop and school. You can easily spend all day here, and it is completely free of charge.

To get there, you catch the ferry at Kauppatori which runs about every 20 minutes and takes about 10 to make the crossing.

Went in as a respite to the cold, managed to get in on time to catch a very informative 25min video that they play giving a good overview of the history of Suomenlinna. On the way back to the ferry stopped in as we had lost a key and they were very friendly and helpful, they took our number and promised to call us if they found anything. Thank God, a few hours later my phone rang and someone had handed in the key! So definitely above and beyond customer service :)

This museum is one of the few places here that are open throughout the winter season. Unfortunately it's not very well structured. There is a lot of information to be found, but it's a little disorganised and often presented as a massive wall of text with little else. I could read a book rather than visiting a museum, if that's what I wanted. So I was left a little disappointed.

Small museum but ok, the part about construction I found boring which is the half of the museum. The other part was nice.

Chose to go here for the advertised 25 minute video outlining the history of the island. The other displays are relatively enlightening, though much of the info is available in the basic guide to the island together with the displays dotted throughout.
We waited for a short while to see the short film, hoping for it to be engaging and informative, but to be honest it did very little for us. It offered little extra and almost sent us to sleep! This had been the main reason for our visit to the musuem so it was a little disappointing.
