Neighborhood: Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.

History, Religion, & Art Packaged In Nordic Gothic-style Brickwork
Storkyrkan offers visitors an interesting history and some beautiful artwork. Everybody is pretty enamored by the statue of St. George slaying the dragon, but I was personally quite intrigued by the Parhelion Painting. The story behind the tomb of Lasse Skytte was also captivating. Be sure to stop in here for an hour or so if you're in Gamla Stan.

    Must see historic cathedral
This church we happened upon while waiting to get into the Royal Palace nearby. So glad we went in. It is the oldest church in the city and gorgeous. It was originally French Gothic and changed to Baroque. Lots of original furnishings. Much nicer than the other church nearby.

    Awesome Organ concert
I went with a friend after having dinner in Old Town. Totally were not planning on going in but saw they had organ concerts and we were there at just the right time. It was only $8 USD for students to go see the concert. The church was otherwise closed so we would have had no opportunity to visit unless it was for this concert we accidentally ran across. The inside is beautiful, grab the guide sheet to read more about each major work of art.

    A great visit
Loved it! I'm from the UK, and it is very different from our cathedrals. Loved the brickwork. Loved the modern stainglassed windows. Very florid decoration in places, interesting statues. Felt everything was rather large and over the top! Maybe needs to make more of a focus on "spiritual" opportunities, with area for prayer, or some sort of chaplaincy service. But well worth a visit, and well worth the entry price.

I went because i had a gocity pass, it was nice, im glad i went but its not really worth the 85SEK fee. a third of the church was sectioned off because parishoners were practing, i dont know if it was just the time i went or a daily occurance, still not being able to see all that you paid for is annoying.
it wasnt without a highlight on the wall on the left side a huge painting on purgatory that was AWESOME i spent 5 mins trying to get every angle on my phone.

as a side note i took a boat tour and learned that pre-pandemic the building was yellow

This gorgeous cathedral was very reminiscent of Roman Catholic churches that we have seen in Italy, France and Spain, and was a fascinating contrast to the more simple and basic churches that we have seen elsewhere in Scandinavia. We particularly were impressed by the 500 year old statue of St. George versus the Dragon. Please note that the outside of the cathedral is under construction as of September 2022, but you can visit the interior thereof without any obstructions.

So as others have said, the exterior is currently under major renovation which is a shame, and makes it a bit harder to find the entrance! However, once inside, you will not be disappointed as this is an impressive find on any scale.

There are major artworks inside, as well as an incredible George & the Dragon statue, pretty brickwork and pews and the most wonderful ebony & silver altar which is very unusual. As a side point it’s a great place to come and rest your feet from sightseeing and away from the crowds of tourists and there are free toilets too.

Worth every penny of the entrance fee, and leaflets available too in multiple languages. Also a lovely globe shaped candle holder near the back of the church.

Highly recommended as a must-see in Gamla Stan.

Besides having a beautiful interior, the Stockholm Cathedral has a really nice collection of religious art. The highlight is the spectacular statue depicting the myth of Saint George slaying the dragon. The Swedish Royal Family attends services at this church and has its own seating place, which makes the visit even more interesting. Since it is in Stockholm Old Town, its visit can be combined with other nearby attractions, like the Royal Palace or Nobel Museum.

We stumbled on this Cathedral as we were walking from the Royal Palace to Gamle Stan.
We are not religious but this is an absolutely beautiful medieval Cathedral built 1279. St George and the dragon sculpture is amazing. Enters fee is included in the Stockholm pass. Lots to see in this church or just enjoy a quiet moment.

Not grand on the cathedrals of Europe scale but so worth a (free) visit. Wonderful Swedish architectural pragmatism has seen the original (1300 AD) incorporated into the newer parts of the cathedral. Even the flooring tombstones have been repurposed. Staff very helpful and friendly. A quiet refuge (and a public toilet hidden away on the Right side of the church) amidst the tourist bustle of Gamla Stan
