If you appreciate art you will like Ateneum. The works of the American artist Alice Neel were on display as well as traditional art and sculpture.

Well, I wasn't ready to be so taken and absorbed by an exhibition of modern art. But this showing of 72 pictures by American artist Alice Neel blew me away. She had a sad life - three husbands, lost her first child, estranged from her second, finally died of cancer. But she met fascinating people, stood up for her values,... More

Ateneum is a legendary museum and has great changing exhibitions as well. Beautiful architecture and kind staff. Really good value for the money.

I try to visit the local art gallery in every city I visit. This was a little different in that it covers mostly Finnish artists, but it also has some great masters. While I'm no expert, there are certainly some works that I would have liked to take home. I enjoyed my time at this gallery and would recommend it... More

The museum is very nice, and I especially like the café for watching the ice skaters in winter. With permanent dusk and sunset it is lovely to have a coffee and write postcards.

There are only 3 floors including one current exhibit of Alice Neel. Very good spacing and logical. If you like paintings of late 19th n early 20th century, that's the place for you. And many portraits, as well as landscape ones. Wonderful and there were not many people visiting so I can enjoy with peace

Lovely museum in downtown Helsinki opposite the beautiful railway station. Apart from 19th and 20th Century art there are frequent excellent special exhibitions.

This is worth a visit for the architectural inventiveness of the internal design. It also has a very well displayed and explained collection of Finnish art - this was new to me and I really enjoyed being introduced to its very characteristic themes and style.

Conveniently located opposite the main railway station and near one of the great Helsinki city bike docking stations. Very friendly welcome. Easy to use lockers for stashing bags and coats so that you can enjoy a hands free stroll. Photography allowed without a flash. I started with the Alice Neel exhibition on the top floor. There are captions in English... More

This is one of the better museums on the Baltic. Helsinki is a busy bustling modern city. It can be a lot of fun just to walk around. There is a long outdoor market mostly for a wide variety of ethnic foods strewn the length of the downtown area. A few streets over you will find the national gallery which... More
