Södermalm Island is linked to Gamla Stan (Old Town) by a walkable isthmus ("Slussen", the lock separating Lake Malären from the Baltic Sea). Södermalm, once working class, has gentrified but still retains its edgy elements. Södermalm is home to numerous bars (I liked Akkurat and Mösebacke which has an outdoor beer garden with gorgeous panoramic views), cafes (Wayne's, Espressino, Espresso... More

A wonder around Sodermalm involves buildings and streets as old as Gamla Stan, without the crowds and the trinket tat shops. There's also a wonderful viewpoint across the water to Gamla Stan and the city.

Continuing gentrification of the whole area has made it very popular, with plenty of bars and restaurants.

Great part of Stockholm with good bars and places to eat - fantastic access via the underground to everywhere in the city. Cool place to hang out.

We were lucky to stay in an apartment in this area of Stockholm. It felt "normal." We enjoyed walking around, learning the history, eating at the great restaurants in the area and visiting the shops. Home of Stieg Larson. Many areas feature in his books.

It is a very nice area to walk. The shops in the main street are different from the old town and quite nice and there are many parts which are different one from the other.

An convenient morning or afternoon stroll before or after the Royal Palace, also can include the Nobel Museum. Many options available here for cafes too.

Södermalm is my favourite part of Stockholm. Here you can find everything! At Katarinavägen you have the best views Stockholm can offer, over old town, skeppsholmen and parts of Djurgården. In the area around Sågargstan you will find really beautiful old wooden houses. Around Nytorget there are lots and lots of restaurants and small interesting shops! Hornstull has been renovated... We spent a good deal of time on this island. One trip we took was the metro from Stadion to the end of the line in Fruangen, traversing the northern portion of Sodermalm. On the return we alighted at Mariatorget and walked along Swedenborgsgatan to the Sodra Station area, where there is interesting residential architecture comprising an impressive tower and... More

Staying in Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen

Neighborhood Profile
Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.
