Top ways to experience Kungsträdgården

The area

Address
Neighborhood: Norrmalm
Norrmalm is Stockholm’s most central and busiest neighborhood. It’s home to the main shopping street, Drottninggatan, and to Stockholm icons like the Sergels Torg glass obelisk, the famous Hay Market with its Carl Milles sculptures, and the Hötorget Skyscrapers, a sight on every other Stockholm postcard. Norrmalm is also home to Sweden’s most traditional department stores Nordiska Kompaniet and Åhléns City juxtaposed with Stockholm’s most modern shopping mall, Mood Stockholm. Visitors to this area get to experience the unique Swedish philosophy of protecting cultural heritage while also staying on top of fashion innovation and modern architecture.

I walked from end to end, and even in Winter, I really enjoyed the space, that there were lots of places to sit and rest my painful knees. I stopped for a hot tea, and chokolad ball in one of the cafes, and it was nice to get out of the wind. All surrounded by beautiful buildings. I walked from the city end, down to the waterfront, with lovely views across to the Parliament buildings, and the Old Town.
It must be a beautiful place to sit during Spring and Summer.

This is a beautiful park filled with flowers, trees & people - with the equally beautiful St. Jakob's Church looming over it. Every day I was in Stockholm, I always would find myself here, walking around. It was almost like the streets were funneling me to it.

We went here quite often to watch the skaters. Family feel and and fun. Several restaurants a long one side and the food was great. It is also a great cut through from Kungtradgarden shopping area to the marina and ferries or tour boats.

This beautiful garden is right in the middle of a very busy city. There are few water bodies which add to its beauty, beside some statues. There are a lot of restaurants and beer bars nearby where one can spend hours while watching this nice oasis. Hats off to Sweedish goverment for keeping alive history and nature in a modern city.
Don't miss it...

A nice and small park with a statue, fountains, neat grass to sit on and some activities going on. Great place to come and relax. Very near to the Grand Palace and Swedish Parliament.

Peaceful walk on its own island. Take a break without a cinnamon bun and literally stop and smell the flowers.

We just found this park by accident and there was a huge area with street food and a music show. It was great. When in Stockholm (in Summer) - go there!

Now if I was a striking blonde Swede in a white turtleneck, I'm sure I'd want to be seen here. It definitely felt like a congregation point for locals and tourists in the middle of the city. The NYC park that it reminds me the most of is neither Central Park nor Washington Square but Bryant Park because it felt very much like an urban space where you could have a meal at a higher-end eatery inside the park. In fact, it's so urban they decided to use artificial grass, something akin to Astroturf on a lot of the grounds to minimize maintenance. Those darn efficient Swedes, you betcha.

As you head east of Sergels torg where the big, elliptical plaza leads to a series of underground shopping centers, you come up and see (at least in spring), the arresting sight of cherry blossom trees surrounding a large rectangular pond that apparently doubles as a concert stage when it's emptied out. It was plenty crowded around the pool, so Jamie W. and I walked a bit further south near the statue of King Charles XIII where the Astroturf was wide open for any ignorant American tourist to sit a spell as they plot their next photo stop in Stockholm.

Staring at the soft serve cones passing by us as they were being licked to oblivion, we couldn't help ourselves and got a couple of the cones with chopped walnuts at a portable kiosk on the side of the park. The cones are called mjukglass in Swedish, and they were a treat despite the rare encounter with a homeless woman resulting in the only harassment we experienced on our trip. I have to admit the lack of racial diversity in Stockholm was glaringly evident to the point where the lone black man in the park was conspicuous by his presence. People watching was clearly the spectator sport of choice here.
