This theater in a stunning granite building is known for high-quality but serious plays. No musicals here. They are played at Helsinki City Theatre.

My partner got a gift certificate for this theater and we chose the play Ensimmäinen tasavalta (First Republic). It is a play about President KJ Ståhlberg and the fight for Finnish democracy. It was a good rehearsal of school history lessons and also we found out many new things.

The stage had been extended over the front rows of the stall. We were sitting on the first row of the 2nd balcony and the visibility was somewhat blocked. I noticed that many seats were blocked away because of this. The second row and side rows on the 2nd balcony were not in use. Luckily half of the play was projected to the screens located higher. These we were able to see.

The actors were real professionals as their expressions were magnified on these screens and there were no retakes, as usual shooting a movie.

We saw this striking building from the Central Train Station. This building is enhanced by the statue of the Finnish national romantic writer Aleksis Kivi in front of it. There are 4 permanent stages - Main stage, Small stage, Willensauna stage, Omapohja stage. It is the oldest Finnish speaking professional theatre in Finland.

The history of Finnish theatre art is present in this building. I have personal memories of this building from my childhood days. I saw so many beloved actors and actresses here, so many wonderful plays.

The Finnish National Theatre is a suitably ornate early 20th Century building that sits adjacent to the railway station in the centre of town. I am told there are a variety of different performances to suit varied tastes but did not have the chance to partake.

The iconic Art Nouveau building has stood by the square from 1902 beside the railway station of the same period. Generations of Finnish thespian families have performed here keeping the standards high. The repertoire consists of modern plays written by national authors combined with classics like Dostojevsky. This spring there are two new adaptations from popular books, "My cat Yugoslavia" written in Finnish by immigrant Pajtim Statovci and childrens play "The history of Finland according to Doghill" from beloved cartoon author Mauri Kunnas.

It has an exquisitely beautiful and captivating facade. Opened in the early 1900s it is in the style of National Romanticism.

Located prominently in the central city adjacent to the main station and across from the Ateneum, Finnish granite is the main material of the exterior.

The amount of decorative variety and detail in the stonework is enchanting.

I have been here many times and they always have interesting plays; Finnish new drama, but also adopted translations of foreign plays. The Finnish National Theatre (Finnish: Suomen Kansallisteatteri), established in 1872, is a theatre located in central Helsinki on the northern side of the Helsinki Central Railway Station Square. The Finnish National Theatre is the oldest Finnish speaking professional theatre in Finland. It was known as the Finnish Theatre until 1902, when it was renamed the Finnish National Theatre.

Not far from the railway station in the square nearby is this photogenic theatre building. A must see if you like to see architecture. Unfortunately didn't get to see inside.
