About
Bohus fortress is an unprecedented Nordic heritage. Forces from Sweden, Denmark and Norway has unsuccessfully besieged the site 14 times and during more than 700 years Kings, Queens, witches and saints have put their mark on the history of the site. Prisoners have suffered hellish torment in its dark dungeons and in the courtyard there is still a well, built by the toil of condemned prisoners. The fortress has been a ruin for the past two centuries, ensuring that its violent past is but a memory, today the site is a popular destination for excursions, far from gun smoke, witchcraft commissions and corporal punishment. Nowadays, foreign visitors are more than welcome inside its walls, where peace now reigns most of the time. Make a visit to the Bohus fortress, and be a part of the Nordic history.

This is a really lovely little castle that is certainly worth seeing if you're interested in history but also just to look at and maybe enjoy a picnic if the weather permits.
It was especially scenic in the mists of the recent rain.
There is a audio guide available but you can follow along with the signs if you don't care to use it though they are not as in depth.
It was busy though not overly so as to ruin the experience and if you have small children there is a section set up with a few games for them.

I didn't expect it to be so good. There is a lot of history around this place, and the presentation of it is very good.
There are also a lot of activities inside which is great for kids - so it's definitly for all the family.
We thougth the place opened at 10, but when we arrived it turned out that the opening was at 11. But when quite a few people showed up, they opened well ahead of time. Really good service!

Great place for a trip with the kids. The fortress is beautiful. Various activities / games for children are offered inside the fortress. It also has something to eat. The castle is a 20-minute bus ride from central Gothenburg. We had a chance to watch a battle simulation.

I visited the Bohus fortress during my recent stay in Gothenburg. And I liked it very much.
The place can be easily reached by public transport (Green Express Bus, which goes every 10-15 minutes, stops across the bridge from the fortress, for the Gothenburg city tariff).
The fortress does not look so big from outside but you can easily spend there 2-3 hours, if you want to visit all the parts, read all the panels (there could be more of them) or just take a rest while looking over the countryside (there is a marvelous view from the fortress).
The fortress has an interesting history that is closely linked to the history of the whole country.
In the main courtyard, there were some events organized primarily for children but the number of those attending these events was reasonable and the activities did not interfere with the other of us visiting the place.
All in all, I enjoyed my afternoon in Bohus and would recommend the fortress to all those who are interested in history and nature and like to discover places on their own.

This is an amazing stop for children and grown ups alike. A beautiful fortress with an air of adventure, There are a lot of simple but entertaining activities to try out- archery, horse shoe throwing, riding a tournament wood horse on rails, pulling a raft across a pond etc etc. And add to that prison holes, pillory, an executioner and you have enough to keep the kids busy for 2 or 3 hours. But there are also å lot of informative Signs to explain the history og the place and the buildings.

I have been there a couple of times as I live nearby. The fortress has been partly rebuilt and with some imagination one gets a feeling of how it might have been. There is some information about the history provided and one of the towers, fars hat, is fully accessible, you can go in and up and enjoy the view. A couple of times each year there are theater, dog shows and other cultural stuff happening, more information to that is usually found on the homepage.
I would say that it is a nice place for a cultural visit with children as it doesn't take too long to see and for those who are interested in the history of not only Sweden but also Norway and Denmark.
Outside is a small shop with Souvenirs and the ticket sales for the Fortress and a kiosk with food and drink and bathroom facilities.

if you can choose, visit Carlstens fästning (fort) on the Island of Marstrand, Bohus fästning does not have much to offer except views towards the inland. You can see the river of Göta älv, but you must be lucky to spot a ship. the castle grounds are not much to have either, but there are small kiosks and cafés, so do stop on the way. Best café is "Mors Mössa" by the big parking lot and by the river. Youth hostel is opposite the castle. But if you want to see the real thing - travel on Another 30 mins towards Marstrand and Carlstens Castle.

Secret tunnels, dungeons, Hugh Banquet Halls, and Grand Residential quarters of Royalty, the likes of Queen Blanka and Queen Margareta. The Fortress was home to hundreds of soldiers, common people and prisoners.
An exciting Historical site for children and adults.
The better part of a morning is given to games of 'hide - and-seek' in secret tunnels, old kitchens and scary dungeons; alongside an education in great History and nature that abounds on this beautiful Site.
The lovely scenic view captured on camera and a wholesome meal from the 'eateries' outside the "Bohus Fortress" boundaries, leave an indelible imprint on the body, mind, and soul, of the entire family, young and old.
History in its element, never to be missed!

I absolutely loved my visit to the castle yesterday. But it was totally ruined by having 2000 (TWO THOUSAND) KRONA IN PARKING TICKETS on our two cars in the parking lot. That is seems like an unreasonably, excessively high amount for tickets. We paid via the mobile parking app when we parked but the specific spots we were parked in that lot were not covered by that app. It was a very crowded day so maybe we missed a sign. We were not alone, as several cars (at least 10 I would guess) also had the tickets on them. Perhaps Bohus doesn’t manage that parking lot that is clearly the one that is right next to their entrance. But at a minimum they should warn their patrons about the excessively costly (TWO THOUSAND KRONA) parking tickets they might find for them waiting upon their return to their cars. I hope Bohus could help other visitors avoid the terrible TWO THOUSAND KRONA end of a visit experience we unfortunately had with the parking lot.

Saw the place as we drove by. Curiosity won out, and we stopped. So thankful we did. While much has been destroyed, there was a ton of things to see and experience, with plenty of activities for children to do along the way. Wonderful opportunity to see a well built fortress, in a wonderful location! This is one of a few places where you can spend an hour, or an entire day.
