About
Submarine Vesikko was built in 1933 in Turku and operated as a part of the Finnish navy during the wars in 1939–44. It was opened to the public as a museum after restoration work in 1973. Onboard Vesikko, the visitor can experience the crowded working and living spaces of the submariners in the midst of diesel and electric engines and torpedoes. Closed during winter.

Obviously living in Ireland we don't get to see anything like this so this was really an eye opener in imagining what it was like to live in and how submarines function in general. You would have to respect anyone that lived in such cramped quarters regardless of who they were aligned to as it must have been a huge challenge mentally.

You won't spend long in here but definitely an interesting experience for adults and children.

Cool to see an interior of a sub marine. Much tinier than you would imagine. Not a visit for a person suffering from clautsrophoby

This is a very small but well preserved submarine. Much smaller than those I served on.

It is a short visit but if you are like me an ex-submariner you will take longer to poke and peer at the boats systems and how things were done in 1933 when this boat was built.

There are some explanations in several languages to help people

She has been kept in remarkable condition, not easy for something of her age.

This is a huge rip-off.
The entry charge is 7 Euros to visit a ridiculously small submarine that takes altogether about 4 minutes to visit.
I've never felt more scammed in my life.
Better visit the submarine in the Seaplane Harbour Lennusadam museum in Tallinn, where you get the entire museum for about the same price.

Historic submarine. My Finnish husband wisely rebelled at the price, but I had visited Suomenlinna when this was closed and I was determined to see it, despite the outrageous entry fee. NOT worth it. Cramped space - as expected - with pages and pages posted for you to read if you fit and have the patience to stand in the narrow dark heat long enough. Very tiny walk from entrance to exit. Visit a submarine somewhere else!

This is a interesting piece of History. Built by the Dutch really for the German's and given/sold to the Finnish. This is with a couple of changes a German type II U boat. This was built during the prewar era when the German's were secretly building up their military. I had the honor\privilege of going through this boat at the same time a retired American submariner was going through it. The last time he has seen the boat it was beached within a Finnish military base and not open to the public. I had come to see it because of the German connection. I have now seen the type II,VII, IX and XXI German U boats that exist for tour in the world.

This submarine is a chunk of Finnish history and well worth a visit. It's small and you could really imagine how it was for the crew.

Once you enter the submarine, you'll see that the outside definitely does not reflect the amount of available space inside. Incredibly cramped and filled with all sorts of knobs and controls, you can only imagine what it must've been like having to share the space with up to 7 other people, for possibly months on end.

If you walk around Suomenlinna with the official map and follow the blue trail, you'll come across the Submarine, and it's also not hard to miss. Entry fee for an adult is 7 Euros, and 4 Euros for seniors/students. If you followed the blue trail to arrive at Submarine Vesikko and visited the Military Museum Manege (which is worth a walk round!) on your way, then you do not need to the entrance fee - you just need to show your ticket receipt before entering. The same goes for if you purchased your tickets at the submarine and work your way back to the military museum.

Well located in an exceptionally interesting area to have a look around in. Suomenlinna is a place you need at least a few hours for, maybe even the whole day. Get a 24 hour public transport ticket for 9 Euros in Helsinki, and it includes the ferry to the Island, and also entry into the sub. Some very good museums etc on the island.
