Ferry ride is lovely and not too long, but check before going what time the English reenactment will be presented. We arrived on the first boat of the day and spent 2 hours, way more than enough time, exploring, beach combing, climbing, playing pirate and then lunching(nice cafe) and visiting the site's gift shop (handcrafts that have little to do with the site),before finally going for the reenactment in English for <30 mins. and the ferry back to the city. The reenactment is fun and participatory, but we would have come later in the day if we knew the wait would be that long.

I'm local and I was there 4-5 times as host for different guests I had so far. This time I had a guest from Canada and the tour itself was funny and interesting but it was only in Swedish which made whole tour very, very boring. I talked with the actors after the show and I told them to improve that in the future....and that would be pretty easy since Swedes talk English very well.

We arrived at Alvsborg Fortress via a 25 minute ferry ride which we caught at Lilla Bommen. On arrival we were greeted by a male actor "The Commander" in period clothing and although he spoke mostly in Swedish we had a written transcript of the dialogue to follow. The next 1/2 hour or so the period play unfolded with the female actress playing her comical parts and the crowd was taken to key sites along the fortress buildings. Afterwards we had free time to explore the fortress at our leisure which was fun to do & both my children [10yo & 20 yo] enjoyed seeing the various stone buildings, the ramparts and the village shop [which was also a restaurant]. The deep well and board walk was good to view. The pretty vista across the bay was lovely on our sunny summers' day but it's also quite windy. We stayed 1 1/2 hours and covered a lot of the fortress in that time as it is compact in size and not all the buildings were open to the public. We then caught the return ferry back to Helsinki.

Went out with children and grandchildren for a nice day at Älvsborg fortress. We checked up before they had lunch and some other options. When we went to eat there was almost nothing to eat. Two shrimp sandwiches and some cheese sandwiches that ran out before we could order. All of us (12) were supposed to have lunch but we ended up only getting ice cream and some cookies. The only staff was a newly hired guy who would serve anyone who came and wanted to eat. He did the best he could but we didn't get fuller anyway. Have emailed and called Älvsborgs fortress without answer. They promise to get in touch but don't. In addition, the website states that you may not eat packed lunch. Disaster🤢

when I saw the brochure for the boat ride and tour of Alvsborg fastning we dropped everything we planned for the day and hopped on board. The 30 min ride out to the island is guided and has some very interesting tidbits of info about Gotheburg past and present. The brochure made it appear that the fortress was a living history museum, there were two men dressed up in costume giving us some sort of story, but we weren't able to decipher exactlty what was being portrayed to us. The one character was kind of all over the place, popping in and out in different areas as different characters was really confusing and to top it off the English/swedish tour was just in Swedish and a few scattered phrases in English. The fortress offers some incredible views of the archipelago and sailboats. The tour is approx. 25 mins long. There is a cafe and gift shop on the island. Most people brought their own food and ate at one of the many areas for picnics. Buy tickets at Lilla Brommen, first boat out is 10:45am. take rain gear!!

After a 40 mins boat ride, you are greeted by a guide in costume and one other actor to tell this history of the island. Enough to see and explore for a few hours. Good to combine this with the Maratime Museum as the dock that this leave from is only a few mins walk from that museum. I ate lunch here as well and it was fine.

I can thoroughly recommend this attraction even if you are not into castles.
Approx 40 minute boat ride from the harbour Alvsborgs is located in the estuary.
You will be greeted by a tour guide, dressed in historical costume who will then act out the part of an invading Dane. The enthusiastic acting (in English and Swedish) adds greatly to the experience.
A couple of hours really well spent and if I would heartily recommend the tour to anyone visiting the region.

I would not recommend this to people who are in Gothenburg for a limited time. Although the island is enjoyable with a nice view if you turn the right way the fortress itself is not extremely impressive. Also, if you turn around the other way the view is not so nice with the heavy harbour.
There is a café which serves sandwiches and cookies.

The trip began with a thirty minute boat ride to the fortress. Information given on the boat and the dramatic presentation at the fort were not offered in English so that did not enhance my learning experience or enjoyment. I was not told this when I purchased the ticket at the office. The brochure was written in both Swedish and English. A passenger was kind enough to offer some translation which was very helpful. The fort was well preserved and you could enjoy relaxing in the sun after the tour. The children can run and play on the grounds. There were shops and a cafe on the premises. The cafe does not take credit cards so you will need kroners. I would suggest bringing a picnic lunch and blanket. There were others with these, especially
those with children. Picnic tables are located in the courtyard area. The scenic view was lovely.

Hi Rockshire!
Thank you for the review! We always try to offer the guided tour in both swedish and english, and sometimes in both languages at the same tour. We´re sorry that this was not the case when you were visiting. I´m happy that you found another passenger who could help!

The island itself has little to offer and can be easily explored in less than an hour. The only public facilities are toilets and there is no cafe.
A pair of actors did a good job in trying to bring what was a modest offering to life. The play was in Swedish but we were given a translation and they nevertheless tried to involve us. The boat was very pleasant - clean, smooth with interesting commentary. So, not a bad way to kill 3 hours but don’t make it a priority.
