For tourists looking for public transport to a national park, I recommend this (even though people would say there are more dense forests in Finland). The walks are very peaceful and scenic and the lakes looked oddly picturesque despite being frozen over. You can see various birds and animals on paths to Haukkalampi and Kattila - though the Haukkalampi trail is popular for tourists so I advise getting there early.

We went there by bus (245A) on a sunny day in late September for a hiking trip. We started in Kattila and followed the trail to Haltia (about 9 km). The trail was clearly marked. The scenery was absolutely stunning - the forest all dressed in fall colors and lakes with crystal clear water. Don't forget to bring a bag for your trash, as there are no trash bins to be found.

Pretty seclusive forest park close by to Espoo.
Easy to reach by public transportation, for example, train+bus from Helsinki centre. You can be a part of the guided group, but you can make it also by yourself as the walking paths are marked well, and you don't need any special skills to make the journey.
There are a couple of small lakes-ponds which you can investigate by the hiring a boat and also swim in the bigger lake Siikajärvi.
In the summertime, you might have a chance to collect some forest berries, Nam!
There are fewer people at working days.Â

Mixed feelings on this one from me. Coming to this national park was one of my 'to do's' as I had such limited time in Helsinki.
I read a lot of the reviews prior to coming here (big thanks to those who submitted reviews with directions on how to get here by public transport - it was a big help and I used it as my guide).
It takes about an hour and a half to get here by public transport from Helsinki - a train, and then a bus. You can either get off at the Centre or go further up.
The trails were well marked yes, but what I researched and what I saw on the tracks were different in my mind, maybe I didn't spend enough time figuring it out, but I was on a time limit and just wanted to walk, so I did rush a bit.
Because of the weather and lack of snow, the track was really slippery, so I suggest to make sure you are well equipped (the right shoes are super important).
Also, no problems doing it solo, but for me, I wouldn't recommend, I did get a bit lost at the end but there were people around to ask (I went on a Sunday so there were people around). The trails are marked, but I highly recommend doing it as part of a tour as I think it would make it more enjoyable.
Also you have to wait for the bus to get back to the train station, and I think I waited 40 mins, and then stood for the whole bus ride back, but again, I did go on a weekend.
Unfortunately, as this trip was last minute, there were no guided tours available, which is why I did it solo, but I think if I was to do it again, I would def join a group.
The national park is pretty, and worth visiting, but just make sure you are prepared for it.

This is the place where people from Espoo and Helsinki go hiking and relaxing in the nature. Hardly any capital has such nature treasure so close. Beautiful lakes for swimming or canoeing or fishing, forests, hiking, camping, picking wild berries or mushrooms. One of my favourite places in all Finland. Sometimes Haltia area can get a bit crowded but there are many areas where there are never too many people like Kattila which also can be reached by bus. Highly recommended for all nature lovers who don’t want to travel far from Helsinki area.

Nature there is beautiful, there are plenty of marked and taken care of trails and, best of all, is rather easily accessible by public transport! (although it might be a bit long to reach, reserve about 1h40mins per way from the central railway station in Helsinki). Nevertheless, it is totally worth visiting and spending as long as possible there. There is a skiing court as well, but did not have the chance to try it out..yet.

Nuuksio is a great park suitable as for families with kids (short routes from 2 km) and for people without kids (routes up to 8 km). Nature is beautiful as everywhere in Finland.
There are also some open places for grill but keep in mind that they are usually occupied within popular hours so take a sandwich just in case :)

Easy to reach forest park from Espoo. Lovely walking trails, plenty to see and do. Beautiful lake with grills which we took advantage of. Beautifully maintained and very clean. Lots of room so we didn't felt as it was crowded. Would be amazing with the snow in the winter season.

Amazing Hiking Experience of Finland’s top nature attractions at Nuuksio National Park, Espoo.
Information and map of the forest trail is available at Haltia, the Finnish Nature Centre.
We walked through the wilderness of the marked; tree lined forest trail. This was a long authentic marked trails with up and downhill on the ancient cliffs covered by mosses and lichens with beautiful scenic views of this nature park.
It took us about 5 hours to complete at a comfortable pace.
An unforgettable experience of a lifetime!

