Prefect visit if your going to Zemun. It is located right across the street from Gordos tower so you can't miss it. It is also one of the churches to visit if your already going to Gordos tower and Zemun. Free entrance.

The Jewish cemetary in Zemun is what remains of a once thriving Jewish community that was wiped out by the Nazis.. After the 2nd World War very few Jews remained in Serbia although some did return there later to rebuild the community, and today there are somewhere between 1,000-2,000 Jews in the whole of the country.
Zemun is now a part of Belgrade but was once a separate town with its' own Jewish institutions. A walk through the cemetary will take you back to the end of the 19th century, and you will even find the grave of Theodor Herzel's grandfather.
There is also a monument in memory of the Jews who perished in the 2nd World War..
Finding the cemetary is not so easy.
When visiting the Gardos (or Millenium) Tower, which is a must in Zemun, you will see the entrance to the Christian cemetary opposite the entrance to the tower. You have to go into this cemetary and walk all the way through it (about a 5 minute walk) and you will find yourself exiting to a small road on the other side. The cemetary then continues on the other side of the road. However, after crossing the road, head into the cemetary at a 45 degree angle to the left and after a short walk you will see the sign at the entrance to the Jewish cemetary. The memorial monument is close to the entrance. Herzel's grandfathers grave is at the far end of the cemetary to the left..
This is not a well know place and even some of the local guides we asked didn't know it was there.
It is well worth a visit, especially for Jews who are interested in their history.
As a matter of interest, Yair Lapid, the head of the Yesh Atid political party in Israel, comes from a family that originated in Zemun.

The cemetery has graves of different religions . Hebrew letters next to Cyrillic and Latin writings.
The grandparents' graves of Theodor Hertzl - One of the greatest Jewish leaders are to be seen in this cemetery.
Very moving

It was opened in mid XVIII century. Today it is devided on three parts: catholic and Orthodox cemetery. Catholic cemetery includes Muslim and Jewish cemetery too. If you search around you can see remains of neolitic settlement which was destroyed in fire, old Medevial fortress walls, bastion from 1841... Choose one of the gates and start your own reserach.

This cemetery was opened in XVIII century but there are some records that it is even older. Under the cemetery are underground passages which connect whole city.
Cemetery is divided globally on Catholic and Orthodox area. Catholic area is divided in three areas: Catholic, Muslim and Jewish. Some tombs are very old, some can fall, so be careful. If you have some time, go around, see tombstones which are very interesting. On some you can find Mason symbols. Mane gates are locked at 20h, but there are small gates where you can enter the cemetery whole day or night.

We always make a point of visiting cemeteries as they are such an important part of history. This cemetery is on the highest part of Zemun at Gardos and is still in use. However, unless yuu can read Serbian what you will get from the visit is limited. The cemetery is within 100m of the tower on Gardos.

Right next to the Gardos tower is the Zemun cemetery and its worth a quiet and reflective walk amongst tombstones that are in some cases 200 years old.

The Cemetery is old and neat, doesnt look scary at all or something. It is located on the top of a not high hill, so the idea was nice to bu buried with a picturesque view around. Roses, old church, neat monuments, quiet and peaceful. come on a sunny day. (That was a part of my Zemun date-day program, lol)

I took a visit inside the cemetery after visiting the Gardo's Millennium Tower. It's just a cemetery like other cemeteries. Nothing special about it.

Does anyone know how to reach from the entrance of the cemetery to the grave of Herzl's grandfather?
