    Pleasant View
Visited the square on a sunny day. We sat at tables and had a few drinks in the outdoor bar halfway up the stairs. The area provides a good view of that part of Helsinki including the Stockholm ferry. Nice spot to watch the world go by/

    Another Beautiful Square
Located near the Market Square, I saw it while visiting the Uspenkin Cathderal. Both are located in the hilly part of Helsinki. It is a short walk on a cobblestone street. Took lots of pictures here and enjoyed the ambience.

    The Heart of Helsinki
Senate Square is the heart of Helsinki, so you'd really work to avoid coming here. But what really struck me each time I walked through was how crowd-free it was. My first stop came on a Sunday afternoon when it had been raining. There was nobody around. It was the weather, I figured. But then, every time I'd pass through the square, there were no crowds. My hotel was nearby so I walked through Senate Square a few times each day. There were never overwhelming crowds. It's a pleasant place to be. Helsinki has its fair share of tourists, no doubt. But as the face of this city, I found Senate Square to be as welcoming, calming, and enjoyable as the people who live here.

Big square at foot of Lutheran cathedral
Impressive large square at the foot of the Helsingin Tuomiokirrko (main Lutheran cathedral in Helsinki). Popular in the summer time with several food trucks and photo ops. Happened to catch a naval band marching through the square.

    Busy and Beautiful
This is of course a "do not miss" when visiting Helsinki. Not only does it have wonderful views from the cathedral, and interesting vendors in the square, you can also find the site of the first "snow church". Read the history of why Alexander II iof Russia s memorialized here.

Beautiful square surrounded by neo-classical architecture
The heart of Helsinki, surrounded by neoclassical architecture. Perhaps Finland's most popular landmark, the Helsinki Cathedral, is also located there. Especially in the summer, lots of people from different parts of the world. In terms of location, in a great place in the center of Helsinki with good transport connections. Must-visit.

Worth seeing for imposing stature and central location
I was impressed with how imposing the Cathedral was and the layout of the Square. Some stalls in the summer sold drinks and street food. Easily accessible via tram or direct walking from Helsinki Station. Overall worth seeing and central location to start / end in.

    Impressive Square
The Square is made up of very impressive buildings - Helsinki Cathedral, Government Palace, National Library of Finland and University of Helsinki. Also Sederholm house which is the oldest building in central Helsinki, built in 1757. All were designed by Carl Ludwig Engel. In the middle of Senate Square is a statue of Alexander II. It’s a great meeting place and worthy of a visit.

The liveliest square in the city
Senate square featured the Helsinki Christmas market and it is where you will find the iconic Helsinki cathedral. This square is surrounded by many of Helsinki prominent and outstanding building and also harbour front. It boast of many cafes and shops and out door food stalls. It is a cool area to hang out and enjoy the ambiance of the city. I definitely recommend.

Nice place in the center of the city
We found this place during our first trip to Helsinki. The place is kind of center of Helsinki. There are always a lot of people. You need to climb the stairs to go to the church which is nice. Also a nice photo sujet.,

It is a large square bordered by the Helsinki Cathedral, University of Helsinki, Government Palace, all built by Carl Engel, the well-known architect. The oldest building in Helsinki is also there in one of the corners and houses the national museum. In the middle is a statue of Alexander II, the Russian Czar. In the winter, it was pretty quiet, only a funfair roundabout was seen in one side of the square. You would walk though the square to get to the cathedral, so most people will see it anyway.

This historical square is a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture.

The square is surrounded by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki, and the National Library of Finland. At the moment, the University building is under renovation.

Because of the coronavirus, Helsinki City decided to rent the space for 16 restaurants and bars. It is safer to be outside than inside. There is space for 480 guests.

The idea is great but it is hard to find a vacant table if the weather is nice. So we went elsewhere to eat.

One of the main squares in the central part of Helsinki, you can find it on all tourist cards. Here you'll find a beautiful white Nicholas Cathedral, a monument to Russian Czar Alexander II and the oldest stone building in the city - the Sederholm House. A real pleasure to sit on the steps and watch touristic buses arriving there and people from different countries.

Attractive space. Dance and dramatic arts take place regularly i.e. modern dance performance was occurring on the steps of the National Cathedral two days last week. Visit the Cathedral, National Library and the two museums adjacent to the square.

Summer 2020 gives people an absolutely great way to enjoy the beautiful milieu of the market square that turned into a giant terrace in July. We went with my wife for lunch at the Muru & Pastis restaurant’s rustic salmon salad with a glass of Pinot Gris white wine. It was relaxing to enjoy the good food and scenery, as well as sunshine. Functional and good arrangements, including sanitary facilities. Hopefully this will continue in the coming summers during May - August.

I think almost every tourist will visit in this small square, as there is the most beautiful church (made by stone) in Finland. From the past history it would be interested in to know that it was Swedish King, who actually gave order to establish this town even the capital town was Turku (this happened during Finland belongs into Sweden). Contrast to that, there stood person monument of tsar Alexander, from Russia, at time Finland belongs as part of Russia (until 1917). Anyway, summer & light seasons will be best time to visit there, even longer time. Place is easy to reach by walk and publics, but not by own cars.

Senate Square was a cool first look at Helsinki. We were with a friend who grew up there and she knew the area and what to see and do. The Helsinki Cathedral has beautiful architecture but isn't overly gaudy. It is clean and well kept as are the grounds and the square. Tourists should make this a stop in their itinerary and then plan to eat at Savotta nearby where you get traditional Finnish food!

This is quite a pretty square and handily it leads to many key landmark buildings such as some of the government ministries, the main city library and of course the lovely white facade of Helsinki cathedral. Only watch out is the cobbled square is very slippery in the snow & ice, and there are LOTS of buses and trams that whizz around this square so be careful when crossing from one part to another. By no means the most glamorous of squares versus many other European cities, but lovely architecture nonetheless.
