Sight to be seen when visiting Helsinki. Ferry travel there is lovely, a gentle and cool summer breeze on a hot day!! If you have little children, have a sturdy wheeled carriage or otherwise the cobblestone will kill your mood. Or have a carrying devise....More

This 18th century fortress is a wonderful place to visit on a sunny day. Take good shoes, pavements are uneven. No cars! Exciting places for kids to explore. Two museums to visit, restaurants for refreshment, a good place for a day out, no entrance fees,...More

Suomenlinna fortress is located on an island just off the peninsula of Helsinki. It's interesting to visit and learn about Finnish history. You can go there by boat, there is a service from the South Harbour two or three times per hour. The island is...More

If you are ever in Helsinki, make sure you take at least one boat trip to the offshore islands. I bought a day "travelcard" for 7 euros which allows you to travel by ferryboat to any of the three islands in any order you choose...More

I think we hit the jackpot, being here on a sunny day. It is only €7 return on the boat trip to the island (which is part of the fun), which makes this a cheap Helsinki excursion. All the museums on the Island are closed...More

I had a group of university students with me who loved to explore the island and the fortress. I suggest bringing snacks/lunch to picnic on a rock while there, although are nearly a dozen restaurant options to also choose from. Catch the Suomenlinna Ferry at...More

We took the HSL ferry over to the main pier (one way ticket). Went to the visitor's center to read about the fortress (free wifi and bathrooms). Followed the recommended route starting with the church with some cool detours (suggest you take detours from the...More

I spent a beautiful, sunny afternoon walking the islands of the Suomenlinna. It's a great site that provided a better understanding of Finland's complex history with Sweden and Russia, as well as Finland's Civil War.

Reached by ferry from the Market Square, itself a low-cost harbor sightseeing cruise. There is a a helpful pamphlet with a map, but the signage is so good you don't really need it. A delightful mile walk leads past fortress buildings to a spectacular view...More
