Some have argued that this is a small, barely visible plaque that is easily missable (correct on both counts) and nothing special at all. They miss the point. The simplicity is exactly what the man it commemorates--Former Prime Minister Olof Palme would probably have wanted. If you are looking for a Taj Mahal, move along.

On the night of February 28, 1986, Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was fatally shot while walking home from a movie theater with his wife. His murder has remained unsolved to this day.

The location of the prime minister’s death is memorialized on Sveavägen with a golden plaque embedded in the sidewalk. The prime minister was buried in the nearby cemetery gardens of Adolf Fredrik church.

It had been an event that not only shook Sweden, but a great part of the world: the murder of the prime minister in peace loving Sweden. How many Olof Palme streets, Olof Palme squares, Olof Palme memorials are there all over the world till today? Alone in Greece, which I know best, exist three Olof Palme streets (Athens, Thessaloniki, Iraklion).

While standing by the bronze memorial plaque on Sveavagen, one of the main streets of Central Stockholm, one might suddenly remember reading about it in the newspapers just after the 28th of February 1986. How the then 49 years old Social Democrat walked out of a cinema after 11pm together with his wife, but no bodyguards, and then was shot at the spot, where the memorial plaque has been put.

If one is not specifically looking for it, one might not become aware of this plaque. It is on the sidewalk of the Sveavagen street, in front of an Urban Deli shop and with to the right the small Tunnelgatan street - with a tunnel at the end, through which the single murderer escaped.

Because the brutal murder of Social Democratic Prime Minister Olof Palme (1927–1986) marked the history of Sweden, we wanted to see the Palme memorial. We had some difficulty finding it, though, because we were looking for the wrong thing in the wrong place. We thought the memorial would be a brass plaque on a wall somewhere, but it is a simple plaque in the pavement at the crossing of Sveavägen and Tunnelgatan, marking the spot where Olaf Palme was shot in the back at close range on 28 February 1986. While asking around, we were amazed that even a woman working on Olof Palme Street had no idea who he was. It is said the perpetrator fled up the stairs above the Brunkeberg tunnel. His identity was never established with certainty.

We watched Swedish series The Unlikely Murderer on Netflix and we stopped by to acknowledge the place where the crime happened when we were in the area. Same alley where the murderer escaped in and the plague is on the spot where Olof Palme was attacked and died.

Its just a plate in the ground. A symbol of the worlds largest murder inquiry that will never be solved, but just a plate in the ground. Move on.

I don't understand how people can give a poor review to a memorial to a slain prime minister. This plaque marks the spot where Mr. Olof Palme was killed on February 28, 1986. It is on a busy sidewalk just outside an Urban Deli.

Olof Palme was gunned down by a mystery killer (32 years later the killer has still not been firmly identified or caught) on this exact spot. The murder shocked Sweden then - and to a large extent still does now. The fact the Prime Minister was used to making his way around the city without bodyguards etc is a clear sign of the modest and much more egalitarian way that Scandinavians do politics. It also shows that whoever killed him was either an opportunist or knew his victim's movements very well. This is a simple but moving memorial. He is buried not far away in a local churchyard.

This is the place where the then Prime Minister of Sweden was shot walking home with his wife after watching a movie at the Grand Cinema further north on the same street, Sveavägen. The murderer has not been found until today.

Keep a watch as you are walking along the street of Sveavägen, the spot is marked with the plaque.
From the spot look back towards the Grand Cinema and his walk can be visualised as he crossed the road to the spot where he was shot. Have a local person with you to explain the sequence of events or read up on it and you can also walk up the way to the Tunnelgatan by which the assasin escaped.
This is a busy walkway hence keep looking down on the footpath for the plaque as it is easy to miss. If you are not a person who loves history you may not appreciate it.