Nuuksio is accessible by public transportation from Helsinki.
From the Helsinki train station, take the train to Espoo. Look for a train going to Kirkkonummi (aka Kyrkslatt). They leave about 1x-2x every hour. For some reason, no one wants to sell you a ticket at the station, they all tell you to buy the ticket on the train. You have to get into a train car that sells tickets (they're pretty well marked on the outside). Other trains also stop at Espoo, but they don't seem to be as frequent.
Once at Espoo, get out of the station at the side opposite the mall (with a bridge). The 85 (or 85a) bus stops right there. The ride to Nuuksio takes about 20 minutes. Get off at the (second to last?) stop with a sign that points to Haukkalalampi. From there, it's a 1.8 km, 20-30 minute walk into the park. The bus runs about 2x an hour.
Nuuksio is a pretty little lake area, not a huge national park by any means. In September, it was very quiet. There are some nice views, and there were a zillion mushrooms all over. The leaves were beginning to turn colors, and it's probably amazing when foliage is in full bloom. There are 3 major loop trails in the park.
outdoors.fi has some good maps / info on this place. There's a little gift shop, but there's no real food here so bring some snacks.

Hello! I am visiting Helsinki in July 2025. Are you able to see the reindeer at this time? If so, how can you see them in the park?

We would like to hire a car from Helsinki airport for our 6 days trip . We are staying at Holiday Resort Ellivuori . Is it a good idea to rent a car from Helsinki and keep it through out our trip ? Or would you advice that we drive to Ellivuori and leave the car there ? And hire separately to return to Helsinki?
How much would a car hire cost per day ? We are 4 adults and two of us have international driving license . Age 25 to 55

HI, is it any tour arrangement for mushroom picking on Autumn?
Written March 18, 2019
Hi! To have an arranged mushroom picking event I think you could ask from the Haltia center in Nuuksio, or then the Espoon martat association.
If they can't help you then you should get in contact with some local people who are into mushroom picking. :)

We are going to be there in Helsinki for 5 days. We would like to visit Nuuksio National Park park and see if we can experience reindeer sledding an ice fishing. Could you please advise how to get there using public transport? Can we do the trip on our own?
Thanks in advance.
Written December 3, 2018
My advice for you would be to stay in contact with the Nuuksio National Park staff (see link below) either by email or telephone.
The most convenient is to take a cab, but there is also public transportation as you can see from the web site. In the park there are many routes and lakes, possibly also a chance for ice-fishing, depending on whether conditions. Probably you cannot see any reindeer, which are common some 1000 kilometer north, in Lapland. For a hiking or skiing tour in the park it may be good to reserve a guide, pending on your orienteering skills. Good luck!

How to go to Nuuksio National Park from Helsinki in January?
Written December 3, 2018
Hello!
I suggest you use HSL (Helsingin Seudun Liikenne = Helsinki Area Traffic) web page search -lcannot add links here so just look for HSL- or download the app to your phone and do the same. I really recommend using the app (HSL in Play store) as you can get the directions and tickets for all the Helsinki area public transportation all in one package! The app even tells you which ticket you should pay for your selected transport.
When I used the search the result is (at this time of the day) E train to Espoo center and from there the bus number 245 to Nuuksio.
Hope this helps!

Hi, can we have a longer walk, like 20 km on next wednesday?
Written April 7, 2018
Hi!
Yes, Nuuksio is pretty much always open and you can choose from the trails based on distance.
I will comment and say that at this point in time, there is still much snow and at the same time it's warming up now so it will be quite muddy and slippery. Please keep that in mind and be safe.
Kind regards,
Dave

Hi, We will be visiting Finland in July and would like to see reindeers. Would we be able to do so on our own or do we need to join an organised tour? We will have use of a car and would like to continue our journey towards Turku from the National Park, which is the nearest town to it?
Many thanks
Margie
Written April 8, 2017
Hi,
Turku is in south Finland. You have to go up to North/Lapland to see reindeer. It´s a long way, but definitely worth it if you have enough time. In Lapland there are guided/organized tours - for example for northern lights, husky sledging, reindeer sledging... Pretty often you can see reindeers freely chilling by the road, but there are also reindeer farms.
Finland is truly beautiful!
Enjoy!
