I took the public ferry from Market square to the island in the afternoon, the round trip is €5 but it is free with the Helsinki Card. To follow the route on the map from top to bottom it is 1.6km but it doesn't even feel like that because there is so much to see. Plenty of museums and cafe... More

The sea fortress is located on a umber of small islands and if you like these kind of places worth the trip.Well preserved works from the Swedish and Russian period, great views of the islands and of the city, places to eat when you are there and wonderful walking trails. First fortress I have seen with gardens and ponds and... More

Suomenlinna's story is important in Helsinki's history, and you can see what was life then at the fortress, there are many small museums and a submarine as well, you can see the Helsinki harbor and there are places where you can catch a little sun and even swim.

A lovely boat ride just 15 min from Helsinki. Guided tours are also available in most languages and well worth €11 each. Places of interest including a little secluded beach. Parks to have your picnic. A great family outdoor adventure. Bicycle hire & more.

We went as our Helsinki card included travel and the majority of exhibitions/ attractions on the island. We went on a walking tour which was great! I'd recommend going on a tour as it's much better to get the whole story from someone rather than piecing it together yourself. We found it okay because everything was included within the card... We really enjoyed our full day tour, we were part of a special convention, and so we were able to enjoy a very special lunch in one of the old buildings, and of course a local tour guide, but I really think everyone would enjoy their visit here. There is an interesting video worth watching in one of the shops/museum.... More

Visited with group of ten people. Enjoyed the ferry trip but seem to have to pay extra to enter areas with information. Having visited the castle in Turku yesterday this is not as good value to me.

This fortress has different names in Finnish and in Swedish :-) In Finnish it is called "Finnsish fortress" and in swedish "Swedish fortress". That says some of the history of the fortress... You reach the fortress easily by boat, severel company will take you there. For the best experience join one of the 1 hour guided tours.

Go to Market Square and buy a ferry ticket (the booth is near the ferris wheel). Grab a map and off you go. There are 5 recommended sights, and we did them all. It was so interesting. We also went to the museum to watch the 25 minute movie on the history behind the place. You wear headphones and pick... More
