The museum contains a number of exhibits but due to time constraints we only visited the Realm Exhibition of religious art, which was well laid out and extensive. Could certainly have spent more time there looking at the other exhibits. Ceiling frescoes in the entry are also stunning.

The exhibition truly captured the ancient world of the Olmecs, maya, incas and Aztec civilisations. There were artifacts on display from the pre columbian era and the exhibition was truly diverse. There were even items from the Moche culture, made from gold that had been put on display. Truly worth a visit.
Also if you have time, visit the "Story of Finland" exhibition upstairs.

This summer, the museum is hosting Helsinki Photo Festival in their summer courtyard. The festival's winning works can be seen in the wall surrounding the courtyard park on Museokatu and Töölönkatu. They can be seen without the entry fee.

Inside the museum building, we saw a new exhibition called Ingrians – the Forgotten Finns. Both exhibitions were interesting. Also, the stunning museum building from 1910 is always worth a visit. It was designed by famous Finnish architects Gesellius, Lindgren, and Saarinen.

I really enjoyed this museum, especially given I didn't know a whole lot about Finnish history. From the Ice Age to modern Finn life, the museum provides a fascinating exploration of this beautiful country and her people. Admission is free with the Helsinki card, so if you plan to visit several museums in the city it's worth investing in the card.

I wasn't sure I had enough interest in Finnish history to stay the recommended 1.5 hours, but I ended up staying 3 hours (which included a trip to the cafe for a sandwich). Well laid out, interesting, lots of real artifacts. When you get to the room with the photos of Finlands leaders, don't scoot on by too fast. If you look at them for a few moments you'll be treated to a fun surprise.

We had 5 hours in Helsinki and this was recommended by our tour guide from a tour the day before. I love visiting and spending hours in museum. I found the design, exhibits and displays insightful, thought provoking with interactive items (e.g. video capture that overlaps your portrait on historical paintings by Finnish artists) that makes this a "must see" place in Helsink (along with the public library)

Very good exhibitions all 3 floors, but we were missing the part of WW II. Finland needs to show or tell more about the important part of what happened in 1940s. So many people in Finland lost lives and so many children missed homes. Terrible that the construction workers were in the middel of the building and the banging noises was Really Really loud and terrible. I have not experienced similiar construction work at other museums in the world. Why can’t you pay them 20% more to do this outside the opening hours?

This museum is challenged because it is situated in an old building - the curators have done a reasonable job of working within the parameters of the space. But the story of Finland could be much better - more detail about the origins of the country, more stories about the laplanders and Sami should be integrated. And if possible more interactivity would help in that section.

The National Museum is in process of repatriating many important Sami (Indigenous Finn) artifacts to the people for their own museum and study. It is a very thoughtful consideration of how times change and how to make amends for prior actions, plus the artifacts themselves are very interesting.
A great deal of history about the development of Finland as a nation, as well as on the economic collapse in the 20th c. Easily accessible by tram or on foot.

This museum presents Finnish history from the Stone Age to the present day. The museum was opened to the public in 1916.

The stunning national-romantic style building was designed by the architect company Gesellius, Lindgren, Saarinen. The appearance of the building reflects Finland's medieval churches and castles.

The ceiling of the impressive entrance hall has frescoes in the national epic Kalevala theme, painted by Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

This museum gives you always something new to explore. Besides the permanent exhibitions, there are temporary exhibitions.
