Definitely a place you should check if you are visiting Uppsala. I can't make a review about the castle inside, since I didn't enter, but only the view is worth taking a few extra minutes to go there. It is located not that far from the station, and most likely you will walk pass it on your way to the Cathedral (another must-see location)

From almost everywhere in Uppsala and the Uppsala plains you see the castle towering on its hill. And of course vice versa you have excellent views from the castle, so it is worth climbing the hill, even with your heavy SLR camera.

Like everybody else here I need to mention that there is actually not to much else to see, other than the impressive large inner court and locked-up buildings which well hide the fact that construction started already in 1549 and that Uppsala Slott played a major role in the history of Sweden throughout much of its early history. Uppsala Castle was the the site of Rikssalen (Swedish for: the Hall of State) for many years. It was ruined by a fire in 1702 and later even used as a quarry for the royal palace in Stockholm! Eventually rebuilt in classic style it serves as the residence of the governour of the Uppland region.

I would like to point your attention to a small museum in the basement of the castle, called Fredens Hus (The House of Peace) with changing, always interesting exhibitions. Free entrance. It has limited opening hours (Wed to Fri 15-18, Sat and Sunday 12-16) and a website so far in Swedish only (www.fredenshus.se/). It is dedicated to Dag Hammarskjöld, the former UN Secretary General who was born in Uppsala and killed during a peace mission in Congo in 1961. "Only he deserves power who every day justifies it."
From a strong medieval fortification to the House of Peace! I like that.

The absolute site to have a nice view of the city, though the castle itself is not something spectacular to see.

This surprising castle qua archtecture lies on a hill in the center of Uppsala, Sweden. The view over the city is fantastic. In the right wing you find a museum for modern arts. Very nice old building. There is a lift in the museum. Entrance is free!

I'm not one to give bad reviews but this visit was for me extremely disappointing. It's an interesting part of Swedish history as the sture murders took place there but there's barely any information on it or any kind of exhibition (the museum of the cathedral houses the clothes they wore but little else) You couldn't tour the castle either. Basically not much to offer about the actual castle and its history. The placement is nice enough with beautiful views of the city. The art museum is free entry and has the works of notable swedes but everything is in Swedish with no English translation which is unusual in Sweden. In all a very disappointing visit

The castle, which doesn't even look like a castle is big and red, that's all that will strike you but it has no other value or attributes. It is a long building with no character . It stands tall on the hill, you can see it from everywhere but i guess only curiosity brings you closer. Nothing spectacular.

The place was closed, that's what I thought, then a large group of people got in, the guide was talking Russian. I tried to get in too but I was pushed away, "booked tours only" and they slammed the door in my nose.
Oh well...the best you get out off this castle is the view of the city and the garden behind the castle...other than that...you can skip it. There are better "castles" out there. The city is nice, see some pictures attached, but not this "castle".

The castle has a nice view of the city and the botanical garden, but the castle itself is not a big deal. You can't go inside, since they are still using the building and it's not worth paying to enter in the old part of the castle because there isn't much to see.

With the way the garden is designed up here you get a great view of its geometric formation. There are also some informative info boards and the Castle itself is much more interesting up close than from afar. There is parking at the castle entrance.
