The performance based on the Gothic novella from 1886 by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson was excellent, absolutely 5 stars.

This stunning choreography by an American ballet dancer and international choreographer Val Caniparoli had its world premiere at the Finnish National Ballet in 2020. This spring the classic story returned and we bought tickets.

However, the afternoon coffee which we had before the performance was not so good. Most of the items had no taste and probably some of them were out of date. For example, the scones were very dry and crumbly.

This time we had seats on the left side and it was a mistake. The toilet facilities on the left side are very insufficient compared to the right side.

We attended a Saturday night performance of The Magic Flute. First let me say that the building was magnificent, both inside and out. We ordered tickets over the phone and got the ‘pensioner’ price. Wow! We were told that they were the last 2 tickets and since the house was totally full, I can believe it. Opera seems to be alive and well in Finland. This version of The Magic Flute was different from what we expected and we absolutely loved it. The only disappointment was that we didn’t know you should order food before the performance and there wasn’t much available when we went during intermission. Otherwise, an excellent excursion.

We have visited many times at this 1993-built new Helsinki Opera House by the Töölönlahti bay.

Usually, the productions have been of high quality and visually stunning. So was this Salome opera by Richard Strauss also.

The one-act opera was very intensive from the start to the finish.

I was in business in Helsinki and went to see the Phantom of the Opera. The building is magnificent and spacious. I understand that you can book dinner prior to the events too.

We saw two performances in less than two weeks. We sat in the 5th and 7th rows of the stall. If you are lucky to have a short person sitting in front of you, you have a good view. Otherwise not. I had in Tosca but not in Spartacus.

The director of Tosca had done a great job. Although it was probably my 10th Tosca, I could find many new things. The singers were also great.

The stage setup was more stunning in Spartacus. The dancers were top-notch.

The intermission service would need some improvement. We had made online reservations beforehand and all our three tables were located very far away on the other side where we sat during the performance. Why don't they ask where you sit and at least try to give a table nearer? This would minimize the traffic during the intermission.

Now it felt a little bit silly that they control the traffic out of the auditorium but in the foyer, there is complete chaos when people are trying to find their tables.

Finland has a uniquely high concentration of exceptional musicians and the opera house (Oopperatalo) which houses the Finnish National Opera and Ballet is a fitting place to represent that heritage. It is a beautifully designed venue, both inside and out, with well organised hospitality and service and of course an amazing auditorium hosting many many high quality concerts. Our latest visit was to Avec Patrick which showcased the talent of the FNOB orchestra and choir.

I was pleased to see a ballet performance there. It was exciting to see the National Ballet at its best. The place itself is amazingly beautiful. I highly recommend taking in a show if your visit can include it.

Always wanted to see AIDA, took my chance and booked up on an earlier visit to Helsinki. Was not disappointed. To start with, wonderful interior bar area to roam in before performance, despite - full house – did not fill overcrowded. And come the interval queuing for drinks very easy and fast – you can order drinks/table when booking tickets. paid 70 Euro for excellent seat 16 rows back in the middle.
The 3 hour+ performance of AIDA was superb, the overhead translator was in English/Finnish/Swedish, very clear and easy to read.
Tips - get onto their web site list to book early; this place is very popular. Use local transport, so easy trams to the door, just two stops from central station. Why go to London, take a city break flight / hotel still cheaper.

We visited Helsinki for the first time to see the Opera Thais , by Massenet . This is a really good theatre inside, good seating . Food / snacks are available and there are a couple of bars here . The opera was outstanding , clearly an excellent company , top flight singers, with a really terrific orchestra to complete the show . It’s easy to access by tram , good disabled access, and there’s a great little restaurant directly opposite called, I think, the Carelia . Do try to see a show if you’re in town .

The Operahouse from outside is ugly, understandable if the architectural competition was in 1970-th. Very nice nordic style interior, maybe the furniture liked too cheap for operahouse. Really logic lines for service, you can preorder easy and plenty of time for relaxing in break and space for talking about emotions. Thais is unique opera, played not very often, sad story and very famous violin solo.
