A very short and inexpensive ferry ride from Helsinki to a beautiful World Heritage site? Why, yes please! Suomenlinna was a perfect place to burn off my breakfast cinnamon roll and learn more about the history of Finland. The information center had great brochures for both the island and Helsinki in general. We took ourselves on our own walking tour... More

Since there isn't tons to do in Helsinki, why not go? We took a picnic lunch and just wandered along for hours. Even the Grandies seemed to enjoy it. Lots of families out and about on the weekend. Very clean, interesting things to check out. Lots of walking. Easy to get to, easy parking.

I went to Suomenlinna to experience the harvest festival celebrations there. While I did enjoy the performances and the historical tours that I attended, it was the island that was the star of the visit. Located a 15-20 minutes boat ride away from the main marketplace in Helsinki, the island is actually a collection of islands that houses the old... More

The Suomenlinna or the Fort of Finland is a set of 5 islands where a fort was built to keep the Russian's off. It was however captured by Russians and then handed back to Finland. Its a world heritage site and definitely worth the visit. Take you time and spend the better part of the day here. The best time... More

We were two couples to choose one of the warmest days of last summer to go for a picknick at the Fortress of Suomenlinna, and we did not regret it! After taking a few steps on the lawn and admiring the beautiful view to the blue sea, we set down and relaxed enjoying our snack and refreshments on the lawn.... More

The fortress is on an island about 20 mins ferry ride from Helsinki. The ferries are white boats with the name on the side. You CAN use both the Helsinki card and the ordinary travel card for the tickets, or there are machines at the waiting room. We were here in November and the fortress is a bleak and cold... More

My visit to this place was on Dec 2014. And fortunately it was a bright sunny day but still the temperature was hovering around 0 degrees. And along with the wind it was fiercely cold. As we had the Travel card for the month it was free for us to ride the boat. But for others they need to get... More

The trip over was really nice if a little cold - its a fascinating place and a trip to the museum which is free with the Helsinki Card as is the trip gives a real insight into the history of place plus there are stunning pictures of the Island and the frozen Baltic. I think a spring or summer visit... More

Please notice that the boat trip to Suomenlinna is low cost (about 3e to one direction , one day cityticket is available) but museums have all their own entrance fees. Much to see if you have time and you are in good condition to WALK :)

A short, if not always comfortable depending on the temperature and the wind, ferry ride from helsinki leads to this fascinating island. One half is rugged and empty of everything but canons and fortress walls, the other full of buildings, dockyards and more civilised terrain. You can easily spend hours wandering across all the parts of the island and don't... More
