Neighborhood: Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.

Free Entry
Aug 2019
We were here for only a short time (5-hour stopover on a cruise in August 2019) so didn't have time to tour the Royal Palace, but we did go up the stairs just inside the entrance (right side), and into the Royal Chapel, which is free entry. Beautiful lavish decorations with ceiling paintings too! We also wandered around the courtyards beyond, which had bathrooms. We stepped in as part of Rick Steves "Gamla Stan (Old Town) Walking tour" which is in his invaluable guidebook, "Scandinavian & Northern European Cruise Ports Guidebook" - highly recommended!

The “Stockholm Cathedral”
Sep 2019
A Lutheran cathedral since the early 1500’s, this church built in the 1200s. It is unlike most European churches of its time as its interior is of small red bricks. The general style now is Baroque throughout much of the interior. A lovely church next to the palace that is an essential part of the old town. Look around all the areas or you will miss something important.

Gorgeous interior
Sep 2019
Adjacent to the Royal Palace is the Cathedral also called Storkyrkan. Due to the crowded area around the Palace, the outside is not all that attractive, but once inside you will be rewarded with gorgeous architecture, statutes stained glass and a magnificient alter. See review for Storkyrkan for more information and details.

Because Svenska kyrkan, the National Cathedral, is not a huge European type cathedral, it would be easy to overlook. But it’s well worth a visit when in the Old Town-Royal Palace area. The present building dates to 1480. For its first 200 years this Gothic Cathedral was Catholic, and thereafter Lutheran. It has two unusual archictural features, red brick columns, and a silver—rather than gold—alter. Both are very impressive. Also two works of art which are quite arresting. The first is a massive wood sculpture of a horse-mounted St. George slaying the dragon, which has an interesting story associated with it. The second is a floor-to-ceiling painting, The Last Judgment, amazing both in size and detail. The Cathedral can be seen in a brief visit. There is a small admission fee, easily worth it.

Magnificent Swedish-gothic brickwork
Sep 2018 • Friends
The photos on TripAdvisor for this cathedral appear under the name Slottskyrkan. However, some others call it Storkyrkan and Sankt Nikolai kyrka. The Swedish word “Slottskyrkan” translates to Royal Chapel, which is within the Stockholm Palace. The interior church photos posted to TripAdvisor are a mix of those taken of Storkyrkan and the Royal Chapel.

The interior of Storkyrkan, a Lutheran church, is very beautiful and unique. Starting from the outside, to me, it looks very nice, and without knowing Swedish architecture, it looks somewhat Spanish, but I understand that it is Swedish brick-gothic. On the inside, the first thing that strikes me is the unique columns and the arches .between them. There is a very nice statue of a king or knight mounted on a horse, with sword raised, and about to strike a dragon. The statue set also includes a statue of a queen and a lamb. The organ at the back of the church is very magnificent. Other than a few basic things such as somewhat standard doors and pews, most features of the church are impressive. Storkyrkan is located beside the Royal Palace.

One easy way to tell Slottskyrkan from Storkyrkan is to look at the interior. Inside Slottskyrkan, I see no brickwork associated with the columns and walls. The interior of Storkyrkan is loaded with beautiful brickwork; even its columns are made almost entirely of fancy brick brickwork.

Beautiful cathedral
Sep 2018
Cathedral is located a few steps from Royal Palace. There is an admission charge but it is worth the price. Very ornate interior with beautiful statues and paintings - don’t miss the St George statue ( it’s huge so difficult not to see it ). Altar is beautiful and very ornate.

Royal Chapel
Aug 2018 • Couples
It's easy to visit the chapel while visiting the Royal Palace, and definitely worth a peek inside. Note that this is not the same as the "Stockholm Cathedral", or Storkyrkan, just outside the Royal Palace area (Royal Chapel is inside, right across from the entrance to the Royal Apartments). It seems like there is considerable confusion about this in many of the TA reviews. As churches go, this seemed nice, but about average, not super-extravagant like you might expect from being inside the Royal Palace.

A little misleading with photos of Storkyrkan
Aug 2017 • Solo
Since the 17th century there is a separate assembly - Kungl. Court Parish. The members of the assembly consist of employees at Kungl. Homesteads with families. Every Sunday, worship is held. During the summer season, the church is open for own walking, gives you the opportunity to see the church's interior design, architecture and artwork. Not to be confused with pictures under this heading belonging to the church outside the castle, Storkyrkan

The Royal Chapel
Jun 2017 • Couples
This is the Royal Chapel, located inside the Royal Palace, therefore it is sometimes used by the royal family at certain church ceremonies.
Once inside in one of Sweden's most ornate churches (how The Royal Chapel is considered), take some time to admire some of its unique sights such as the 6 Apostle statues, the beautiful altar and the ceiling paintings.

In this Church Crownprincess Victoria of Sweden married her husband Prince Daniel. Even King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden married Queen Silvia in this Church the same day but many years earlier.
