First of all, let's dispel any doubts that others might have. She IS a mermaid. However, for those who might bother to learn a little history and art appreciation, she is a mermaid who has forsaken the sea for dry land, thus has feet and legs. She is a symbol of rebirth, that of the city of Helsinki itself.

This is, without exaggeration, the most beautiful and significant outdoor piece of art in Helsinki and is executed in Art Nouveau style. The statue has had its controversies, especially at the beginning when some people thought the sea lions were leering at the female nude. Even today impotent men who are also superstitious bathe their faces in water from the sea lions' mouths in the hopes of a cure.

In bronze on a plinth of what I believe is called rapaakivi, a sort of granite, this statue is an integral part of the life of the capital and a site of celebrations and ceremonies.

It is an absolute "not-to-be-missed"!

Caused an uproar with some when first launched to the public in 1908. The intention of the sculpture was to symbolise the rebirth of Helsinki. Its iconic to Helsinki.

When we were in Helsinki we walked to the mermaid expecting something like in Copenhagen. However when we arrived there, we couldn't find the mermaid. We looked around and found two small mermaids in the park. But those couldn't be the famous statue. Oh there was a statue, not of a mermaid but of a woman. We asked around and then we heard that this was the statue...

So don't bother coming here, it's just a statue like dozens of other statues in the city.

Most people will talk about the beauty or symbolism of this statue - but I’m going to mention an important factory, the spray off the fountain will cool you down on a hot day!

Havis Amanda has been on this place more than a hundred years. And still it looks young and beautiful. If you happen to be in Helsinki on the last day of April, do not miss a special event when students wash her. Its beginning of a holiday called Vappu.

This sculpture is on the edge of the harbour and Esplanade Park. She is surounded by seals and when I visited, Christmas markets sat at her feet. She wore a garland of flowers and frankly was quite beautiful. This was one of the few sculptures that was crafted with softer lines than the austere Russian sculptures that seem to dominate. It suggests a lighter spirit in the city.

Considered the spirit of rebirth for the city of Helsinki, this beautiful statue and fountain is rife with legend, custom, and tradition. it is even thought that a man washing his face in the water and shouting Rakastaa! will increase his virility. Unfortunately, the water had been drained from the fountain in preparation for the coming ice and snow, so I missed out on this epic tradition. Still well worth the short walk to see it.

This statue and fountain is located in between the end of Esplanadi Park and the Kauppatori open air market. It is very well done and a nice place to take photographs. We enjoyed it.
