I had always heard Protestants had minimalist and humble churches, so I was somewhat surprised to stumble across this massive, bright yellow, domed structure much like you'd see in a Catholic country. But even with that, you could identify the differences in style between this typical Swedish Lutheran church and one from, for example Rome, that would be Catholic.

Unfortunately I was visiting on a Sunday, and as I was unwilling to disturb a service being offered, I did not get to view much of the inside of the building. But the outside was breathtaking. There is a similarity in style between churches in Sweden, I did notice. They're all quite tall, either bright yellow, or bricked, with towers and clocks on the outside. They are imposing structures, and are generally surrounded by a graveyard.

I truly enjoyed walking Katarina Kyrka's grounds and admiring her beauty. This part of town in particular was my favourite, lined with bright yellow, red, and orange buildings. Sometimes the occasional pink or green building here and there. A photographer's dream, especially one unfamiliar with the style of Swedish architecture and getting to experience it all for the first time.

very nice church. Easy and nice walk from either slussen or medborgarplatsen metro station. Has a cemetery also. I went on a harsh winter evening and everything was snowy and frozen around the church. Found myself almost alone, but the church was open. Check the times before visiting. This is the best church i visited in Stockholm. It is also close to montelieusvagen (10-15 minutes walk, few stairs involved though), which provides the best panaromic view of stockholm

Very beautiful place, peaceful, for a nice walk in a park (but in the city, few minutes from the metro station!). Massive church, the park is a cemetery. Not to miss it if you’re in that part of the city!

The name of this tremendous church honours Princess Catherine. Originally established in the mid 1600s, following conflagrations it has been rebuilt on a number of occasions, most recently in the first half of the 1990s. Aspects of the exterior are currently under renovation, but the facade is still majestic.

The interior is wonderful, bright white and very tranquil. The sheer space is impressive. The high altar assemblage is dramatic, golden columns and vibrant sun rays. Two large windows bordering flood the area with light. A great chandelier extends to just in front of it.

The everyday altar is more simple but appealing. The nave is impressive and mini-doors lead into the pews. A magnificent organ dominates the rear of the church and it must produce lovely music during services.

Church of Catherine is located in the Södermalm district.

The original building was completed in 1695. Construction of the church started during the reign of Charles X of Sweden. The church was named after Princess Catherine, the mother of the king.

The church has been rebuilt twice after being destroyed by fires, in 1723 and in 1990.

Several famous Swedes are buried in the cemetery surrounding the church. For example the assassinated Foreign Minister Anna Lindh and the popular Dutch-Swedish singer Cornelis Vreeswijk.

Katarina Kyrka is a beautiful church in Stockholm, which has a beautiful facade and a park in the surroundings. A place to visit if you are in the zone. In the average.

We strolled through the cemetery at Katarina Kyrka on our way to Urban Deli from Gamla Stan. It is a very picturesque and peaceful setting. We did not go inside the church, but the outside is very impressive.

I have visited this church twice. Unfortunately, neither visit with the sun shining. The church is surrounded by a beautiful cemetery - makes it feel like a park. The church itself is huge. I find the interior rather plain. One thing I do like is how very small you feel when you sit in a pew. You really get a sense of how big the church is. They have
free brief organ concerts at lunch time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Excellent. I enjoyed this immensely. The church is in a very interesting neighborhood. Well worth a visit.
