An extensive art collection in the heart of Gothenburg
Even though I have visited Gothenburg pretty much annually since 1996, I don't believe I had frequented this museum before I decided to give it a visit on my last trip back in June of 2023. At least not as an adult. The art collection is massive and varied, and the paintings are exhibited on delightful backgrounds, ensuring that they truly come into their own in this museum. Additionally, the building itself is an old, historical one, which makes for a lovely premise to hold a museum as astonishing as this. Will definitely come back at a later occurrence as well. Please note that large bags aren't allowed into the museum, and you will be asked by the guards to leave them in one of the lockers in the lobby.

Large collection with a pleasant atmosphere
It is located in a nice area for sight seeing and people watching so a good place to add into your day out. There is a extensive collection of a variety of different styles of art so something to please most. It is well curated and with a nice set-up. Also while busy it never felt crowded or cramped.

    Excellent Value and Highly Recommended!
I went there to see the Hasselblad photography exhibition, which would only have taken 20mins, and saw the rest of the museum too. The Gothenburg Colourists exhibits was my favourite. The guidance was to take the lift to the 6th floor and work one's way down. This was the best way to do it. There were Monet's. Picasso's. Cezanne's too and even some Rembrandt's. The entrance fee was only 65SEK.

We passed a fascinating morning in the museum it is spacious and sorry and the exhibits are so well placed. It is easy to stand back admire and enjoy without getting fatigued by the quantity. It’s not a vast museum so perfect for a half day for teens.
There is a restaurant and lockers for your bags and coats and also a well stocked art/book shop. It’s free to teens and reasonable for adults we paid £10 for a ticket which enables us to visit 3 city museums for a year.

The art museum is around a mile on foot from Gothenburg Central station. You can also take tram 4 from Central station to the nearby Berzeliigaten stop.

The museum is laid out over six floors and understandably the art is primarily of Scandinavian origin.

I had very little knowledge of Swedish art prior to my visit, but really liked the work of Ivar Arosenius, the Gothenburg Colourists (especially Ragnar Sandberg) and 18th century sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel.

There were also several good Edvard Munch paintings on view.

There was an excellent collection of French Impressionism, with works by Monet, Camille Pissarro, Degas Cezanne and Gaugin.

I enjoyed the Picasso paintings on display as well as some of the older work by Lucas Cranach the younger.

One of the highlights of the gallery however was The Knight And The Falcon - a truly remarkable painting by Rembrandt.

There were a couple of rooms of contemporary Swedish art, but I preferred the sculpture room with work by Henry Moore, Rodin and Alexander Calder.

I liked also the room of self portraits. These were mainly by Scandinavian artists but included Kathe Kollwitz and Marc Chagall.

I spent a very enjoyable two hours browsing and the admission fee was 60 SEK.

I enjoyed the impressionist section and my kids found a few items that they liked. I thought there was a kids section or something that could capture and hold their attention, but that was not the case. Not good for kid’s and it was decent for adults.

I was visiting this art museum in Göteborg this summer. Ten minutes before the closure, the security man came, telling me that I have to go to the exit. Although I paid the ticket up to the five o'clock, he insisted and he was also a bit (if not outright) rude. Let's say abrupt. There was not much visitors and also gallery is not that big, so I would normally need no more then two, three minutes to leave the building.

But what really made me to write this complain, was that when I passed by the visitors in lower floor they could peacefully watch the pictures and nobody disturbed them. Why the security man picked on me, is unknown to me. I feel it like unnecessary maltreating and it (at least a bit) spoiled my visit in otherwise beautiful Göteborg.

It even more supprised me because this was the only such unkindness (at least to that degree) I experienced during my ten days staying in Sweden, which I must say it's nice country and also Swedes are nice and polite.

Great experience! This museum has really nice impressionists collection - Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Mark Chagall! Separate room is dedicated to Pablo Picasso, which have some of his famous works, for example "Family of acrobats with monkey". This art museum have great old European and Scandinavian masters, including Rubens. On the first and second floor you can find some modern art ! Definitely recommend to all!

Totally impressed with the collections, and the artful positioning of the master pieces. alongside the masters of old are contemporary art work well placed to inspire a sense of continuation or give a deeper sense of storytelling.

I was pleasantly surprised by lichtenstein‘s lighting bolt hidden around a set of stairs as a bonus Easter egg.

This is a gallery every nook and cranny contained secret delights, well worth exploring and will take approx 2hrs for a full visit

Spread over three floors, the Fine Art Museum offers just that....fine art. It's easy to get around and not too crowded. If you have a large bag, you may be asked to put it in a locker. No problem. Great place!

Obviously not the same scale as the Louvre/Getty/Ufficia...nonetheless an excellent collection with, as one would expect, an emphasis on Nordic art, which provides an important window into their past and culture. Highly recommended. Go early on a weekday for social distancing.
