Great way to spend a nice afternoon (not so great if weather is bad)

A great place to enjoy a nice day. The island is very pretty with, of course, views all around of the harbor or sea. Many tour options (though I did not go on any) and several museums. The military museum was very small but informative. The submarine was interesting to see. The ferry is very convenient (every 20 minutes in... More

Definitely worth the trip, especially as this is a world heritage site. We went early in the morning and had a great hike before sipping on some coffee and taking photos.

An island short ferry ride from the market place. Wonderful place to wander around, admire the old fortresses, visit the museums, eat in a restaurant, have a cafe or picnic. Great place for both adults and children.

Very nice scenery and some of the best views in Helsinki. You can get there by ferry from the Helsinki city centre. Ferry prices are quite modest and no entry fee to the place. Take your own Piknik basket with you on a beautiful day and you will not be disappointed.

This fortress is the perfect visit for a sunny or at least not rainy day. There is no entrance fee (except for the boat taking you there), and it has an enjoyable two-hour walk with good views. There is also an old submarine set up as a museum which costs around 5€ and is also worth the visit, although it... More

I had expected restoration as much of the fortress had been either destroyed or allowed to decay. What I didn't expect in a UNESCO site was to find so many of the buildings have been reconstructed not as they were but as housing. The exteriors in some cases were designed to appear as they had been but internally it was... More

Reached by a short ferry boat trip (15 to 20 minutes), the island is quite large but can be walked around in 2 or 3 hours. Interesting buildings and seaside walks. One tip - The queues for the return ferries can be very long at peak times (late afternoon) so you may not get on the first boat that you... More

When I was a student in Helsinki I very often used to take a ferry to Suomenlinna and spend hours there. The ferry takes only 10 minutes to get there and you can continue on foot walking around the islands and the walls. There you can find many interesting spots, tunnels plus a beautiful seaview of course. There is a... More

Lots to see and do around Sveaborg (Swedish Castle in the other official language of Finland). Easy to get to from the market square ferries all year round.

Amazing place to spend a day, you can get the ferry on the Market Square and after 20 mins arrive at the island where the fortress is located. From the pier, you can chose what to do: museum, beaches, picnic spots, fortress walls, jogging, historical tour, etc, you can chose what to do, really nice
