We enjoyed the visit. The museum is organised according to different time periods showing the old to modern periods in Finnish art.

At the time of my visit (October 2015), most of the museum was closed for renovation. However, a couple of rooms on the ground floor were kept open for visitors so they could get a glimpse at some of the paintings. The museum is conveniently located just opposite Helsinki's central railway station. Free entry for Helsinki card holders!

We had time only to see the works of Alice Neel and found the exhibition to be extraordinarily well done with translations into three languages, displays laid out based on the time in her life and ending with a bio and a set of frames where one could attempt to produce a portrait. Some six dozen of Neel's works were... More

Interesting exhibitions and a good selection of best and most loved Finnish art around 1900. Not too big, nice museum shop, cafe is a bit too plain.

This was an interesting visit as we had not had an opportunity to see many Finnish paintings . The galleries were thoughtfully laid out with explanations in Finnish ,Swedish and English . Best of all , and something I had not seen before ,there was a 'selfie' section were there were all the self portraits of the artists whose work... More

Weary footed, we started at the top and worked our way down here - and soon found our aches and pains were forgotten as we absorbed ourselves in this wonderful gallery. The temporary exhibition of Alice Neel on the top floor was actually excellent. Neither myself nor my husband are great modern art fans, but this one was really good.... More

Whilst the breath of Finnish painters is impressive, all the art- save for a piece of two- is from the 1800s and later. If that's your thing, great. If not, like myself, I was impressed by only three works of art amongst all the floors and was done with it all in 20 minutes tops. The temporary exhibition on Alice... More

Highlights a lot of Finish artists but also some international. Some amazing pieces. I am not an art snob and so dont understand or care for a lot of the interpretive stuff but there are some wonderful and beautiful pieces.

For anyone serious about art, this is essential-- especially because it exposes you to regional art that I would otherwise know nothing about. Beautiful building, extremely professional curation etc.
