- Nellita LProvince of La Spezia, Italy816 contributionsCold but….Open-air market in front of the ferry terminal for Suomenlinna island. Cold day, so not many stalls, but all the managers were very kind. Sale of local products such as Kuksa cups, various souvenirs, handicrafts. Possibility to have lunch in the refreshment stalls. We had lunch inside the Kauppatori market: a delicious reindeer soup, then desserts. Very nice market, mainly selling foodstuffs from reindeer salami to salmon desserts. Absolutely worth visitingVisited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 5, 2024
- Barbs25Staffordshire, United Kingdom3,952 contributionsNice marketsBest choice was on Saturday when there seemed to be more stalls. Unlike most places they're not full of rubbish but nice homemade gifts. Everything from magnets to fur hat/ gloves, wooden items, knitted clothes, glassware. Nice place to wander for a while. Also some food stalls which seem to be there most days.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 2, 2024
- OldjackGreater Melbourne, Australia29,387 contributionsOpen Air Market By The BalticKauppatori sists at the eastern end of the Esplanade and borders the Baltic Sea and on the visits to Helsinki there is usually an open air market with frozen people in yellow tents selling various local produce to a few frozen customers. on a warm sunny day it can be more pleasant but most of the time rug up for the cold. It is also an interesting port area and definitely worthy of a visit.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 28, 2024
- B KGurugram (Gurgaon), India186 contributionsVibrant place with shops selling food , fruits , souviniers, handicrafts. This market square has a vibrant atmosphere during the day time. It has many temporary stalls lined up that sell food items, fruits , souveniers, handicrafts, magnets etc. It is also the place from where ferries to Soumenlinna leave. The Old Market Hall is also located around here. Its fun to just hang around, stroll through the shops and and buy stuff. Plus you get some nice views too. Its a walking distance of 5-10 minutes from the senate square.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 1, 2024

There are fish restaurants just right for lunch, tourist souvenir shops and private hobby shops. Even if the museum, Marimekko and general stores are all on holiday, you can still enjoy it.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 5, 2024
- TimbledeebobsNorth Yorkshire, United Kingdom80 contributionsQuaint, busy, expensiveLoads of stalls- fresh fruit & veg, trinkets and souvenirs, food stalls. Food stalls are expensive, food is OK- if you think c.20€ for over-cooked mediocre food is value, I apologise for offending you. If you don’t- have your wits about you and pay in CASH. Food stalls at Kauppatori are expensive and charge you a card transaction fee which may not align with Findiconompetition/ Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority guidance. Buyer Beware!! Go for the cheaper dishes from the stalls, OR, walk c.300m to the Vanha Kauppahalli historic market; food still €€€ but served indoors, in a quaint and clean environment. Lots of choice.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 5, 2024

You can find here a lot of stalls with food, souvenirs, fruits and vegetables, handmade gifts and handicrafts etc. The prices are not low at all but there is good stuff. The food is very tasty too, even is quite uncomfortable to eat in those tents especially when is very crowded.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 29, 2024
- Oliver LHelsinki, Finland4 contributionsBest place to get to VallisaariBest thing about Kauppatori is that the harbor has boat that takes you to Vallisaari. Helsinki citycenter and especially kauppatori is hustling and busting and noisy. Comparing to other cities nothing so special. Taking the boat to the Helsinki Archipelago is where you get to see the most beautiful parts of Finland. Especially Vallisaari comparing to Suomenlinna which is super crowded always.Visited September 2024Traveled on businessWritten September 11, 2024

If you go to the Kauppatori (Outside Market) at this time of year you will find that it is The annual Herring Market. Always held during the first full week in October, the market has been happening just about every year since 1743. I decided to go and have a look this year as it is usually a wonderful atmosphere. Of course this year was slightly different because of the pandemic. Usually lots of little fishing boats are set out along the harbour, selling all flavours of spiced herrings. This year I counted only about 10 fishing boats all clustered at one end of the harbour and this year they did not allow customers to taste the herring before buying. But non the less the atmosphere was although less crowded, very much the same as in past years. The herrings are sold in little plastic tubs weighing about 250 grms, of which the fish content is about 150 grms. The price is usually this year about 8 euros (A bit expensive I think), although they do reductions if you buy 3 tubs, the cheapest I found was 5 euros per tub. They sell all kinds of flavours from garlic herrings to the usual "Glassmaker's herring" to Mustard, onion or dill herrings, I have seen Brandy herring and even coffee spiced herring in the past but this year the flavours seemed quite conservative. There is always a competition to find the best herring between the different sellers or the newest taste. Also you can find sweet Archipelago breads and other spiced preserves. The normal market is always worth a visit at any time of year, well except for winter when there can only be 2 or 3 tents set up in the coldest of weather. Now they were selling all kinds of Autumn products from Sea Blackthorn juice to apples and mushrooms. All in all a nice visit.

