An activity not to miss, when in Göteborg is a walk from the Kungsportsplatsen down the Avenyn towards the Götaplatsen, a square, which can be considered the city's cultural hub just as the Gustav Adolf Torg is its administrative centre. Only created in 1923 for the 300 years jubilee of Göteborgs foundation, the square is surrounded from left to right by the City Library (Stadsbibliotek), the City Theatre (Stadsteatern), the Museum of Art (Konstmuseum), the Göteborg Art Gallery (Konsthall) and the City Concert Hall (Konserthus).
The first buildings to stand at the square were the Museum of Art and the Art Gallery. The Theatre and the Concert Hall were added in the 1930's, the Libary in the 1960's. Since they are all different in style, the square lacks a certain harmony.
The most conspicuous sight though at the square is the large Poseidon Fountain, also from the 1930's, by well known Swedish sculptor Carl Milles, who had changed his name from Andersson, when living in Paris. In a corner of the square, by the 'Konsthall' is a life size statue of Victor Hasselblad, famous for the camera, that bears his name. By the Museum of Art is now also a 'Hasselblad Center' with temporary photo exhibitions.

Public plaza at the southern end of Avenyn, the city's main boulevard. The square was inaugurated within the framework of the Gothenburg Commemorative Exhibition (1923), which commemorated the 300th anniversary of the city. It is the cultural center of Gothenburg, bordered by the Gothenburg Concert Hall (where the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is based), the Gothenburg Art Museum, the Gothenburg City Theater and the City Library. In the center of the square presiding over it is the statue of Poseidon, a work made by Carl Milles that has become one of the symbols of the city.

We stumbled on this historic public square as a result of following a main avenues (Avenyn) on the way to Haga. Surrounded by interesting buildings and has a lovely statue. The walk along Avenyn is equally interesting and impressive.

From downtown walk a few blocks up Kungssportsavenyen and you come to Gotaplatsen Square. This is a great square with a giant statue of Poseidon. It is one of the most famous landmarks of Gothenburg. This is also the location of the Art Museum, Concert Hall and City Theatre. While it is beautiful during the day we were told it is even better at night with the statue and fountains illuminated. Sadly we had to get back to our ship.

Göteborg, initially, confused me as to where it’s city centre truly is. For me, it’s a large city spanning a good deal of space with no direct centre and numerous small hubs and collections of shops and restaurants throughout. However, upon finding Gotaplatsen, this felt more where all the action can be found. The long boulevard type street with a museum atop some steps and grand Poseidon statue is a hive for people to eat, drink and shop. There are two great water features and lots going on. Be sure to visit this area of Göteborg.

I found this attraction on my way to the museum. On the bus I was told it is the statue of Poseidon. It’s big, attractive and fitting to guard the museum.
