Probably the best museum in Finland

This is the best museum in Helsinki and probably the best in Finland. But that is not saying much :) You can see the whole collection in an hour.

These lovely galleries housed many of the fine works that one can see only by visiting Finland. Especially loved the portraits. This place was perfect for contemplative visits with little to interfere with real art appreciation.

The first exhibit that will amaze you is the building it self. A massive, beautiful landmark and meeting point for the locals. Inside, the museum has the finest collection of Finnish paintings by the most famous local painters, as well as some other minor works by globally recognized painters like Van Gogh. The museum has a lot of room dedicated... More

A really good museum with interesting shows. I saw an Alice Neel retrospective and when I told friends back home they were jealous. It is a must-see for Finish art, excellent. I believe that in order to get a feel for a country, it is important to experience its art. Finland is a new country in terms of its independence... More

We enjoyed the visit. The museum is organised according to different time periods showing the old to modern periods in Finnish art.

At the time of my visit (October 2015), most of the museum was closed for renovation. However, a couple of rooms on the ground floor were kept open for visitors so they could get a glimpse at some of the paintings. The museum is conveniently located just opposite Helsinki's central railway station. Free entry for Helsinki card holders!

We had time only to see the works of Alice Neel and found the exhibition to be extraordinarily well done with translations into three languages, displays laid out based on the time in her life and ending with a bio and a set of frames where one could attempt to produce a portrait. Some six dozen of Neel's works were... More

Interesting exhibitions and a good selection of best and most loved Finnish art around 1900. Not too big, nice museum shop, cafe is a bit too plain.

This was an interesting visit as we had not had an opportunity to see many Finnish paintings . The galleries were thoughtfully laid out with explanations in Finnish ,Swedish and English . Best of all , and something I had not seen before ,there was a 'selfie' section were there were all the self portraits of the artists whose work... More
