Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more.

The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

On the small side as far as zoos go, but there was only ~10 other visitors when we went, so felt like a private zoo! All the animals were outside, the Tiger cubs in particular were very active, always playing and slipping in the snow, a real treat to watch! Definitely the best zoo I've been to in terms of... More

A nice zoo, not the biggest in the world but its location on an island in touching distance of downtown Helsinki is great. I've been in the summer and the winter. Both are good but I most enjoyed in the winter in the snow when there are few people around and the animals are exploring the snow or welcoming it... More

I visited the Helsinki zoo in Mid-January. There were very few animals that were out to see, which was disappointing. The zoo, however, looked like a great place to visit in warmer weather. It is on an island and well laid out, with many animal exhibits. However, I would avoid it during the winter, if you are going to see... More

It was a surprise to find a zoo open in such cold conditions and a great experience! Getting to the zoo is simple on the #16 Bus from the central train station and takes less than 30 minutes. Entry to the zoo was 12 EUR each although there are cheaper options for families - cards are accepted. The zoo itself... More

Very easy to get to, with buses running quite frequently and dropping you off right at the gates (there was no boat because it was winter). It was a typical old-fashioned city zoo with lots of concrete and animals in smallish, cages spaces. The bit you go into first is the worst for this and has the least interesting animals,... More

The animals are a little cramped and their cages aren't as modern as in some European zoos, but still they seem relaxed and have ample hiding places. OK restaurants in the zoo, also good places to eat your own packed lunch. The island location gives the zoo a unique flavour.

Fab day to spend and easy way from the city centre. Bus takes about half an hour and you can spend hours walking around the island. Beautiful views and lovely animals of course.

It could have been because it was winter, but there was a real lack of animals. Saying that though, what we saw was interesting. It is very pretty in winter, but very quiet. You can catch the Zoo bus from the main train station in Helsinki, which was easy to do. It is about a 20 minute trip to reach... More

Korkeasaari, helsinki's zoo is a great way to spend the day with your family - or just as a couple. Located on an island just off the coast of helsinki (catch the ferry from city center during the summer season, a bus during winter), it's best enjoyed either on a summerday (it can get crowded though due to the summerholidays),...
