Along the road from Fort Providence to Yellowknife we saw 2 different groups of bison, each with 8-10 individuals including babies. They are beautiful animals. You can see why they were hunted to near extinction for their beautiful fur coats.

As we travelled toward Yellowknife we saw the bison along the highway. So beautiful and majestic. We saw them coming both ways. Such a privilege.

cafeful of the buffalo on the road to Yellowknife ,they don't move, wait for them to move to safely pass. Also have seen white wolfs/bears/lynx/foxes/martins lots of birds eagles woodpecker

If you want to see bison, the Mackenzie Bison Sanctuary (basically NWT Highway 3 between Behchokǫ̀ and Ft Providence) is one of the best places to see them, any time of year. It only takes abut three hours to drive from Yellowknife to Ft Providence...More

Google Maps said the drive may take as long as 5 hours from Yellowknife, but it turned out to be less than 3.5 hours. Even about 1.5 hours out, you start to see a few of the wanderers of a few bison off the road....More

On any given day you may or may not see bison. Generally they are on the road so drive with care. If you have a partner they can watch the sides of the road and you can focus on the road. Make sure you give yourself time to... More
