The area

Neighborhood: Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.

It was such a delight to stumble upon this gem of an island a few steps away from the crowds of Gamla Stan. Its history is fascinating, and the views superb. I loved that there were no cafes or retail outlets; the main crowd I saw was a group of locals having sandwiches together after a lunchtime swim.

This isn’t a must see in Stockholm, but if you’re visiting Gamla Stan and the government buildings etc. you may as well take a short detour over a canal and major through route to this small island which is basically summed up as elegant houses, a pretty church and some great views, not least of the Stadshuis/Town Hall across the water.

You can enjoy this small island close to to the old city (Gamla Stan) in all seasons.
The amazing view of the frozen sea is at the same level as the glittering and warm view you can enjoy in June/July.
I definitively recommend the short walk to go to Riddarholmen in all season.
Little hints walk down (or up) the Birger Jarls Torg stairs to discover the Normalhöjdpunkten, is just a commemorative plaque on the wall but was the Swedish reference point for "sea level" .

Riddarholmen is a small island in central Stockholm. It is part of Gamla Stan, the Old Town. However many tourists don't find here and so it is much quieter.

There are a number of private palaces dating back to the 17th century. The main landmark is the church Riddarholmskyrkan, used as Sweden's royal burial church from the 17th century to 1950. Many earlier Swedish monarchs lie buried there. A statue of Birger Jarl stands next to the church.

From the western shore is a panoramic view of the Riddarfjärden Bay with Stockholm City Hall in the background.

If you want to stay here overnight, it is possible in the Mälardrottningen Yacht Hotel. It is permanently docked here.

Riddarholmen forms one of the more attractive views of Stockholm’s old town when looked upon from Sodermalm, with the gorgeous Riddarholmskyrkan rising impressively to dominate the skyline.

In truth, it’s main attraction is itself – there are no cafés or restaurants to draw the visitor – just a series of amazing views across the bay towards the City Hall, where two attractive statues can also be found to frame your pictures, one of which is Birger Jal, the apparent founder of the city.

It’s a peaceful spot, once the busy arterial road from Gamla Stan is crossed - probably the quietest part of the city, apart from Djurgarden of course.

There are also a number of impressive old buildings and former palaces to take a look at. But the main appeal of Riddarholmen is to be looked upon from afar, or to look afar from.

Definitely worthy of an hour’s diversion from Gamla Stan itself. But make sure that you’re not looking for somewhere to eat or to drink!

A tonne of charm, age, interest, history and fantastic views can be found here.

Photographic opportunities abound as the views are stunning in almost every direction.

Walk there over the bridge from downtown - hint - the first train that flashes past on the bridge will frighten you as they are close, quite fast, silent and creep up on you -

ALL GOOD FUN though!

I spent a good 60 minutes + exploring AND the Mobile vendor food vans at the top of the area are great. I recommend the Ethiopian 'roasted on the spot' Coffee and the meat dumplings van - YUMM

If you want a nice photo of Stadshuset or just to relax in the evening sun you need to come here. This is a place to calm down. Can be windy so be prepared.

If you get tired of the crowds in Gamla Stan just take a short walk across the bridge to the small island if Riddarholmen and head towards the water straight ahead. It's a world away. Some interesting buildings and great views of the city hall and Sodermalm. Just sit on a bench and enjoy the view or go the cafe. Once you are refreshed you can head back to Gamla Stan.

The spire of the former Riddarholmen Church led me to head over from the Klara Malarstrand to check things out. It was a worthwhile trip. The area is associated with the very founding of Stockholm c 1250 AD. The church used to be the burial site for Swedish royalty from 1634 to 1950. Many appeal courts are located here as well as some colourful palaces. Other parts of town get most of the tourists so it is an off the beaten path gem.
