The best nature attraction in south Finland. Near by Islands (Vallisaari) opened recently have untouched nature as well, visiting both at the same day might be too much (over 10km walk).

A must when visiting Helsinki, this is a beautiful island, step back in time. The scenery is stunning, museums, cafes, wildlife. If you have a ticket for local transport the ferry is included

A very good experience if you like walking and sight seeing. You need to have time to visit and of course good weather. Beautifull place with places to eat or drink coffee, historical views and people that live on this fortress island. I walked around 18 kilometers that day but I made some rounds. You can get in a submarine... More

If you go to Helsinki, do spend half a day to visit this splendid island. You can get a 12-hour round ticket for just 5 € and enjoy a different place. The island is rather small, so you can walk around without any difficulties.

Wondered what to do with my 19 year old son in Helsinki - this proved to be the very place. We visited it on 2 afternoons, looking at only 2 of the islands at a time. The ferry is convenient and leaves Helsinki just by the market square. Great views back to Helsinki are gained from on board the ferry.... More

It was cool and windy when we took the short ferry ride to Suomenlinna but despite the weather it was fascinating and very informative to walk unrestrictedly around the island and in and out of the various heritage buildings. I can confirm that a full day can quite easily be spent on the island for those interested in Finnish, Swedish... More

A visit to Suomenlinna makes for a nice day trip (or half day trip) and is practically THE must-see attraction of Helsinki. The island (actually it is a series of islands interconnected by bridges) is just a 15 minutes' ferry ride away from Kauppatori. Ferries are more frequently during the summer months, but there is at least one ferry every... More

A visit to Fortress of Suomenlinna is a must. The ferry only costs 5€, and is a lovely way to see more of Helsinki. Walking around the island is easy and quite peaceful, it's also a nice break from the city. We opted to use a free map/booklet from the information office near the ferry, and found that provided plenty... More

We went to Suomenlinna expecting to stay for a couple of hours, have a wander around and head back to the mainland. How wrong we were! We spent a really pleasant day there, exploring the myriad of museums, architecture and history there. They even have their own beer! A definite must see for anyone visiting Helsinki, but I would box... More

From Helsinki Wharf (the centre of Helsinki) it's a quick 10 minute boat ride that leaves every 20 minutes. The Island is great to walk around, see the history of Helsinki and Finland in general. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beaches or grass as you look out into the Baltic Sea, Family friendly and a place that you could... More
