Neighborhood: Östermalm
With its high-end shopping facilities and Michelin-starred restaurants, Östermalm is definitely the poshest part of central Stockholm. Here you will find Stockholm’s most majestic residential buildings, a beautiful market hall from 1888 displaying gourmet foods from around the world and the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre with its awe-inspiring architecture. At night, legendary nightclubs make the perfect location to observe the natives (and those aspiring to become natives of this exclusive neighborhood) in their natural habitat and to enjoy the latest produce of the Swedish house music scene.

- Howard SAlbany, New York804 contributionsStroll and NoshIf there's a food hall in a place I am visiting, I go to it as I like to walk around the stalls and eat a variety of foods. The market has vendors that sell fresh fish, meat, sweets, and traditional delicacies. I had Falafel for dinner here at Beirut Cafe. It is housed in a large brick building.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 30, 2023
- DincyBrighton, Colorado354 contributionsLovely food hall in historic building.Very interesting, upscale marketplace. More small restaurants than food stalls, but it was a great place to stroll and look at local foodstuffs and to have lunch. We had a nice little seafood lunch at Lisa Elmqvist. Service was very good and food delicious.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 12, 2023
- NICHOLAS TDubai, United Arab Emirates10,326 contributionsGreat atmosphere and food optionsThis is a lively and lovely food hall with lots of great options. We went on New Year’s Eve and it was extremely busy but worth the wait for a delicious seafood meal at Lisa Elmqvist. Well worth a visit if you gave a few days in Stockholm.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 1, 2024
- Peter A. KnippSingapore, Singapore1,958 contributionsHeaven on earth, amazing selection of Swedish & some international specialtiesÖstermalms Saluhall / Marketplace Every city we always make the market/food hall one of our very first stops to visit! Today after the cultural exposure at the Vasa museum, it was the Östermalm’s Saluhall! Lauded as one of the top 10 destinations when in Stockholm, it did not disappoint! From the variety of fresh produce, to the ever present selection of the freshest Seafood, amazing meat cuts and especially interesting the take away ready meals, the variety was just simply outstanding! Obviously since we choose to stay in Apartments rather the hotels, (after 50 years associated with hotels, enough) we enjoyed the shopping experience from various stalls/sellers who all spoke excellent English, were very professional and knowledgeable, something we often miss even back home! And the products we took home were of superb quality! It was a day we’ll spend and we can’t wait for the next day’s experience! We simply love Stockholm, driving through this city gave us an excellent first day overview! #singapore #foodsg #sgfoodie #sgfoodporn #gourmet #cuisine #foodagram #foodaddict #SGfood #sgfoodstagram #sglifestylesingapore #stockholm #sweden #thetourist #alifetimetrip #östermalmssaluhall #FoodforlifeVisited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2024
- Uncle BadgerThe Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, United Kingdom653 contributionsTranquilThere weren’t many people around when we went (about mid morning on a Thursday). No idea if that is typical but it gave it a wonderfully serene charm. Great looking produce in a fantastic building, this really is a must do activity. It provides a welcome break from the sun outside.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 28, 2024
- TrainbleuBrussels, Belgium38,093 contributionsMajestic covered food marketEven if you don’t intend to shop for food or have a meal at one of the restaurants, the 1888 covered food market on Östermalmstorg is well worth a visit. Its architects, Isak Gustaf Clason and Kasper Salin, have clearly been inspired by the red brick architecture of Northern Germany and French cast-iron constructions. The market has been extensively renovated between 2016 and 2020. The original features have been lovingly restored, and two balconies have been added to accommodate more people. Add to this the yummy (but rather pricey) food on display, and it is obvious Östermalms Saluhall is a feast for the eye and the palate.Visited May 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 4, 2024

We saw the summer produce on display and some very interesting products. Fun to explore and shop.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 11, 2024
- Sadie B39 contributionsCool to check out - you don't have to eat hereI went here three times, solo for dinner, with my mom for lunch and with a friend for a snack. It is pricey, though I still recommend checking it out, even if you just walk through. The food is good at several different restaurants. Is it worth the price? Maybe, I am not convinced.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 9, 2024
- MichaelBanksCanton, Texas971 contributionsNice but crowdedNice large building with many different stalls with various choices of food to take away or eat there. The places to sit down and eat were really crowded and the original place I stopped for a moose burger was so busy and couldn’t ever get service left and went somewhere else. Good place to visit to get out of the ran or weather. Depending on when you go it may be crowded. I went around 10am and was full.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten September 2, 2024
- Katie HJersey, United Kingdom375 contributionsExcellent Food MarketI stopped here for lunch with my husband and parents while visiting Stockholm. What a delightful market! We had lunch in a restaurant, local dishes which were delicious. We then strolled around the stalls and bought some cheese to go! Definitely recommended for any foodies.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024

Loved this place (!), but being in a hotel, there was nothing we could do with all of the amazing food being sold there. So we ate at Lisa Elmqvist (which was really good, but you may have a hard time getting a table) - and filled our bags with some of the best cardamom loaded pastries in the city at the coffee place (opposite end of the hall).
Try Eataly too if you love gourmet food.

This market hall is located in the heart of Stockholm. It was built in 1888.
The last time we visited in 2019, the place was in a complete renovation and there was a temporary hall on the square next to it.
Now we could see the results and they were absolutely stunning. The original star-shaped floor plan and all beautiful details have been kept. You could still feel the old atmosphere.
It is perfectly justified that Östermalm's Market Hall has been named the world's 7th best market hall.

Granted this is perhaps a better place to go to buy food than it is to go for a meal as there are only a few options for dining and they are pricey and more like restaurants than the cafe style or street food operation you might normally expect in a market. But then this is Stockholm, and this is a very upmarket and smart market hall. A lot of the produce, fresh fish, fresh meat looked incredible and wouldn’t be out of place in somewhere like Harrods or Selfridges. If nothing else, as it was only a short stroll from our hotel, this was a lovely place to walk around to look at the amazing food & savour the smells. Impressive.

This was recommended as a place to eat and where to sample some local foods on our Free Walking Tour of Gamla Stan by guide Ebba, so we tracked it down.
It's an up-market undercover market, selling quality fresh produce, but there are a variety of restaurants and bars where you order your food and drink (most seemed licensed, but also had free water) and take it to tables in that restaurant's designated eating area.
It worked well for us and the shrimp (prawn) and gravlax (salmon) smörgåstårta we had were excellent.
Check it out for yourselves.

Like all food halls it can be a little overwhelming when you first arrive. We were on a “Nordic food walking tour” and ended up trying food at 3 or4 locations. The fresh fruit stand was also really good but think there was a fruit stand with cheaper prices in the square right outside the building.

These halls are the best halls I have ever seen in my life. The place is like several 5 stars restaurants places all under the same roof seperated by stands selling fish, cheese, sweets, bakeries.
We didn't try the products since the prices seemed expensive but we may come back for a treat in the coming days.

Nice food hall with a lot of delecacies.
A bit high priced if not overpriced compared to e.g. other good alternatives in Stockholm.
The entrance doors shows clearly that dogs are not allowed. However today at least 4 dogs were in side the hall and they were not service dogs.
Why?
Swedes seems not to understand rules and/or do not respect the rules.
No one dares to tell the dog owners that they should leave the food hall. No one follows up anything, sorry to say. Why ?

Hola.
Buen viaje!