Helsinki's Market Square in the morning was very spacious, a couple joggers and tourists here and there. There was a lot of cafe tents and all of them were very quiet so you could be in peace. I recommend to visit the Market Square, if you don't mind the smell of sea and fish! The prices were quite high in one tent, but probably cheaper in some others.

We visited the Market Square in the morning before ten, when there was plenty of space in the cafes. The prices are quite high like you can expect. You can also find different kinds of crafts targeted for tourists etc. There’s also great ship connections to the Korkeasaari Zoo and Suomenlinna for example.

While on a Baltic cruise, we stopped at Helsinki and boarded a 4 Stop Shuttle organised by the cruise line. The 1st stop from the pier was the market square (Kauppatori) where there were lots of stalls with fresh produce. Being autumn, we enjoyed the freshest berries. We opted for the wild blueberries instead of the farm grown and they were just awesome. There were lots of souvenirs available and also Scandinavian designed art. Recommend highly.

Kauppatori is worthy of a visit even if you live in Helsinki - offering some of the best berries and fruit and vegetables (in season) and souvenirs all year round, as well as more traditional Finnish fast food stalls. It's also convenient to the Suomenlinna ferry if you're visiting or showing visitors around. However one warning - watch out of the diabolical seagulls. They are not only freakishly huge - they are skilled at relieving visitors of their food if not careful!

This is the famous Market Square. A fairly large square, facing the waterfront, filled with stalls of all sorts of produce. You can get curios, clothing, food, etc...etc.. It is also a great place for a meal, especially for sea-food. We were in Helsinki for nearly a week, and we had five or six meals here. The President's palace faces the square. From the square, many famous landmarks are just a short walk: the Senate Square, the Lutheran Cathedral, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, Esplanade Park, Havis Amanda statue. Easily accessible by trams. Even if you are not in the mood to buy anything, this is a wonderful place to sit down and do some serious people-watching! If you are in Helsinki even for just a day, you should spend a little time here!

We came here on a Saturday morning and there were about a dozen stalls selling local souvenirs and products. Good range of goodies and most of them are typical of Finland. Lovely views of the old city hall buildings, the Ferris wheel and the Harbour side.

Had an amazing time in Helsinski, Finland. Ate at the closed market - food is wonderful in Finland especially since I love seafood. I especially loved the Kauppatori market with all the homemade items. Bought some exceptional souvenirs there that were all handmade. Will be visiting again hopefully in the future.

Excellent alternative to local restaurants and fast food. The place where you can eat fresh food with an acceptable budget. Food is delicious especially moose meat balls with jam or salmon with potatoes. The view is nice in front of the harbor. Only thing to notice is that stands close at about 5pm.

A great location for an outdoor market and some really interesting stalls. The arts and crafts ones were really good but the food stalls were just the best. What was disappointing was that we had just had lunch before walking down here and some of the hot food stalls smelled delicious. Next time I come here, I starve myself for the day.

Is it cheaper to buy reindeer hides from Helsinki or Lapland?
Written April 6, 2018
This is the one thing I regret about my Christmas trip to Helsinki...that I did not buy a reindeer hide. I can't compare prices between Helsinki and Lapland but I can tell you that prices are definitely a lot cheaper in Helsinki than in the US.

I am going to stay in Helsinki in the evening 7:00pm on 24/12/2017 to morning 10:00am on 25/12/2017
May I know if there is any big market / Christmas market open till late on 24/12 or in the morning in 25/12? I am so keen to go to the outdoor kauppatori market and the Christmas market in the town.
Thanks a lot

Unfortunately most of Helsinki is closed, except hotels and some restaurants. Take a walk around city and admire Xmas lights and visit those few restaurants for hot drinks.

Hi, i plan to visit on Sunday 25th June 2017. I read on its website during summer Sundays would open from 10 - 5pm. Are all shops going to open just like weekdays? or perhaps some are closed and converted into carparks? what about the old market hall/vanhakauppalli next door? is it open too?
Written June 3, 2017
I expect Market Square shopkeepers try to keep their shops open also on Sundays (from 10 to 17) over the summer, as they know there are a lot of potential customers around.
The nearby Old Market Hall (Vanha Kauppahalli) is open also on Sundays (from 10-16) over the summer.

Hi!! Is Kauppatori open during Easter? Im planning to spend few days 13th April til 17th April in Helsinki :).

I've asked my Finnish connection - and the answer is yes - in fact it is open most of the year - but the number of booths and opening hours can be variable. Enjoy your visit!

Is it open on Jan 8th 2017 (Sunday)? If so, what are the hours? Will there be many stalls? Worth a visit?
Written November 18, 2016
I don't think there will be anything worthwhile on a Sunday in January. If any stalls at all - not many - often converted to parking space. Furthermore it can be bitterly cold - in fact there are not many outside sights worthwhile when it's winter - aside of skating or cross-country skiing.
